Ruan Qingzhi was an extreme face-con—someone obsessed with good looks.
In her past life, her phone had been filled with collections of handsome men. Though these digital husbands each had their own unique charm, combined, they couldn’t hold a candle to the breathtaking beauty of the man before her now.
She stepped slowly toward the hospital bed.
The closer she got, the clearer his features became.
His bone structure was exquisite—his nose bridge tall and straight, the contours from beneath his ears refined and delicate. At the edge of his earlobe rested a tiny mole, alluring and tempting, as if inviting someone to claim it.
Ruan Qingzhi licked her lips, her gaze lingering on Shen Zhanwu’s mesmerizing face as a sluggish thought spun in her mind—
Maybe this marriage doesn’t have to end after all.
The sudden idea startled her, her long, curled lashes fluttering slightly.
Her eyes traced the dark stubble of his hair, down to his cool, pale skin, lingering on his thin lips and the sharp, prominent Adam’s apple.
Suddenly, a crisp female voice came from behind:
“Who are you? What are you doing here?”
Ruan Qingzhi slowly gathered her thoughts and turned calmly, her cool gaze sweeping over the woman as she countered, “And who are you? What are you doing here?”
Lin Ruzhen frowned. “I asked you first, and now you’re questioning me?”
Ruan Qingzhi crossed her arms, raising an eyebrow with a faint smile. “Is there some rule that says you can ask me questions, but I can’t ask you? What, are you from the police station or the civil service office? Even if you were, you’d have to show your credentials before interrogating someone!”
Lin Ruzhen’s frown deepened. “Are you going to answer or not? If not, I’ll call the police to take you away for questioning!”
Ruan Qingzhi wasn’t the least bit intimidated.
She pulled over a chair and sat down, leaning back casually before raising a hand in a go ahead gesture. “Be my guest,” she said indifferently.
What did she have to fear?
Being by her man’s side wasn’t a crime!
Lin Ruzhen, seeing her indifferent attitude – like a dead pig unafraid of boiling water – grew furious and jabbed a finger toward the door. “If you don’t leave right now, I’ll call someone to drag you out!”
Ruan Qingzhi sat sideways, one arm resting on the back of the chair, two slender fingers propped against her temple.
She looked completely at ease.
With a sidelong glance at the woman, she smirked inwardly.
Did she think I was stupid?
A woman dressed to the nines, with hair so stiff it looked like she’d slathered two pounds of hair gel on it, walking into Shen Zhanwu’s hospital room—what else could she be but a vulture?
She didn’t look like someone here to care for a patient.
More like an admirer.
And if that were the case…
Well, this just got interesting.
As Ruan Qingzhi thought this, her gaze held a trace of amusement.
Just as tensions were about to boil over, a young soldier walked in. Spotting Lin Ruzhen, he said casually, “Dr. Lin, why are you standing there? Come sit—”
Before he could finish, he noticed Ruan Qingzhi and blinked in surprise. “And this is… a friend of yours, Dr. Lin?”
Ruan Qingzhi stood up and introduced herself.
“Hello, comrade. My name is Ruan Qingzhi. I’m—” She paused briefly, her eyes flicking toward the woman’s face. “Shen Zhanwu’s wife.”
Li Kanshan’s eyes widened. “…What?”
Lin Ruzhen shrieked, “That’s impossible!!”
She rushed up to Ruan Qingzhi, scanning her up and down, her meticulously made-up face twisted with disbelief and disdain. “You? His wife?”
Ruan Qingzhi met her gaze evenly. “If I’m not, then are you?”
“……”
Lin Ruzhen wished she were Shen Zhanwu’s wife.
She had known Zhanwu for six years.
She had fallen in love with him at first sight, secretly giving him her heart. After spending time with him, she became even more determined—she would marry no one but Shen Zhanwu. She had hinted at her feelings for him countless times, both overtly and subtly.
Yet, time and again, Shen Zhanwu had rejected her with unwavering seriousness.
But she wasn’t afraid of rejection!
She could wait!
No matter how long it took, she had faith in herself.
Shen Zhanwu would, one day, be her husband!
Now, with Shen Zhanwu hovering between life and death and the doctors in Shengyang at a loss, Lin Ruzhen actually felt a flicker of joy in her heart. She believed that fate had finally taken pity on her, delivering this golden opportunity straight into her hands.
Because she came from a family of renowned physicians.
Her uncle was a top-tier professor in the medical field, and two days ago, she had urgently requested that he rush to Shengyang.
Once Shen Zhanwu woke up, his life would belong to her.
Getting married? That was nothing.
Just as her plans were about to come to fruition, this shabby, low-class woman—inferior to her in every way—suddenly appeared, claiming to be Shen Zhanwu’s wife.
How could she possibly accept this?!
Meanwhile, Li Kanshan, still reeling from shock, instinctively glanced at Lin Ruzhen.
Everyone in the battalion knew that Dr. Lin had been in love with their deputy battalion commander for years. Rumors even said that the reason she remained unmarried at thirty was because she was waiting for him.
Now, out of nowhere, Deputy Battalion Commander Shen had a wife. Dr. Lin must be fuming.
Realizing this, Li Kanshan snapped back to attention and looked between the two women.
Sure enough—the air was thick with gunpowder.
He quickly stepped forward to mediate.
“Comrade, are you really our deputy battalion commander’s wife?”
Ruan Qingzhi turned her gaze to him. “As real as it gets.”
Lin Ruzhen took an aggressive step forward, her voice sharp with accusation.
“How can you prove you’re Shen Zhanwu’s wife? Just by saying so? Anyone can lie! Admit it—who sent you here to frame him? Are you trying to strike while he’s vulnerable? Let me make this clear: as long as I, Lin Ruzhen, am by Zhanwu’s side, you won’t lay a finger on him!”
Ruan Qingzhi’s eyes turned icy as she smirked. “I don’t owe you any proof.”
Then, she turned back to Li Kanshan and asked solemnly,
“Comrade, I received word three days ago about your deputy battalion commander’s injury. What’s his current condition? How did the surgery go?”
Li Kanshan introduced himself first.
“Sister-in-law, my name is Li Kanshan. You can call me Kanshan or Shanzi.”
The moment Lin Ruzhen heard him call her sister-in-law, her eyes blazed with fury. She stomped her foot and shrieked, cutting him off.
“Li Kanshan!! How dare you side with an outsider?! Are you even a soldier anymore?! Can’t you see how obviously suspicious she is? She’s clearly a spy! Calling her sister-in-law-have you lost your mind?!”
