Chapter 4 – His Terrifying Selfishness
“I don’t want a single cent of your assets, but custody of our son must go to me!”
Ruan Liuzheng seemed to recall something. She lifted her chin and pointed at the document folder on the coffee table. Her cool, crisp voice carried a commanding tone that allowed no room for objection.
Her apricot eyes were calm and resolute—completely devoid of any lingering infatuation for Fu Yanci.
Fu Yanci’s eyes widened slightly as he stared at her in shock.
To him, Ruan Liuzheng had always been soft and gentle—like flowing water. While she was capable, she never had a temper or personality of her own. Like a clay doll, she yielded to all his demands.
But now, this Ruan Liuzheng—strong-willed, assertive, decisive, and carrying a unique feminine resilience—was like someone he had never met before.
As expected, Fu Yanci was completely stunned.
“No need to be so surprised. You’re the one at fault. I’m already making concessions. Fu Yanci, if you’re smart, sign the papers and stop wasting my time!”
Ruan Liuzheng lifted her wrist and glanced at her watch. Her cold, impatient expression was a perfect reflection of the humiliation he had once inflicted on her—now returned in full.
Fu Yanci came back to his senses and frowned slightly as he glanced at the document folder on the table. “Just because I gave the CFO position to Huanqing? Ruan Liuzheng, when did you become so petty?”
Ruan Liuzheng’s gaze darkened. “Is it pettiness—or are you being emotional and biased?”
“Emotional?”
Fu Yanci scoffed, as if he had heard the world’s funniest joke. He let out a couple of low chuckles, then looked up at her with disdain in his eyes.
“Huanqing has dual degrees from a top international university. She’s received offers from global venture capital firms. Working at Fu Group is beneath her.”
“Ruan Liuzheng, you were the one who forced her to study abroad back then. Now that she’s so accomplished, you’re jealous…”
He paused and shook his head, sighing as though disappointed. “Huanqing has never blamed you. But you—Ruan Liuzheng—you’re too narrow-minded.”
Ruan Liuzheng stared at the look of pity on his face and listened to the disappointment in his tone. Her eyes were full of irony and contempt.
Taking a deep breath, she replied coldly, “Let me make this absolutely clear—Wanqing went abroad because she was reported for plagiarism. It had nothing to do with me.
Right now, I only want a divorce!”
“Then let me tell you this—you can dream on!”
Seeing that Ruan Liuzheng was still being stubborn, even trying to justify herself, Fu Yanci stood up, walked straight to her, and tore the divorce agreement to shreds right in front of her face.
Looking down at her, he spoke coldly, “The Fu Group can’t afford the scandal of a president’s divorce. And from the moment you married me, you should’ve understood—people like us don’t divorce easily.”
He had just taken over the presidency of Fu Group, and his position was still unstable. The old chairman—his grandfather—hadn’t fully placed his trust in him and still held the majority of the company’s shares.
At a time like this, he had to be extremely cautious. Any scandal could be detrimental.
Not to mention, the old man adored children—there was no way he’d let Ruan Liuzheng take the child away.
Weighing the pros and cons in his mind, Fu Yanci’s gaze grew colder.
Ruan Liuzheng looked up at him and sneered. “And what about Bai Wanqing? Are you really going to let her stay a shameful mistress forever?”
Fu Yanci’s eyes twitched slightly. Thoughts of the recently departed Bai Huanqing made his lips press into a tight line.
After a long moment, he said, with a trace of struggle in his eyes, “Wanqing isn’t a mistress. She’s understanding. She knows how to support me.”
For the sake of the company, he could only let her suffer for now.
Ruan Liuzheng raised her gaze, staring coldly at his handsome face.
Inside, she felt nothing but desolation.
Fu Yanci was undeniably attractive—sharp features, deep, affectionate eyes that looked like flower petals, with long, upturned corners. He looked like someone capable of tenderness and devotion.
But in reality, he cared only for one thing: interests.
Even the Bai Wanqing he claimed to cherish was nothing but a pawn to him.
A man like this would never know how to love anyone. The only person who truly mattered to him—was himself.
His selfishness was terrifying.
Back then, she must’ve been blind to fall for his fake tenderness.
Ruan Liuzheng closed her eyes and gave a light laugh—mocking herself for being so naive, so foolish.
Then she opened her eyes, took a deep breath, and spoke in an icy tone:
“Fu Yanci, I will get this divorce. If you refuse to sign, then wait for the court summons.”
With that, she gave him one last frosty glance, stood up, and walked out of the office with unwavering resolve.
She refused to let one piece of rot ruin another nine years of her life. It simply wasn’t worth it.
Back in the Finance Department…
The moment Ruan Liuzheng stepped through the door, she saw her belongings dumped outside the office. Trinkets and unsigned documents were scattered across the floor in a complete mess.
Her assistant, Mi Le, was squatting down and picking up her things one by one.
But as soon as she picked up an item, another would be tossed out from the office.
The other employees stood around Mi Le in a circle, watching.
When they saw Ruan Liuzheng, their expressions were a mix of amusement, sympathy, and concern.
Ruan Liuzheng had strong capabilities and was meticulous in her work. In just five years, she had become Deputy Director of Finance.
In doing so, she had undoubtedly stepped on many toes. Some people were jealous. Others respected her. Many simply envied her.
Ruan Liuzheng’s eyes turned cold. She ignored the gazes around her and walked calmly over to Mi Le, gently helping her up.
Then her eyes passed through the open office door and landed coldly on Bai Huanqing inside. Her voice carried a chilly edge:
“Don’t bother picking it up. It’s all just trash.”
She glanced down at the items scattered across the floor, her eyes full of irony.
They were all trivial trinkets Fu Yanci had once given her—cheap and meaningless.
He had handed them to her casually, yet she had cherished them like treasures, keeping them spotless for years.
As for the documents, she had begged Jiang Ze to bring them over so she could help lighten Fu Yanci’s workload.
During her five years at Fu Group, beyond handling the Finance Department, she also took on duties from the president’s office—essentially working two jobs.
She hadn’t even studied finance originally. To handle those tasks, she had thrown herself into learning, sacrificing sleep and meals.
That was how, at such a young age, she ended up with a serious stomach condition.
But Ruan Liuzheng had never felt tired. In fact, she had felt happy—proud that she could help Fu Yanci, delighted that she mattered to him.
Looking back now, all she could feel was:
How utterly pathetic she had been.
