Qin Zheng remained silent, not moving her chopsticks, with her lips tightly pursed.
Shen Yanzhi didn’t wait for her reply.
He hid the hint of red in his eyes and picked up dishes for her, saying, “These are all your favorite dishes, Azheng, eat more, you’ve lost weight…”
Qin Zheng clenched her hands in front of her knees and said coldly, “I’m not hungry.”
Shen Yanzhi’s hand holding the chopsticks stiffened.
After putting a piece of goose breast in her bowl, he picked up the noodles in front of him.
Although there was still a smile on his face, it was a smile that contained endless bitterness. “Well, Azheng, just watch me eat, it counts as accompanying me.”
He lowered his head and ate the noodles in front of him in big mouthfuls, as if afraid that if he waited any longer, his emotions would no longer be able to be hidden.
A table full of delicacies, but the noodles in front of him seemed particularly out of place.
No one spoke in the room, only the sound of him eating noodles.
The door was half open, Qin Zheng sat in the bright light shining in from the door, and Shen Yanzhi sat in the dark corner near the door.
The boundary between the two seemed to be delineated even more clearly by this light.
Silence, silence, oppression, and it seemed that something was about to explode at any moment.
After eating a few bites, with more than half of the noodles left in his bowl, Shen Yanzhi didn’t pick up more noodles.
His knuckles holding the chopsticks turned white, his head hung so low that his expression couldn’t be seen clearly, but his voice was hoarse and heavy:
“The day you divorced me, you had the same cold expression, even looking at me more made you feel disgusted. You said I misunderstood you, you regretted marrying into the Eastern Palace, it wasn’t the crown prince forcing you, it was your own desire for wealth and status…”
He couldn’t continue, he turned his face away and covered his eyes with his hand, “I know you’re lying to me. You want me to hate you, to completely cut off my thoughts of you.”
Qin Zheng remained silent.
When she read the book, what distressed her was that the two of them clearly loved each other deeply, but separated by a palace wall, everything became a luxury.
Even if they met at a palace banquet, one was a courtier and the other was the crown prince’s consort, a second glance was considered overstepping, and the deep and silent pain, once made Qin Zheng cry so much.
But novels are novels, and reality is reality.
The Chu Kingdom had already perished, the true crown prince’s consort was already dead, and many things were doomed to never return.
Perhaps Qin Zheng’s cold appearance was too harsh.
Shen Yanzhi looked at her and smiled softly, the bandage in his palm oozing blood again, “To come to this point today, my biggest mistake is probably not being ruthless enough…
If I had just left the capital with you without any regard for anything, maybe everything would be different now.
But I couldn’t bear it, afraid that you would hate me, afraid that you would be sad, your sister, your father, your family, everything was more important than me, so what you abandoned was only me.”
As he spoke, Shen Yanzhi’s laughter changed from a low chuckle to a loud laugh.
He picked up the white jade wine pot beside him, without using a cup, just drank straight from the spout, the wine that was too late to swallow flowed down his chin into his clothes.
The wine was clear and refreshing, but it had a strong aftertaste, burning from the stomach all the way to the throat.
Shen Yanzhi wiped the wine stains from the corner of his mouth, his eyes red with intense emotion, his disheveled hair falling down.
His face, more delicate than a woman’s, was full of despair and mockery, “You didn’t do anything wrong, you just didn’t want me for the sake of your sister and family. I don’t hate you, I hate Chu Chengji, the entire Chu royal family deserves to die!”
With the last sentence, a fierce hatred burst out of his eyes, he slammed the wine pot heavily on the table, stood up leaning on the table, his eyes were red, disheveled, and crazy, hatred and pain intertwined, his gaze fixed on Qin Zheng, “But you said, he is your husband, you want to avoid suspicion for him and me?”
A tear rolled down from his eye, and it fell on the table with a bang.
Shen Yanzhi’s voice was trembling as he spoke, “Qin Zheng, I would rather you remember everything, I would rather you hate me to the bone, than for you to fall in love with such a scum after losing your memory!”
The throbbing pain under his left rib made Shen Yanzhi clench his hand tightly against it.
His overly pale face made him look like a snowman melting under the sun.
Qin Zheng, who had been silent all this time, finally spoke, “From now on, consider that the Qin Zheng who once liked you is dead. I am not her.”
Shen Yanzhi looked at her with eyes that seemed to pierce her soul, and laughed two ugly laughs, then staggered out of the room with the wine pot on the table.
Qin Zheng sat with her back to him at the table, never once looking back at him.
But the clenched fists on her knees tightened a bit more.
She probably knew why Shen Yanzhi suddenly went crazy.
He couldn’t accept that she still considered herself the crown prince’s wife.
After all, his situation with the crown prince’s consort was because the crown prince had interfered.
If Shen Yanzhi’s love for the crown prince’s consort was extreme, then his hatred for the crown prince was also extreme, to the point where he might not be able to control his desire for revenge.
After Shen Yanzhi left the courtyard where Qin Zheng lived, he went straight to the study.
He swept the documents and ink on the desk to the ground, and the servants outside the door cowered, afraid to come in and clean up while he was angry.
He sat sprawled in the grand chair, his messy hair falling down.
After drinking, his eyes were even redder, and the bandage soaked with blood dripped blood onto the ground, making him look like a fragile porcelain.
When Chen Qing entered with a letter and a brocade box, Shen Yanzhi stared fixedly in one direction, without moving his eyes at all.
Chen Qing avoided the mess on the ground and placed the letter and the brocade box on the desk. “Master, it’s a letter from the palace.”
Perhaps because he had drunk too much and was still angry, Shen Yanzhi’s head was now throbbing, and he opened the letter from his younger sister.
