“Chen Li, if it weren’t for my father giving you the only worker-peasant-soldier student recommendation spot, you never would’ve had the chance to meet the daughter of that agricultural professor!”
“Xiao Tang, don’t worry. In this life, I will marry no one but you.”
Lin Ting was startled. In her past life, it was for the sake of Chen Li’s official worker status that he married her.
Her brows furrowed. Then she heard Chen Li say,
“You silly girl, when have I ever lied to you?”
“The one I loved in my past life and this life has always been you.”
Li Haitang was a little confused by his words, but Lin Ting instantly understood—Chen Li was reborn too…
It was now 1973. Originally, they had planned to register their marriage today.
The first thing Lin Ting had intended to do after being reborn was break off the engagement with Chen Li, and it seemed now was the perfect time.
Without hesitation, she rushed out, pointed at Chen Li’s nose, and started cursing:
“Chen Li!”
“You betrayed me!”
Before Chen Li could even react, Lin Ting swiftly raised her hand and slapped him hard across the face!
His cheek swelled up almost instantly.
“You’re ungrateful!”
“A backstabber!”
“A bridge-burner!”
“Heartless beast!”
With every insult, she gave him another slap. Very quickly, Chen Li’s face was swollen like a pig’s head.
And because she was yelling so loudly, everyone nearby heard the commotion.
This was the dormitory for unmarried staff at the agricultural machinery institute. Just across from it was the residential compound for their families. In other words, everyone nearby was either a colleague or family member of Chen Li.
Clutching his face, Chen Li growled angrily, “Lin Ting, are you insane?!”
Lin Ting was momentarily dazed. The Chen Li she remembered from her past life was simple, honest, and dependable. He had never once raised his voice at her.
Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been so badly deceived by him back then!
Clearly, the experiences from his previous life had given him new confidence. He couldn’t even be bothered to pretend now.
“If you’re saying the one you loved in both lives is her, then let’s break off the engagement!”
With that, she let everyone present know that she was his fiancée.
A man who already had a fiancée but was now confessing to another woman? That’s scandalous!
If word got back to the institute leadership, Chen Li could face serious consequences, possibly even expulsion—after all, this era took reputation very seriously.
Meanwhile, Li Haitang’s eyes sparkled with hope upon hearing Lin Ting wanted to end the engagement.
Chen Li was enraged and gritted his teeth.
“I never liked you.”
“It was your snobbish father who forced me into marriage by dangling the chance to become official staff!”
“I, Chen Li, will never marry the granddaughter of a capitalist household!”
Lin Ting’s grandparents had become rich through business and had been in hiding for years. The Lin family kept a low profile to avoid being labeled as capitalists.
In her past life, Chen Li had taken advantage of that fact. He reported her father and even found a copy of Das Kapital hidden under a guest pine tree in their yard, using it as proof that her father had capitalist leanings.
Lin Ting couldn’t change her family background—she had been enjoying the wealth her grandparents built since birth. So she didn’t bother refuting that she was a capitalist’s descendant.
What mattered now was not her identity, but the fact that Chen Li was cheating!
“You promised my father you’d treat me well in this life, and now you’re out here sweet-talking another woman?”
“You enjoyed everything our family gave you, only to turn around and look down on us behind our backs!”
“No one bites the hand that feeds them like you!”
Without her father’s recommendation, Chen Li wouldn’t have even gotten the chance to stay in the city!
Originally, after graduating, he was supposed to return to the countryside.
Someone from the crowd muttered,
“I’ve seen shameless people, but never someone this shameless.”
“Right! Cheating on a fiancée this pretty? He must be blind!”
“…”
Faced with everyone pointing fingers, Li Haitang started crying, “I didn’t cheat…”
Chen Li’s eyes were blazing with fury, “Xiao Tang and I are innocent!”
“There’s no cheating!”
Lin Ting sneered coldly.
“You confessed so affectionately just now, and now you say nothing happened?”
“I’m going straight to your supervisor at the institute to ask how they handle cheaters like you!”
She lifted her foot and stormed off. Neither Chen Li nor Li Haitang could stop her!
Lin Ting had grown up helping her father in experimental fields. Combined with her well-off upbringing, good food, and nutrition, she was strong and healthy—stronger than most men. It was no surprise that the physically weak Chen Li and Li Haitang couldn’t hold her back.
She marched confidently to the director’s office and stormed in.
“Director Yang! One of your employees, Chen Li, is cheating! You must help me get justice!”
Yang Kunming had just promised his old friend yesterday that once Chen Li and Lin Ting got their marriage certificate, he would help Chen Li get permanent staff status. Who would’ve thought the very next day Lin Ting would report Chen Li for cheating?
“Xiao Ting, what exactly happened?”
She explained everything in detail. Just as she finished, a voice came from behind:
“Director Yang, that’s not how it happened!”
“Professor Lin forced me to marry his daughter—I never agreed!”
“So she’s not my fiancée!”
Due to the sensitive political climate, the engagement between Lin Ting and Chen Li had only been a verbal agreement, and no witnesses were present. Lin Ting now found herself in a difficult position to defend.
Yang Kunming looked up in surprise at Chen Li. He didn’t know Chen Li well, but he trusted his old friend completely.
If Chen Li hadn’t agreed to marry his daughter, Yang never would’ve made such a recommendation. He wouldn’t joke about his daughter’s marriage.
Chen Li calmly met Yang’s gaze. He believed that even without Yang’s support, he would achieve success through his own intelligence.
After a long pause, Yang finally spoke:
“Then let’s invite Professor Lin and his wife here. We’ll get to the bottom of whether or not you agreed to marry their daughter.”
Chen Li’s face twisted in frustration, “They’re Lin Ting’s parents—they’ll obviously side with her!”
“Unless you can find an outsider to prove it!”
Yang rolled his eyes, “Professor Lin and his wife are well-respected in Nancheng. They wouldn’t tarnish their daughter’s reputation over a lie.”
Chen Li choked and had nothing more to say.
Yang picked up the phone and quickly explained the situation to someone on the other end. After receiving confirmation, he hung up.
“Everyone sit tight. Professor Lin and his family will be here soon.”
Hearing that she’d be seeing her family again, Lin Ting’s heart surged with emotion—she hadn’t seen them in so long.
Li Haitang looked like she was sitting on pins and needles. Meanwhile, Chen Li was full of confidence. In this life, he only wanted to marry the woman he truly loved.
As for Lin Ting?
Let’s see who dares to marry her. They’ll regret it soon enough.
