Chapter 60: Selling Clothes to Raise Money
No one knew what exactly Sun Yian had said, but that evening someone came over. However, Jiang Yuan didn’t open the door.
There was no electricity now, and it was pitch-black outside.
She wasn’t stupid—going out at night when the other party’s intentions were unknown? No way.
The next day, the temperature dropped even further. When she woke up in the morning, the indoor temperature was only minus five degrees Celsius.
She wasn’t afraid, though—not only did they still have heating equipment at home, but their hometown often dropped to -20 or -30°C at night in winter.
During the coldest period, even daytime temperatures would stay around -10°C.
When she was young, she would still run outside and play in that kind of weather.
That was her, though—others didn’t necessarily feel the same. Early in the morning, before breakfast was even finished, many people showed up.
“What are you all doing here?”
“Miss, we heard from Mr. Sun, the building manager. We came to buy clothes.”
It was 1602—the same person who had previously bought drinks from her.
He was shivering from the cold, nose red and rubbing his hands together.
He didn’t have the same vitality as before—he looked weak and dispirited.
“Is that so? Then take a look, see which ones you like.”
Jiang Yuan perked up at the words and pulled over the floor-standing clothing racks she had placed in the hallway.
They had wheels at the bottom, so they were easy to move.
“Look, these are all women’s clothes. Are you okay with that?”
“Yes, women’s clothes are fine too. Do you have anything for kids?”
“I do. Come in and have a look.”
She was about to open the door and let 1602 in.
Suddenly, a hand pressed down on hers—Jiang Yuan jumped in shock.
It was a hand with well-defined joints and the rough texture of calluses.
She looked up—of course, it was Song Yi.
He looked back at her and shook his head slightly.
Jiang Yuan immediately understood—he didn’t want her to open the door.
“Which one do you like? I’ll get it for you.”
1602 thought he’d be allowed in, but clearly that wasn’t happening.
“That black one—do you have a large size? And that purple women’s jacket too. Let me take a look at both.”
“Sure.”
Jiang Yuan started doing business. She had come from a sales background—selling things came naturally to her.
Besides, it wasn’t like the customers were picking between vendors—she was the only one selling anything at all.
“Song Yi, go back inside. I can handle this.”
“Okay.”
He had come out after hearing the commotion, but Jiang Yuan was a tough one. Since she said she could handle it, he trusted her.
With man and dog gone, Jiang Yuan focused on her sales.
She had interacted with 1602 before—he seemed okay, at least so far.
“How old is your kid? What size?”
“About 130.”
“Wait a second…”
Jiang Yuan turned to dig through her stock in that size.
After two minutes, she pulled out a short, hooded down jacket in size 130, along with a set of size 140 coral fleece pajamas.
“Take a look at these two.”
The man wasn’t picky. As long as the sizes looked right, he was satisfied.
“How much?”
“Fifty thousand.”
“What?! That expensive?”
“Good lord, that’s robbery!”
That came from a middle-aged woman and an old lady—both with sharp, mean expressions.
She suspected they might be mother and daughter.
There were also a man and two women nearby who said nothing.
Jiang Yuan wasn’t one to tolerate nonsense—this was the apocalypse. Who was better than who?
The one with resources was king. If you didn’t like it, too bad.
“If you’re here to argue, get lost. This is mink! Never slaughtered a pig but sure know what pig sh*t smells like!”
Seeing her temper, 1602 quickly stepped in to smooth things over.
“Miss, don’t be angry. Fifty thousand is fine—I happen to have that much.”
He really did take out the money. It had been tucked close to his body, hidden under thick clothes—no wonder no one noticed before.
“Alright.”
Jiang Yuan accepted the money with a cold face, her mood finally improving.
She hadn’t expected anyone in this building to keep so much cash at home.
Apparently, her worldview had been too narrow.
“Hold on…”
She turned and fetched two more sets of autumn pajamas in size 130.
Though not thick, they were long-sleeved and long-pants—good as a base layer for warmth.
“Take these two with you, too.”
“Thank you, really… thank you so much.”
1602 left, profusely grateful. The rest of the group looked anxious as they waited.
“What do you want?”
Jiang Yuan pointed at a girl next to them, in her twenties. She had layered on multiple pieces of clothing, probably because she didn’t own any thick winter wear.
Likely a renter who hadn’t had time to shop before the disaster.
“Miss, I only have 2,000 yuan. Can I get anything?”
“Give me the money.”
Jiang Yuan felt abnormally commanding now—and the girl didn’t dare question her.
“Hey, what if you don’t give her anything after taking the money?”
“Yeah! You can’t trust people like this…”
The old lady looked on in disgust. To her, paying tens of thousands for clothes was ridiculous.
Jiang Yuan tilted her head at the girl. “Your choice.”
“I want to buy!”
The girl trembled as she handed over the money with both hands—polite, at least.
Jiang Yuan took it and dug around, finally giving her a three-layer padded pajama set and two pairs of towel socks.
“Thank you!”
The girl hadn’t expected her money would get her anything. Now, she was genuinely grateful.
Prices were soaring—many people couldn’t buy even with money.
“What do you want?”
Jiang Yuan pointed at the man nearby—early 30s, well-kept, seemed vaguely familiar though she hadn’t spoken to him before.
“I want clothes for my kid. Here’s the money.”
He handed over 5,000 yuan obediently.
Su Qing sighed—at this rate, how long until she had enough to cover one hour’s worth of time?
“What size?”
“90 or 100, either’s fine…”
“Don’t have anything that small. I’ll get a 110.”
“Okay.”
She rummaged for a while and pulled out a size 110 cotton-padded coat and two sets of coral fleece pajamas.
Kids shouldn’t be cold. After all, Xiao Nuan had frozen to death in her previous life—she couldn’t let that happen again.
“Thank you…”
Three pieces of clothing—not bad at all. Worth every bit of the 5,000 yuan.
The man, holding the clothes, suddenly reached into his pocket and found a bar of chocolate.
His face changed instantly, and he quickly left.
Jiang Yuan remained calm, as if nothing had happened.
“There’s no one else now. Hand me that black one—I want to take a look.”
The old lady barked her command with authority, voice loud and clear.
“Get lost.”
“What?”
She was stunned and asked again.
“I said get lost. I’m not selling to some bitter old hag like you.”
“Who are you calling names? I’m doing you a favor buying your stuff. Who do you think you are?!”
Jiang Yuan slowly lowered her head, pretending to dig through a bag.
“I’ll give you one last chance. Leave now.”
She spoke while aiming her water gun at the railing.
“You wouldn’t dare…”