Shen Yanzhi’s mother passed away early, and less than a year after his mother’s death, the Prince Rong ( Shen Yanzhi’s father ) took a concubine.
The new concubine gave birth to a chubby boy less than eight months after entering the Prince Rong’s residence.
The Shen family claimed that the child was premature, but everyone could see that he was full-term.
The new concubine was already two months pregnant when she entered the Prince Rong’s residence.
After the new concubine gave birth to a son, she became more established in the Prince Rong’s residence, and the status of Shen Yanzhi’s siblings became more less important.
The servants all knew that the new concubine wanted to fight for the position of the head for her son.
Although the stepmother did not mistreat Shen Yanzhi’s siblings openly, she used soft tactics.
In order to protect his younger sister, Shen Chan was guarded by Shen Yanzhi everyday.
At that time, he held two precious gems in his hands, one was Qin Zheng and the other was Shen Chan.
But later, one of the precious gems was taken away by the crown prince, Qin Zheng.
The other precious gem, while he was still in the military, was given as a concubine to someone else by the greedy Shen family, His sister.
During the Battle of Qinxiangguan, the Shen family sent a secret letter, and Shen Chan was in Li Xin’s tent.
His good father and stepmother, fearing that he would not agree to align with the Shen family, gave his sister to Li Xin as a concubine.
When Luo Xian learned of the news, he thought that Shen Yanzhi had long colluded with the rebels and wanted to execute him in front of the army…
Every step, he calculated tightly.
One wrong step, and it led to more mistakes.
There was no turning back.
After the Battle of Qinxiangguan, Shen Yanzhi was burdened with endless infamy.
The first thing he did when he returned was to wildly swing his sword and kill his stepmother and her son.
They had plotted against him, so he wanted to see them go to hell, and see who would benefit from their schemes.
It was also from that moment on that Shen Yanzhi realized clearly that those who should be killed should be killed early, regardless of the consequences.
Otherwise, one would never know when those despicable scum would strike at your life and take away everything you cherished.
Having walked all this way bathed in the blood of his comrades, Shen Yanzhi knew that he was going to hell, but so what? As long as he was still alive, he had to pick up his two precious gems from the mud again.
After reading the letter, Shen Yanzhi felt that his headache had worsened.
Chen Qing knew what day it was today.
He thought that the letter sent by Shen Chan was to congratulate him, but seeing Shen Yanzhi’s gloomy expression, he couldn’t help but ask, “Master, is there trouble in the palace?”
Shen Yanzhi closed his eyes. “Chan’er is pregnant.”
There was no joy on his face.
Chen Qing knew that his master cherished the princess.
She was originally a noble lady, but was sent by her family to serve someone the same age as Prince Rong.
He was silent for a moment before he said, “Master, this is a good thing.”
As long as Shen Chan gave birth to a prince, then the one sitting on the dragon throne today, if he suddenly had a stroke or died suddenly, the Shen family would be able to establish the young prince as the emperor.
Shen Yanzhi opened his eyes, and his sharp gaze was filled with killing intent. “Do you think the Li family will let her safely give birth to the child?”
Chen Qing thought for a moment and broke out in a cold sweat.
The person on the dragon throne was now so guarded against the Shen family.
If he knew that Shen Chan was pregnant, Shen Chan would be in danger in the palace.
The intrigue between palace concubines was nothing, but in the deep palace, the most frightening thing was when the emperor wanted you dead.
Chen Qing’s face changed. “Master, what should we do?”
The headache seemed to slow down the train of thought.
Shen Yanzhi pressed his throbbing temple and said slowly, “For now, Chan’er is pretending to be ill and hiding it from the palace. I will write a letter to the Shen family, asking them to find an excuse to let Chan’er leave the palace for a peaceful rest, and we’ll deal with everything after the child is born.”
He naturally knew that if a palace concubine left the palace without following the rules for several months, the palace was full of the emperor’s people.
If Shen Chan continued to stay in the palace and was exposed, the Shen family would not be able to help even if they wanted to.
After his mother passed away, he only regarded Shen Chan as his only relative in this world.
He didn’t protect his younger sister back then, so he absolutely would not allow Shen Chan to have any accidents now.
Shen Yanzhi wrote a letter and asked Chen Qing to send it back to the Shen family in the capital with all possible speed.
After Chen Qing bowed and left with the letter, he hesitated for a moment, but still said, “Master, happy birthday.”
After Chen Qing left, Shen Yanzhi looked at the empty study.
His lips, which used to remember his birthday, were now bitter.
He used to remember only Shen Chan and Qin Zheng’s birthdays.
But now, his sister was trapped within the palace walls, and his Qin Zheng had completely forgotten about him.
Shen Yanzhi slumped in the grand chair, tilting his head back and laughing aloud.
He raised the back of his hand to his eyes, but large drops of tears fell from his eyes.
His Life, Shen Yanzhi, had lived a pretty failed life.

Oh man.. this guy has had a terrible life. I do feel bad for him in that his circumstances aren’t his fault. His stepmom and dad def deserve his loathing. But his actions led to the death of a thousand innocents.
I don’t know if I feel more pity or repulsion for Shen Yanzhi. On the one hand it sounds like his life has sucked, but he’s also pretty crazy and unhealthily obsessive in his relationships. He’s too extreme in carrying things out, which certainly leads to hatred and retaliation against him, endangering his loved ones even more. But would being less crazy lead to them being safer, or would he just seem weak? Basically ancient times are fraught with peril, and neither way is safe. Obviously I prefer the former emperor because he’s not only capable, he’s very rational.
I’m not sure he did anything to deserve his wretched life…don’t agree that he was weak, just that the circumstances pushed him over the edge. Eager to see more of ML’s personality as well.
