The room was arranged, and the two of them, along with the dog, had lunch in the space, while Doudou continued to sleep in the room.
Knowing that time in the space was precious, Huo Yishen didn’t rest and helped Jiang Ning harvest the soybeans in the black soil garden.
The soybeans were not yet ripe, still in the edamame stage, with both the leaves and beans a lush green.
Thinking about the long era of apocalypse ahead, Jiang Ning decided to make all of them into braised edamame, to nibble on duck necks and edamame to pass the time when bored.
The dog wouldn’t eat dog food for free; Coke imitated them, biting the soybean seedlings and pulling them out. The speed was fast, but the throwing was messy.
Truly… so competitive in life!
Picking edamame, washing them, seasoning them with braised sauce, and boiling them in a pot.
Jiang Ning taught Huo Yishen, then went back to her room to sleep.
She woke up around five o’clock, and just when she was about to turn over, she found a hand on her waist.
Huo Yishen was lying beside her, asleep.
Had she been sleeping so deeply? She didn’t even notice him coming in.
Was it because she was too relaxed, or was he just more skilled?
Jiang Ning poked him, “Stop pretending; I know you’re awake.”
Huo Yishen opened his eyes but hugged her tighter.
The two of them were close together, eye to eye, and she could feel his warm breath against her skin.
Jiang Ning’s mind went blank, and her eyes involuntarily looked away.
Huo Yishen suddenly kissed her. Jiang Ning was stunned for a moment, feeling somewhat out of control, but she didn’t push him away.
Just like this… They’re both in tune with each other.
He didn’t go any further, holding her for a long time before breathing steadily. “Anning, do you think the Civil Affairs Bureau is still open?”
Jiang Ning thought for a moment, “It probably isn’t.”
“After the natural disaster passes, we’ll get the paperwork done.”
Jiang Ning threw a pillow at him. “Who said I want to marry you? Dream on.”
Huo Yishen looked her straight in the eyes and said, “But I want to take care of you. Aren’t you willing to give me this chance?”
“Woof, woof, woof!”
Outside, the dog was barking, calling for the trainer to start training.
Huo Yishen interrupted in his confession, “…”
Jiang Ning lay on the bed, laughing until her stomach hurt. “Go, Coke is calling you.”
Huo Yishen was very patient with the dog, starting with back-and-forth running for warm-up, then spinning, jumping, crawling…
Finally, the big dog lay on the grass, tongue out, unable to get up.
The trainer squatted down to encourage it: “Good dog, we’ll continue tomorrow.”
After dinner around seven o’clock, Huo Yishen took the initiative. “Anning, shall we go out?”
Jiang Ning had wanted to suggest this earlier; it wasn’t easy to save some time, and spending so much of it at once was heartbreaking.
At this hour, it was already dark outside and not easily noticed by others.
Doudou was carried down, and the seatbelt was fastened again.
Jiang Ning touched her face, feeling sorry for the child, but everything is for peace and harmony.
After getting ready, they stepped out of the space.
When the escape pod was retracted into the space, it was pushed out by the waves for more than ten meters, so it didn’t land on the villa’s rooftop. Fortunately, it was in a flat area; otherwise, rolling all the way down from the mountaintop, they would probably vomit everything out.
Good news: the tsunami has receded.
However, they still hear a roaring sound occasionally coming from the distance.
It seemed to have receded, but not completely.
Jiang Ning took out the night vision binoculars. The tsunami had destroyed everything; there was no light in the sea, and nothing could be seen beyond.
She already looked far away.
It was estimated that it hadn’t receded to a safe distance yet.
Retrieving the escape pod into space, Jiang Ning was about to return to the villa with a flashlight when Coke suddenly looked alert, emitting a slight low growl from its mouth.
Huo Yishen frowned. “There’s someone in the villa.”
This wasn’t surprising; after all, there were so many people on the beach that it was normal for survivors to live.
