Chapter 27: Midnight Warning!
“Ah…”
Liu San’s piercing scream echoed through the air.
Although she wasn’t injured, she was still greatly frightened.
Her eyes were filled with anger as she glared at Lu Chuan and Su Ruan.
“You… you actually dared to treat me like this?”
Liu San felt a bit guilty.
Lu Chuan, however, didn’t care much.
“Aunt San, I’m really sorry! But my family’s grain supply isn’t enough. I’m still worried about how to manage when the officials come to collect the year’s taxes in a few days!”
“As for my wives…”
“Please don’t worry about them!”
“I happen to like this kind of life, Aunt San. Take care, and don’t let the door hit you on the way out…”
After saying that, Lu Chuan turned around and didn’t bother to look at the furious Liu San, who was stamping her feet.
“You see, I told you, the trouble is just beginning!”
Lu Chuan shrugged helplessly.
“Plus, this is actually a favorable situation.”
He added.
People hate others who are doing well, laugh at others who are doing poorly, despise the poor, and fear the rich!
It’s human nature.
The villagers originally ridiculed Lu Chuan because his family was poor. Furthermore, the land they received during the land distribution was one of the least fertile plots in the village, so the crops yielded very little.
As a result, every year was a constant struggle.
This year, many even froze to death in the harsh snowstorms.
Now, the poor are suddenly wealthy!
The first people to be provoked were, of course, those who had previously looked down on him.
“Master…”
At this moment, Bai Siyu’s face showed some concern. She paused for a moment before speaking, “Maybe you should avoid going into the mountains for a few days?”
“Are you scared?”
Lu Chuan smiled.
He could tell that Bai Siyu wasn’t very good at dealing with these trivial matters.
“Mm!”
Bai Siyu felt a little embarrassed. “It’s not that I’m scared, I just find it a bit troublesome.”
“It’s fine. Over the next few days, I’ll try to make some bricks and repair our house.”
“No need to go up the mountain. After I handle these things, I’ll go to the county town again.”
Lu Chuan still needed to buy some more grain.
And, of course, the weaving loom that Bai Siyu had been thinking about.
“Actually…”
At this point, Su Ruan sighed. “Actually, sometimes I understand them.”
“Although I’m not from the army, I’ve been to many places and seen the suffering of the people.”
“Nowadays, although the military conflict in the Bingzhou region has decreased, the lives of the common people are still not easy. Most of them barely manage to survive.”
“And because of that, it’s natural for them to become more calculating.”
She sighed again.
“However, understanding doesn’t mean accepting!”
“When it actually happens to you, it still feels unfair, and it’s infuriating!”
Lu Chuan patted Su Ruan’s head. “Alright, don’t overthink it. Leave these matters to me!”
Meanwhile, Chen Miaomiao stood quietly aside.
She didn’t speak, almost like a wooden figure.
But in her heart, she had some strange thoughts.
Lu Chuan didn’t seem so detestable after all.
But what should they do from now on?
Could it be that they would really have to continue living like this?
As she thought about it, Chen Miaomiao couldn’t help but feel a little melancholic.
That night…
Chen Miaomiao lay uneasily in bed.
Su Ruan was lying beside her.
“You…”
Chen Miaomiao started to speak, as if she wanted to ask something.
However, in the end, she remained silent.
“Dieyi…”
At this moment, Su Ruan spoke in a calm voice, neither sad nor happy, as if she were discussing something trivial. However, her tone carried a sense of detachment that made it seem somewhat distant.
“I can feel that you have an unusual aura about you. After looking carefully, I can tell that you are probably not Han, right?”
Chen Miaomiao was momentarily stunned but did not speak.
“I don’t care about your identity, nor do I care what mission you’re on!”
“Or where you might go in the future!”
“Since you’re in this house, just stay here quietly and simply. As the head of the household, I will treat you well!”
“Whether it’s food or other necessities, as long as we have it, we won’t be harsh with you!”
“But, you must never bring any trouble from outside into this house!”
“Although I have some skills, this family really can’t withstand any storms!”
Su Ruan spoke in a calm tone: “You can take my words as heartfelt advice, or you can take them as a threat!”
“If one day I find that our peaceful life is disrupted because of you, I will not let you off!”
Su Ruan’s voice was cold!
Chen Miaomiao paused for a moment.
“I know a little about your situation. Don’t you want revenge?” Chen Miaomiao said.
Su Ruan didn’t know how to respond.
“I don’t know. If I said I have no thoughts of revenge, it would definitely be a lie. But, even if I want revenge, I will never involve the head of the household!”
Chen Miaomiao turned to look at Su Ruan.
Her gaze seemed to carry some doubt.
“Since you’re with him, you can never separate yourself from him. Your identity, Bai Suyu’s identity, or even my identity!”
“Though it seems trivial now, to him, it could destroy him at any moment!”
Chen Miaomiao spoke faintly.
“I won’t allow such a thing to happen!” Su Ruan said calmly.
“You don’t understand him. You’ve only been here a few days, so why do you support him so much?”
Chen Miaomiao was somewhat puzzled, her gaze filled with questions.
“You don’t understand!”
“But you will.”
Su Ruan said something cryptic.
Chen Miaomiao didn’t ask any further and slowly closed her eyes.
The next day!
After Lu Chuan woke up, he first practiced a set of punches in the yard.
In just a few days, Lu Chuan felt that his body had become much stronger. When he swung his fists, he could hear the whooshing sound of the wind.
Su Ruan watched Lu Chuan practicing his punches, her gaze revealing some surprise.
Lu Chuan’s progress seemed a bit too fast.
Lu Chuan also found it strange. He noticed that when practicing Xingyi Boxing this time, it was different from his previous life!
It was much smoother!
He didn’t encounter any of the troubles or difficulties that he had before.
This made Lu Chuan feel a bit puzzled.
However, this was ultimately a good thing.
After finishing his punch practice, Lu Chuan began to stack bricks for the kiln.
In fact, stacking bricks wasn’t a particularly difficult task; for those who know how, it’s not hard.
What really gave Lu Chuan trouble was the firing process.
When firing the bricks, the temperature had to reach between 1000 and 1200 degrees!
Maintaining it at around 1100 degrees was ideal.
Too low, and it wouldn’t work. Too high, and it wouldn’t work either.
But right now, there was no way to test the temperature, so he had to keep firing the bricks and testing them.
He adjusted the size and position of the vents.
Also, the fuel for the firing process—finding coal wasn’t easy these days!
