[edited]
Jiang Ning acted ruthlessly; she called the rabbits to line up on the side while she put the things into her space.
Sure enough, three big cockroaches were kicked out of the space and were instantly destroyed by the rabbits.
In 1801, she replicated the process. She believed they were not completely wiped out yet.
In 1803, there were more, so she had to let the rabbits find them on their own.
The 17th floor was also busy, they heard that the big cockroaches had gnawed holes in the grain bags, and Grandma Zhong almost fell while getting rid of them.
Jiang Ning thought for a moment and sent two rabbits down.
She avoided sending too many, to keep her supplies hidden.
But since they didn’t need feeding anyway, they might as well stay permanently on the 17th floor.
Watching the rabbits crunching away, Grandma Zhong’s eyes nearly popped out of her head.
She had lived for over sixty years and had seen all sorts of things, but she had truly never seen anything like this before!
Grandma Zhong was deeply moved by the help from the 18th floor. Who said they were demons? They were a thousand times better than those wolves in human skin.
The garbage was continuously flowing, and the threat of the big cockroaches was deeply concerning.
Turning on the radio, there were constant appeals from relevant departments to pay attention to the cleanliness of living environments and to create a civilized society by not littering.
Every community and every floor had empty rooms. Someone suggested that residents use covered containers to store waste and wait for workers to collect it after the flood subsided.
The ultimate consequence of littering not only affected oneself but also bred more pests.
Some survivors listened, while others continued to do as they pleased.
The big cockroaches still ran rampant, but the 18th floor was clean and sanitary, and with the rabbits acting as guardians, they gradually disappeared.
The 17th floor was the same, but Grandma Zhong’s balcony was not sealed.
Although there were still occasional appearances of big cockroaches, their numbers were few, while they continued to multiply on other floors.
Jiang Ning seriously doubted: were these pest intelligent?
Did they think the 17th and 18th floors were tough to deal with, so they gradually stopped coming up?
“Definitely!”
Lu Yu spoke with certainty. Even the rabbits had mutated, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the big cockroaches became smarter.
Zhang Chao agreed. Under absolute power, the big cockroaches were intimidated!
Jiang Ning nudged Huo Yishen with her elbow, “What do you think?”
Huo Yishen hesitated, “Anything is possible.”
…
In the middle of the night, as she was drifting off to sleep, a sudden loud noise came from the living room.
Jiang Ning was awakened and grumbled, “Coke?”
It was so late at night, did they really have to disturb her sleep?
Coke issued a warning growl and ran around wildly.
Jiang Ning woke up completely, rolled over, got out of bed, and turned on the light.
In the living room, the dog pounced onto the sofa, and it fiercely bit onto something. Then it threw something to the ground ferociously and kept beating it…
Shining the flashlight over, it turned out to be a plump old mouse.
With red eyes!
This mouse probably hadn’t encountered a dog before and it dared to fight back against Coke.
Coke was furious, and it instantly drew blood from it.
When Coke catches a rat, it doesn’t bite it to death; it keeps it alive to torment slowly: “You little thing, run away, hurry up!”
It ran away only to be bitten back and pressed onto the ground for repeated beating.
Seeing the blood stains on the ground, Jiang Ning thought, “…” It was too brutal.
The rabbits heard the commotion and hurried out to join in the fun.
Just as they rushed over, they were almost bitten to death by the red eyed mouse.
Seeing her followers being bullied, Coke growled and bit the red eyed mouse to death. Who dared to bully its followers?
The rabbits were now very brave and had no restrictions on what they ate. Jiang Ning quickly threw the dead mouse into her space and buried it in the black soil garden.
Coke bounced around the room, grumbling and muttering something in its mouth.
It was one thing for the big cockroaches to appear out of nowhere, but where did the red eyed mouse come from?
Jiang Ning used a flashlight to investigate and found that the stainless-steel screen of the balcony had been bitten to pieces, and a piece of the edge of the glass next to it had also been chewed off, and then it got in through the hole.
She took out some rat poison and sprinkled it around the opening.
Just as she was about to leave, she noticed a faint strange smell, with one area nearby being damp.
Huh, Coke actually peed here.
She was about to scold Coke for being unhygienic, but then Jiang Ning thought better of it and didn’t say anything.
Coke was always clean and never peed randomly.
Although it meddled in matters that didn’t concern it, it could catch rats, so marking its territory with urine should serve as a warning.
To prove her theory, she searched around and indeed found traces of urine on the small balcony in the kitchen, in the bathroom, and in the room where the rabbits lived.
Fortunately, her own room was untouched, and Coke itself was guarding it.
Thinking of the ferocity of the red eyed mouse, Jiang Ning picked up her walkie-talkie and contacted Huo Yishen, “The red eyed mouse is here.”
After confirming their relationship, they didn’t turn off the walkie-talkie; they would talk for a few minutes every night before going to bed.
With the batteries not lacking, keeping the walkie-talkie on meant they could contact each other at any time if needed.
Huo Yishen, half-asleep, responded quickly, “Did it bite you?”
“No, it was discovered by Coke.” Jiang Ning was somewhat worried. “They seem to have become very ferocious. They dared to fight after being bitten half to death by Coke.”
Huo Yishen got up to inspect; the doors, windows, and balcony were intact.
The walkie-talkie for 1803 was off, so Jiang Ning had to knock on the door. These three people had always slept deeply; what if they were bitten by rats in their sleep?
This wasn’t a joke; in her past life, many survivors had been bitten by red eyed mouse. With many deaths, the bubonic plague broke out.
It had to be admitted that since Coke joined the 18th floor, it was always the first to detect and warn of any disturbance.
Over time, everyone’s defense lowered, and the 18th floor could live so comfortably and peacefully.
As soon as the door of 1803 opened, Coke dashed in, causing a commotion in the dark, knocking over bottles and jars on the table, almost scaring Lu Yu into hugging his wife.
Turning on the light, it then bit another red eyed mouse to death.
Zhang Chao was shocked, “Where did such a big mouse come from, with red eyes?”
No one gave him an answer.
Even cockroaches were as thick as two fingers; not to mention red eyed mouse.
Coke was proud and majestic. It patrolled around and marked its own territory with urine.
The three people’s pupils trembled subconsciously, looking at Jiang Ning.
Jiang Ning rubbed her nose and awkwardly explained, “Red eyed mouse fear dogs, and Coke is marking the territory to protect you.”
A dog marking its territory? They never heard of it.
Although it was stinky, it was better than being invaded by red eyed mouse.
There is no shame in smelling dog urine.
Not only was it not embarrassing, but they also praised Coke one after another, “Coke, you’re amazing, pee a bit more.”
Coke grinned; it could get praised for peeing anywhere? Who else could do that!
Leaving 1803, Coke didn’t rush home but stood at the stairwell door.
Jiang Ning pondered, “Do you want to go to Grandma Zhong’s house?”
The two had stayed at Grandma Zhong’s house and had eaten her food; Coke probably wanted to repay her kindness.
Coke was still the same kind dog; its fierceness was just a protective armor.
So, Jiang Ning opened the triple-locked door and knocked on Grandma Zhong’s door…
