The Peasant Girl got Rich and Died, and her Ex-husband Cried for Two Miles Chapter 17

Chapter 17: More Surprises Await

“By doing this, the public will get to know you better—there will be gains, but also losses.”

Chen Hao didn’t elaborate, but both Ruonan and Jiewen understood clearly.

Becoming the spokespersons for the convenience store meant making their relationship with Chen Hao public. This would bring them more attention and support, but could also attract some hostility.

They had anticipated this when they chose to follow Chen Hao.

Every choice comes with pros and cons—the key is weighing which side matters more.

At the moment, the benefits clearly outweighed the risks, especially since Chen Hao had already offered them the store’s advertising roles.

Noticing it was getting late, and the girls’ arms were sore from the massage,

Chen Hao waved his hand, signaling the end of the session, and said:

“That’s it for today. Go get some rest and come see me tomorrow at the Jiashangban HR Company.”

“Before you leave, make sure to find Ah Liang at the bar and grab some wine.”

This time, Jiewen didn’t object. She apologized to Ruonan and left Chen Hao’s office.

Ruonan felt a little disappointed—nothing had happened tonight that went beyond friendship. Even though Chen Hao had promised never to act against her will, she hadn’t even gotten the chance to express her feelings.

Still, she comforted herself, thinking: There’s always another chance—just wait and see.

The two of them exited the office together and found bartender Ah Liang at the bar, who started chatting with them about Chen Hao.

As a thoughtful employee of the new boss, understanding his preferences was part of the job—especially information related to the convenience store, such as the news that all Hung Hing members would enjoy a 50% discount.

Hearing this, Ruonan and Jiewen were stunned speechless. Such generosity was rare—it really seemed like Chen Hao was someone who didn’t mind spending big.

Ruonan hugged Jiewen with concern, saying, “The boss is being way too extravagant. Let’s talk to him about it tomorrow, okay?”

Jiewen nodded in agreement.

Then Ah Liang respectfully handed them two bottles of Lafite red wine packed by Brother Hao, and affectionately addressed them as “Sister-in-law.”

Jiewen blushed slightly but didn’t refute the title as she accepted the wine. In contrast, Ruonan smiled and praised Ah Liang’s sharp eye:

“You’re a clever one, aren’t you?”

She laughed, and Ah Liang bowed repeatedly. “Take care, ladies.”

Other little brothers around echoed his words.

Surrounded by the calls of “Sister-in-law,” the two women felt as if they were walking on clouds, their steps light and airy—like free-spirited fairies.

Watching them leave with the Lafite, Ah Liang wore a satisfied smile.

To promote the store and spread the news about Chen Hao’s women, he had deliberately leaked the information—the boss’s women were naturally called Sister-in-law by the brothers.

Having them help supervise each other? That was a win-win. After all, none of them wanted to see the boss’s money spent so recklessly.

As they were leaving the bar, Jiewen whispered:

“Is this really okay? What if the boss gets mad?”

Ruonan rolled her eyes. “You didn’t stop them from calling us sister-in-law back there, did you?”

Of course Jiewen had wanted to stop them. Ruonan knew exactly what was on her mind—no words were needed between them.

Ruonan playfully slapped Jiewen on her firm backside, causing her to yelp:

“Hey! What are you doing? Don’t joke around like that here!”

Ruonan grinned, savoring the moment, thinking: Having a sister like this doesn’t feel bad at all—she’s nearly my equal.

Then she laughed and said:

“Alright, I know you like the boss too—no need to pretend.”

“No matter how we compete as sisters, at least the benefits stay in the family. Better that than giving him away to someone else.”

“Let’s think about what to do tomorrow—how to catch the boss’s attention!”

Hearing this, the smile on Jiewen’s face quickly faded into a worried frown.

That night, as silence fell, Chen Hao returned home. Suddenly, a system notification rang in his ears:

[Ding! Today’s income: 1.3745 million HKD. 10x critical bonus activated: 13.745 million HKD, automatically deposited to your account.]

