Chapter 3
Su Nian sat down on the sofa too and crossed her legs.
“What’s a girl supposed to act like? Like Su Yue seducing her brother-in-law and sleeping with him?”
Su Daqiang almost choked on his breath—what kind of outrageous words were these?
“Nian Nian!”
Seeing Su Daqiang’s stern face, Su Nian suddenly burst into tears and collapsed into his arms, sobbing.
“Dad, you don’t know how pitiful I’ve been! That day… that day, Su Yue and Fu Mingjun told me to go to his house to meet him. I thought it was odd, but I was afraid it might be something important, so I still went.
But what I saw… I saw Su Yue and Fu Mingjun in bed together, naked… I can’t even say it aloud!
And that’s not even the worst part—they actually want my job now! They want me to give up my position to Su Yue, they want me to go to the countryside in her place. How shameless can they be… sob sob sob…”
Now Su Daqiang was truly angry.
“Yao Xiaojun!
You said you’d help me take care of my daughter and this family—is this how you do it? Fu Mingjun was the fiancé my ex-wife Wen Wan arranged for Su Nian!
And you actually let Su Yue… go and do that? If word of this got out, how would I even face anyone?”
Yao Xiaojun was momentarily stunned. Ever since marrying Su Daqiang, their relationship had been smooth, never even a raised voice. And now he was yelling at her—for this brat?
“Daqiang, how can you say that… I’ve sacrificed so much for this family all these years. Maybe I haven’t achieved much, but I’ve worked hard! You know what kind of girl Yueyue is—she’d never do something like that. There must be a misunderstanding here.”
Su Daqiang didn’t say a word, face dark with rage.
Su Nian looked at her father’s trembling hands, and for once, felt like maybe he wasn’t completely heartless.
“Dad, since Fu Mingjun and Su Yue are so deeply in love, then as the older sister, I’ll just let them be. It’s just a man, right? If I lose this one, maybe the next will be better!
But me… I don’t want to be sent to the countryside. Life out there is too hard. I heard from the old lady next door that once you go, you never come back.”
Su Yue was furious by now and couldn’t be bothered to keep secrets. Su Nian had clearly promised not to tell anyone—what was she doing now, digging up the past?
“It’s too late. My mom already submitted your name. You’re going whether you like it or not.”
Su Nian was shocked. She hadn’t expected them to go this far. The original Su Nian had obediently agreed to go to the countryside—but even if she refused now, they still planned to force her?
“Dad! You heard her. This is your wonderful wife you married!
I don’t care, you have to make this right! This is serious! Do you know what time it is? Who in their right mind would still voluntarily sign up to go to the countryside? If this isn’t bullying me just because I’m a stepdaughter, then what is?”
Su Daqiang was both shocked and deeply disappointed.
Su Nian was right. It was the late 1970s—who was still being sent to the countryside? This was practically ruining her future. And she already had a job—she didn’t even need to go!
“Bring me the household registration book and the passbook!”
Su Daqiang’s voice was cold and firm. Yao Xiaojun didn’t dare say a word and silently went to fetch them from the bedroom.
When he received them, Su Daqiang handed them straight to Su Nian. “Nian Nian, here you go. Dad… since your name is already submitted, there’s not much I can do. You decide how to handle it.”
As he reached the bedroom door, Su Daqiang shouted angrily:
“Everyone go pack your things! We’re moving out first thing in the morning. What a disgrace!”
In this house, as the only one with a paying job, Su Daqiang still held real authority—even if he liked to pretend otherwise most of the time, acting like he didn’t see or hear anything.
And here he was, running away again.
Still, the moment he gave the order, the rest of the people in the living room obediently went to pack their things.
Meanwhile, Su Nian sat on the sofa, staring blankly at the household registration book in her hands. Since the scumbag and homewrecker were so in love, let them be bound together for life.
Just because they got married didn’t mean they could escape being sent down. The original Su Nian’s suffering—they’d have to taste it too. Let’s see if their “true love” survives hardship in the countryside!
The reason Su Nian was doing this was to block Su Yue’s way forward completely.
In the novel, the male lead wasn’t Fu Mingjun. Su Nian had only used him—she’d never truly planned to marry him.
Later, she would meet the actual male lead, Han Zheng, and begin a beautiful new chapter in life. So now was the perfect time to tie Su Yue down in marriage. Once things changed, who knew if Han Zheng would still fall for Su Yue, that so-called peerless “white lotus”?
But the moment she opened the passbook, Su Nian’s expression darkened.
In the past two years, over 3,000 yuan had been withdrawn, bit by bit. What had it all been spent on?
“Yao Xiaojun, I suggest you return that 3,000 yuan to me immediately. Otherwise, none of us will have any peace. I can overlook the big-ticket items bought for the house, but the rest? Not negotiable.”
Most of the big purchases had been made before the new year, and they were all still in the house—Su Nian could let those go, since technically they were hers anyway.
But the money in the passbook had been in Yao Xiaojun’s hands for the last couple years. If she withdrew the funds, they definitely went into her own pocket. Su Nian was determined to get every cent back.
Su Daqiang wasn’t stupid—he glared at Yao Xiaojun furiously from the bedroom.
“You took money from the passbook behind my back? I told you from the start—that money was what Wen Wan left for Nian Nian. You’ve got some nerve.”
Yao Xiaojun’s face turned pale, but she still tried to explain carefully.
“When we got married, didn’t you promise to give my family 1,000 yuan? I just… I just sent it to my mother. My younger brother’s wedding cost 500.
And when your mother passed, we spent 500 on the funeral.
We bought a new bicycle for the house, and new wristwatches for Su Gang and Su Yue—this money doesn’t go far, you know!”
As she listed things off on her fingers, Su Daqiang hung his head lower and lower. All those expenses had gone through him, but he didn’t realize it added up to over 3,000 yuan.
He hadn’t noticed Su Nian was already standing at the doorway.
“Dad, you really think that’s okay?” she asked, arms crossed, staring coldly at him.
Su Daqiang dazedly nodded.
Seeing that, Yao Xiaojun got bolder too. “Nian Nian, don’t be so petty. Are you really going to yell at your dad over a little bit of money?
Besides, didn’t we leave all the big stuff in the house for you? What more do you want?”
Su Nian was seething. Her cheap dad was truly an idiot!
“A little bit of money? You’re a stay-at-home woman who doesn’t even work—do you even know how much 3,000 yuan is worth right now? My dad earns just over 200 yuan a month—and he’s a department head!
An average worker would have to save for 10 years to earn 3,000 yuan—and you call that little?
Back in the old days, someone like you would just be a concubine. And my dad used my mom’s money to marry you—don’t you think that’s disgusting? Especially when he publicly claimed to have cut ties with her.
If anyone found out he was still spending her money, wouldn’t that be interesting?
Since all the major expenses were paid with my mom’s money, what happened to my dad’s wages then? Over 200 yuan a month—where did it all go? Even feeding a whole family doesn’t cost that much, does it?”
