Chapter 8: Hero to the Rescue!
Ning Wanwan shook her head at those words, thinking to herself that Zhou Hongchang truly had done more harm than good.
“Big sis, what you have is just neurogenic headache, not some terminal illness. While it might not be completely curable, it’s totally manageable to control the frequency of the episodes.”
The crowd immediately turned their attention to Zhou Hongchang, pointing fingers and gossiping. Some even spat on the ground in disdain at him.
Ning Wanwan raised her delicate eyebrows slightly. Seeing Zhou Hongchang’s face grow darker by the second, she knew this quack was about to cause trouble, so she quickly tugged at Sister Xu and Xiao Ling.
“Big sis, Xiao Ling, let’s get going. We can talk on the way. My place is nearby — we can chat more comfortably there.”
The mother and daughter quickly stood up and followed Ning Wanwan out of the market.
“Hold it right there!” Zhou Hongchang’s furious voice suddenly rang out from behind.
“You ruin my livelihood and expect to just walk away? There’s no such logic in this world!”
Face flushed with rage, his heavyset body stormed toward the three of them.
The butcher nearby spoke up in a gruff voice, “Doctor Zhou, what’s the meaning of this? Can’t stand that someone else actually has real medical skills?”
“Exactly! Just because this miracle doctor girl is better than you doesn’t mean you get to act like this. What are you planning to do in broad daylight?”
“We’ve all seen how many times that woman went to your clinic. Everything she said is the truth. You’re a grown man — why are you throwing a tantrum?”
Humiliated and enraged, Zhou Hongchang raised his large hand, intending to grab at Ning Wanwan — but before he could even touch her sleeve, his wrist was caught by a larger, stronger hand.
He Yunshen’s eyes were cold and sharp. “Comrade, bullying a woman doesn’t exactly scream honor.”
He had actually arrived while Ning Wanwan was still treating Xu Cuihua but had held back, wanting to observe without interrupting.
What he witnessed only deepened the confusion in his eyes.
The Fang family may be a medical family, but Ning Wanwan had always been known as an idle rich girl, notorious throughout the elite circles of Jing City.
Yet the acupuncture skills she just displayed were fluid and flawless — truly awe-inspiring.
Even his father-in-law, Fang Shaocheng, would probably be stunned if he saw this.
Just what exactly had happened to her…?
He was finding himself more and more intrigued by her.
Ning Wanwan had been a little nervous at first, but upon seeing He Yunshen, her anxiety finally eased.
Otherwise, as a paralyzed beauty, she’d have been helpless against that shameless dog of a man.
He Yunshen’s military uniform alone was enough to command authority. With those gleaming gold epaulettes on his shoulders, Zhou Hongchang immediately backed down.
Crap — he had kicked an iron wall. That was the regimental commander!
“Ow! Ow! Have mercy, Comrade Commander! I was just trying to talk some sense into this ignorant woman. I didn’t mean to hit her — she ruined my business, that’s all…”
The more Zhou Hongchang spoke, the more pitiful he tried to sound, attempting to defend himself.
He Yunshen ground his molars slightly, the corner of his mouth curling into a half-smile as he slowly repeated his words.
“‘Ignorant woman’? ‘Ruined your business’?”
“Xiao Song, call the local industrial and commercial bureau and the police station. Report today’s events exactly as they happened. And run a thorough background check on this Doctor Zhou.”
“I’m taking my wife home. You stay here and handle the aftermath.”
“Yes, Commander!” the young orderly named Xiao Song gave a crisp salute and quickly ran to the other end of the market to make the calls.
As soon as he said it, it was like a thunderclap in broad daylight — the watching vendors were instantly stunned.
Holy crap. That was the commander’s wife?!
Zhou Hongchang was done for.
He Yunshen pushed Ning Wanwan’s wheelchair toward the market exit, with Xu Cuihua and her daughter hesitantly trailing behind.
Zhou Hongchang, now drenched in sweat, collapsed onto the ground, not daring to flee. With an officer investigating him, there’d be no escape — not even to the ends of the earth.
After all, he was nothing more than a backwater barefoot doctor who had read a few old family medical books and came out pretending to be an expert. He couldn’t cure anyone, but at least didn’t kill anyone either.
There were so few real doctors in this era that he was able to exploit the gap and make a fortune.
But now, he’d offended someone he definitely shouldn’t have. His good days were over.
At the roadside, He Yunshen stopped next to a military jeep. He opened the door and, with one strong arm, lifted Ning Wanwan into the passenger seat.
Xu Cuihua and her daughter stood awkwardly nearby, heads lowered in discomfort.
Ning Wanwan’s cheeks were flushed. This was the first time she had been carried bridal-style in front of so many people. She quickly masked her embarrassment and waved to them.
“Sister Xu, Xiao Ling, hop in — I still have a prescription to give you.”
Ning Wanwan knew her cover was basically blown, so she decided not to dwell on it. She sat gracefully in the jeep, letting He Yunshen eye her curiously.
He Yunshen wasn’t some magical savior — his timing was too perfect. That meant he’d been there for a while.
He was like a well-hidden predator, quietly observing from a shadowy corner, only stepping in when necessary.
He started the car, his gaze drifting now and then toward Ning Wanwan’s fair profile.
The atmosphere in the vehicle was a little awkward. Ning Wanwan raised an eyebrow slightly — if he didn’t move, she wouldn’t either.
In the backseat, Xu Cuihua and her daughter looked around curiously. It was their first time in a military vehicle.
“Um… thank you, Madam Commander. We really didn’t know who you were,” Xu Cuihua said awkwardly.
Ning Wanwan smiled faintly. “Sister, just call me Wanwan. It was nothing, really.”
Little Xiao Ling stole a few glances at He Yunshen, blushing, then mustered her courage to say, “Miracle doctor sis, you’re so pretty. You and the commander look so good together!”
He Yunshen raised an eyebrow at that and glanced at her through the rearview mirror.
Ning Wanwan just laughed awkwardly.
Ning Wanwan (thinking): Xiao Ling, you might need your eyes checked…
Sensing the awkward tension, Xu Cuihua quickly changed the subject, telling them about their family background.
Turned out Xu Cuihua was the widow of a martyr. Her husband, Guo Baoguo, had served on the southwest border and heroically died in a large-scale counterattack a few years ago.
Since then, life had been tough. The military’s compensation was limited, and without a steady income, they struggled to get by.
Xu Cuihua survived doing small bits of needlework, while Guo Xiaoling had been in high school but dropped out six months ago because they couldn’t afford the tuition.
He Yunshen was a skilled driver, navigating the bumpy dirt road smoothly. But he was lost in thought, full of questions, and a bit distracted.
As they neared his courtyard gate, Ning Wanwan noticed the man zoning out and gave him a sideways glance, then coughed softly.
He Yunshen snapped back to reality — and suddenly slammed on the brakes.
Ning Wanwan (thinking): He Yunshen, what the actual hell?!
The women in the back were fine, but Ning Wanwan in the front took the full brunt of it.
She was slammed forward, her face smushed against the windshield, completely distorted.
Even though she had braced her hands against the glass, her nose and forehead ached from the impact.
He Yunshen panicked, jumping out of the car and hurriedly lifting her out.
“I’m sorry! I… I…”