[Total assets increased from 2.929 million HKD to 16.674 million HKD.]

Chen Hao froze on the spot.

He had expected a good return today, but never imagined it would be this astounding.

Thinking it over, the numbers made sense: every restock for the store cost about 100,000 HKD. With Hung Hing members getting 50% off, that translated into roughly 50,000 HKD of real turnover.

After four major restocks, the cumulative return was understandably massive.

Under normal conditions, a convenience store with 5,000 HKD in daily sales would already be doing well.

But today’s booming sales came from the 50% discount offer, and ironically, the troublemakers Slick Kun and Babi had tried to stir trouble—only to end up making Chen Hao even more money.

Chen Hao chuckled at the thought: If one day Kun and Babi find out they’re actually making me rich instead of bankrupting me, what kind of face will they make?

He could already picture their furious expressions in his mind.

Sai Wan, early morning.

Barker was still asleep when he was awakened by urgent knocking and sobbing outside the door.

Groggily opening it, he was stunned to see Cuilian, his old flame, standing there with tears streaming down her face.

“Brother Ji, you… you have to help my brother!”

She cried hysterically.

“He was badly beaten and is now in the hospital—he’s in critical condition!”

“If anything happens to him, I don’t want to live either…”

She choked with grief, unable to form proper sentences as images of her brother Fei Biao’s broken limbs flashed through her mind.

Hearing her out, Barker let out a long sigh.

He knew Fei Biao all too well. That guy relied on Cuilian’s relationship with him, flaunting Barker’s name and causing havoc all over Sai Wan, tarnishing Hung Hing’s reputation.

Many tolerated him out of respect for Barker, but Fei Biao had narrowly escaped death multiple times.

And yet, Fei Biao was smart enough to know that his reputation held no weight outside Sai Wan, so he only dared to cause trouble within their turf.

This time, someone must’ve finally had enough.

Still, Fei Biao was Cuilian’s younger brother.

Back then, Cuilian had been the light of his youth—the woman who made him a man.

Sadly, fate intervened. Her father rejected Barker for being poor, and she married a wealthy old man instead.

After the old man died, they briefly got back together—but the romance didn’t last long. With age and beauty fading, Cuilian no longer held the same allure. Their reunion was more about closure than passion.

Yet she clung to him like a shadow, to the point of being a burden.

Annoyed, Barker waved his hand:

“Fine. Go back for now—I’ll look into what happened.”

Cuilian, unwilling to leave, pleaded:

“Brother Ji, that’s my real brother!”

“I know you don’t like him, but for the sake of our past, can’t you help him just this once? Get some payback?”

Her words ignited Barker’s fury. He roared:

“If Fei Biao weren’t your brother, I’d have taught him a lesson long ago!”

“He’s always throwing my name around to act like a thug—he nearly turned me into a laughingstock!”

Cuilian fell silent at his outburst and quietly turned away.

In her heart, she knew Barker no longer had feelings for her now that she was older and no longer beautiful.

Once, she had married an old man. After his death, his children tried to force her out without a penny.

Luckily, by then Barker was already a leader in Hung Hing. With his power, she managed to claim a portion of the inheritance.

It was then that Cuilian realized: Without power, a woman has no place in this world. Her only option on Hong Kong Island was to cling to Barker.

Even though his attitude had grown cold, she was not about to let go.

After sending her off, Barker returned to his turf, annoyed and restless. As soon as he walked in, he spotted the busy Brother Qiang.

He waved him over.

“Ah Qiang, come here.”

Qiang responded with a smile and walked over.

“Help me look into what happened to Fei Biao last night.”

Barker asked immediately.

But Qiang didn’t move. He looked hesitant.

Seeing the hesitation, Barker was puzzled. “Why haven’t you moved?”

After a moment’s pause, Qiang replied:

“Brother Ji, I already know about it.”

Barker’s eyes lit up. “Tell me—who cleaned up that scumbag for us?”
