Chapter 25 It’s all because of you that Chenchen got sick!!
Fu Jingchuan’s deep eyes darkened dangerously. He looked down at Jiang Wan’s two slender, fair arms exposed to the air, his throat moving with a subtle gulp. Then he raised a strong arm and gently pulled her into his embrace.
“Da Cheng,” he said in a deep voice, “go to my office and bring back a coat.”
“…” Comrade Da Cheng was still in a daze.
“Da Cheng!” Fu Jingchuan’s tone grew firmer.
“Here!!” Li Baocheng jolted, snapping his heels together with a loud smack and saluted sharply.
Fu Jingchuan frowned slightly, a touch of helplessness in his expression. “Go to my office and bring my coat.”
“For your sister-in-law to wear.”
“…Yes, sir!!” Comrade Da Cheng grabbed the flashlight and sprinted off toward the base, heart pounding in his chest. His face was lit with excitement as he thought: Sister-in-law—it’s really her!
Oh my goodness, the others weren’t exaggerating at all! The little sister-in-law from Nancheng really does look like a fairy! He couldn’t help but marvel: How does she get her skin so fair?!
And damn, their company commander sure got jealous fast! All he did was look a second too long, and the commander looked at him like he wanted to slice him in half!
But really, if he were lucky enough to marry such a beautiful wife, Da Cheng thought, he wouldn’t let anyone look either! He’d probably want to lock her up at home and spoil her all day long—who knows what could happen if someone tried to steal her away?!
Fu Jingchuan glanced at the unconscious Fu Chen, then lifted him into his arms.
“Come on, let’s get to the affiliated hospital. It’s right next door,” he said.
His heart was full of worry for Fu Chen, but his gaze still kept drifting uncontrollably to Jiang Wan. He wished that jacket could grow legs and run to them already. He didn’t want anyone seeing her like this…
But they needed to go—standing here was no use. He could borrow a phone at the hospital and have Da Cheng send the coat there.
With Fu Chen in his arms, Fu Jingchuan began walking.
“It’s just around the corner.”
Jiang Wan, anxious and obedient, followed him without hesitation.
Behind them, Yuan Meilin stood dumbfounded for a long moment, unable to react. It wasn’t until Fu Jingchuan and Jiang Wan were far ahead that she finally stomped her foot in frustration and ran after them:
“Jingchuan-ge! Jingchuan-ge! Wait for me!!”
At the affiliated hospital, Fu Jingchuan carried Fu Chen straight to the director’s office.
Director Wang Ya, a woman in her 40s, was familiar with him.
The moment he entered, Fu Jingchuan laid Fu Chen on the hospital bed and politely asked Director Wang if he could borrow the phone. He called his office and happened to catch Li Baocheng just arriving.
He quickly told him they were at the affiliated hospital and to bring the coat over. Then he hung up.
Director Wang, wearing glasses perched on her nose, frowned the moment she saw the flushed face of Fu Chen. “Oh dear, Captain Fu, isn’t this the boy you adopted?”
“This child is burning up!”
She walked over and touched the boy’s forehead, then turned slightly—and noticed a young female comrade standing near the door.
Director Wang had seen many interns over the years, but never had she seen one so soft and stunning. Her skin looked like it had been soaked in milk, almost shockingly fair. Clearly a pampered city girl, not a rural one.
She was stunned for a good moment before reacting. “Ah! Captain Fu! Is this the young lady those new recruits were talking about—the one you just married?”
“Oh my! This comrade is so beautiful, she gave me quite a fright!”
Jiang Wan walked gracefully into the room, offering a polite nod and a faint smile. “Hello, I’m Jiang Wan.”
“Nice to meet you, nice to meet you,” said Director Wang. “I’m Wang Ya, head of internal medicine here.”
But knowing what was important, she took a thermometer and tucked it under Fu Chen’s armpit first.
Jiang Wan, her elegant brows furrowed in worry, asked anxiously, “Director Wang, is he okay? He was fine earlier today—running and jumping around. But as soon as the sun set, he started burning up!”
Her clear apricot eyes were filled with concern.
Standing beside her, Fu Jingchuan took it all in. He pursed his lips, a thoughtful look in his eyes.
This little woman clearly cared for Fu Chen—not pretending at all. And earlier today, she hadn’t shown the slightest dislike toward the two kids. She even went out into the fields to find him.
Plus… Sister Yulan from Captain Gao’s family seemed to like her a lot. The two had even chatted together.
Fu Jingchuan lowered his long lashes silently, a warmth beginning to grow in his heart.
It seemed Jiang Wan really wanted to build a life with him. She didn’t mind the children, nor did she complain about the poverty of rural life.
“Jingchuan-ge!!” Yuan Meilin came barging into the office, huffing and puffing. Her thick figure was wrapped in a bright pink dress, and her makeup was completely smeared—so much so that Director Wang was startled and nearly lost her footing.
“Goodness! And this comrade is…?”
“…Yuan Meilin, why haven’t you gone home yet?” Fu Jingchuan’s brows knitted tightly, his tone tinged with displeasure.
What exactly was Yuan Meilin trying to do? Couldn’t she see he was here taking care of a sick child?
But to his surprise, Yuan Meilin strode right over to Jiang Wan. She glanced at Fu Chen lying on the bed and suddenly shoved Jiang Wan hard, yelling angrily:
“Jiang Wan! You wicked woman!!”
“It’s all your fault Fu Chen got sick!!”
“Yuan Meilin!!” Fu Jingchuan’s eyes flared with icy rage when he saw soft, delicate Jiang Wan suddenly shoved by the sturdy Yuan Meilin.
He immediately stepped forward and blocked Jiang Wan with his broad frame. “Yuan Meilin, why did you lay a hand on my wife?!”
His muscles tensed up, and his jaw clenched tightly.
Jiang Wan froze, instinctively touching her arm where Yuan Meilin had struck her. Her long lashes fluttered as she looked up—only to see the tall, commanding figure of the man shielding her in front.
His whole presence was like a wall, standing firm and unwavering.
She curled her lips into a smile, her eyes curving into gentle crescents.
Hmm… why did he suddenly give off a bit of a loyal guard dog vibe?
“Jingchuan-ge!! Why are you still defending her?!” Yuan Meilin cried. “These past few years, I’ve helped my mom raise Fu Chen and he’s never gotten sick! Now Jiang Wan shows up, and within two days the child is burning with fever!”
“If she didn’t cause this, then who did?!?!”