As for whether they were humans or ghosts who survived, that was hard to say.
Huo Yishen wanted to go and check it out, handing Doudou over to the dog. “You guard Doudou here; wait for us to come back.”
The dog took on the task and stayed close by to guard Doudou.
The two of them changed into bulletproof vests and stealthily approached the villa in the darkness.
Faintly, there was a flickering of fire.
Having lived here for a month, Jiang Ning was familiar with the place and effortlessly sneaked in. She saw the villa’s gate wide open, with a fire illuminating the area. There were seventeen or eighteen people, some sitting, some standing, all dressed in ragged clothes with dark skin. Their eyes were fixed on a person lying unconscious on the ground.
From their appearance, they seemed to be the lowest level of refugees.
The person unconscious on the ground was wearing camouflage attire and appeared to be a soldier.
Jiang Ning looked closely and felt like she recognized him from somewhere.
Having been by the seaside for a month, she rarely interacted with soldiers. The only time was…
It turned out to be the soldier who distributed relief supplies.
He was seriously injured, his clothes stained with blood, especially the bandage on his thigh, which was soaked in blood.
Yes, he was still bleeding; his face was getting pale.
Such a severe injury from the tsunami meant almost certain death.
Clearly, the people around me had noticed, their faces showing a mix of confusion and concern.
Having survived the apocalypse for three years, Jiang Ning knew exactly what those expressions meant.
At the same time, Huo Yishen beside her seemed unusual.
Jiang Ning gently held his hand, feeling his body cold and stiff, his whole being emanating an unmistakable aura of killing intent. He was completely different from usual.
“I’ll go first.”
A hoarse voice sounded as a man pulled out a rusty knife from his pocket. “Each of you gets one knife. No exceptions.”
The children nearby looked fearful, one of them stammering, “But… the uncle saved us.”
The man laughed, revealing yellow teeth. “Kid, are you hungry?”
The child shrank back, unable to say anything more, and retreated into the crowd.
The others remained silent, too.
The man tightened his grip on the knife and stepped forward.
The flickering fire cast eerie shadows, illuminating the man’s face and making him appear like a menacing demon.
Jiang Ning was armed with a submachine gun and walked in boldly. “Wow, what a lively scene.”
The people were startled and turned to look at her.
So beautiful, they couldn’t remember the last time they saw such a clean, fair, and beautiful woman.
The man’s eyes widened instantly.
But upon seeing the submachine gun in her hand, he jumped in fright.
Before he could speak, a tall, stern man walked in; he’s also holding a gun.
Seeing the two standing side by side, the man quickly hid the knife, his smile turning gentle yet bitter. “Kind sir, miss, our home was ravaged by the tsunami, and the hero who saved us is injured. Do you have any food and medicine?”
Jiang Ning couldn’t be bothered with their nonsense. “I’ll give you two options: one, leave as far as you can; two, I’ll kill all of you.”
“No, miss…”
Huo Yishen raised his hand and fired a shot, accurately piercing through the man’s ear.
The man screamed, clutching his bleeding ear.
Jiang Ning scanned the crowd. “I have a bad temper and don’t like repeating myself.”
Sensing the hostility in the gaze of the pair, the bystanders felt a mix of resentment and fear of harm and reluctantly departed, one by one.
But someone had second thoughts. “Wait, we can’t abandon the hero.”
Several people realized and ran back to help the soldier lying unconscious on the ground.
Jiang Ning aimed the submachine gun at his head. “How about I shoot you and let them take you away?”
The man trembled in fear, finally giving up his last thought, and left like a frightened bird or beast.
Jiang Ning approached and found the soldier unconscious, battling a high fever, with numerous wounds and cuts covering his body.
She gazed at him, struggling with hesitation, before finally retrieving the water, antibiotics, and medical supplies from her space.
If it were someone else, Jiang Ning might not have extended a helping hand.
But looking at him, unconscious, she couldn’t help but think of Huo Yishen from her past life…
