While eating dumplings just now, Xu Suining quickly reviewed the original host’s memories once again. Her mother family was riddled with problems and completely unreliable.
So she could only try to get along with Huo Qingshan and focus on getting through the next two years safely.
Seeing the distrust in Huo Qingshan’s eyes, she quickly raised her hand. “I didn’t lie to you. I really tried hard just now, but I still can’t remember how I ended up in the hospital.”
“Actually, I was already awake earlier and heard your conversation with the doctor. You don’t want this child, do you? But I do. The doctor said that if I terminate this pregnancy, I might never be able to have children again.”
“If… if you really hate me that much, we can wait until after I give birth to get divorced.”
As she spoke, Xu Suining’s eyes drooped slightly, looking pitiful and humble. The corners of her eyes were tinged with red.
Huo Qingshan was stunned by Xu Suining’s reversal. She had always insisted on not keeping the child and had wanted a divorce from the start.
Why was she suddenly willing now? Could she really have lost her memory?
He didn’t have much emotional attachment to Xu Suining. It was more about responsibility. When he found out she was pregnant, he thought that since the child was already there, he should treat her well, have the baby, and at least have a complete family.
But Xu Suining’s determination to get rid of the child and run away, even at the risk of danger, had forced him to reconsider whether this child should have even come into the world.
He had already decided to let her go—then she lost her memory.
Huo Qingshan stared at Xu Suining in silence for a long time.
Just as Xu Suining was starting to feel guilty and tried to avert her gaze, he finally spoke slowly, “This marriage isn’t what you wanted, and you didn’t want the child either. Are you sure you won’t regret it once your memory returns?”
Xu Suining nodded, a bit eager. “I won’t, I really won’t. I want this child. I like children.”
She was terrified that Huo Qingshan might refuse and resent her for eloping and cheating.
Huo Qingshan fell silent again. “I hope you don’t regret it.”
Xu Suining hadn’t expected him to agree so easily. She couldn’t help but smile, her lips curving and eyes lighting up with joy. “I won’t.”
Huo Qingshan was slightly dazed by her smile. In the six months since they got married, Xu Suining had never once smiled. There was always a lingering sorrow in her eyes, and her lips were perpetually downturned. She never greeted anyone.
She had been cloaked in a constant gloom.
But now, with that one smile, her eyes sparkled and her lips lifted. Her whole being suddenly seemed full of life and vitality.
The hospital made Xu Suining feel unsafe, and now that Huo Qingshan had agreed, she quickly asked, “I’m already fine now, right? Can we go home?”
She needed to get out and learn more about this era so she could settle down and live a good life here.
Huo Qingshan didn’t really believe she had amnesia. He also knew what kind of situation Xu Suining would face if they divorced.
Her sudden shift in attitude was likely an attempt to avoid that fate and protect the man who had hurt her and run away.
His gaze swept across her belly, pressing down the emotions in his eyes. “I’ll go ask the doctor.”
Xu Suining immediately stood up. “I’ll go with you.”
Huo Qingshan glanced at her, said nothing, and turned around. Xu Suining hurried after him.
Walking beside Huo Qingshan, Xu Suining finally realized how tall he was. At 165 centimeters, she barely reached his shoulder.
Two rooms down from the ward was the doctor’s office.
There weren’t many patients. Dr. Chen, who had been reading a newspaper, stood up in surprise when he saw them enter. “Sister-in-law’s awake? Are you feeling unwell?”
Xu Suining shook her head. “No, just a bit of a headache. I can’t remember anything from before. When I try to think about it, my head starts to hurt.”
She frowned slightly, looking troubled.
Dr. Chen was a bit surprised. “You can’t remember? Sister-in-law, have a seat. Let me take a look.”
Xu Suining sat down obediently, fully cooperative as Dr. Chen took her pulse and checked her eyes.
After examining her, he gently felt the lump on the back of her head, then turned to Huo Qingshan. “Commander Huo, the swelling on the back of her head might be pressing on a nerve. That could be causing the temporary memory loss.”
Huo Qingshan looked at the cooperative Xu Suining with an unreadable expression. “Temporary? When will it come back?”
Dr. Chen couldn’t say for sure. “Once the blood from the bruise is naturally reabsorbed, her memory should return, as long as nothing goes wrong. But there are exceptions. After all, nerve damage can be irreversible.”
Huo Qingshan understood—there was a chance Xu Suining might never regain her memory.
He glanced at her. She had her head lowered, shoulders drooped, looking as though she were really upset.
He made a decision in his heart. He couldn’t abandon her in this state. He would wait until her memory returned to talk about divorce.
Xu Suining kept her head down because she was afraid the satisfaction in her eyes would give her away.
Dr. Chen added, “Commander Huo, her body is very weak. When she goes home, she’ll need extra nutrition.”
Despite the rumors flying around outside, Dr. Chen thought that since there was already a child, they might not end up divorcing after all.
When they left the doctor’s office, Xu Suining looked around happily.
With a doctor’s note confirming her amnesia, she could bluff her way through for quite some time.
She then noticed a full-length mirror on the wall beside the office. Two lines of red characters had been written on it with oil-based paint: Pay attention to military discipline and appearance. Maintain a tidy appearance.
Xu Suining stopped in front of the mirror and looked at herself. Her figure was slender like a willow, her face pale but still delicate and lovely.
Very pretty, but too thin.
Xu Suining was quite satisfied and leaned closer, but then was shocked to spot a few suspicious red marks on both sides of her pale neck.
Dark purplish spots, irregular in shape—like hickeys!
Could it be… those were left by the man the original host ran away with?
Xu Suining panicked. She’d been walking around with marks like that right in front of Huo Qingshan?
How had he tolerated it?
She touched the marks on her neck, horrified, and quickly turned around.
Huo Qingshan was already standing at the doorway of the ward, his face unreadable as he watched her, his figure backlit by the light.
Xu Suining grew even more flustered. She rubbed her neck awkwardly and forced a laugh. “What’s this on my neck? A rash?”
Huo Qingshan just gave her a long look before turning and walking into the room to tidy the bedding.
Xu Suining braced herself and followed. “Let me help.”
Huo Qingshan ignored her, bending down to straighten the bedding. His movements were efficient, and even the blankets seemed to obey him.
In no time, he had folded everything into neat, perfect squares.
Xu Suining stood off to the side, watching, though her mind was racing the entire time. She had to find a way to change this awkward situation.
Neither of them spoke, and the silence became a bit too much.
Just as Xu Suining was debating whether to break it, a girl suddenly rushed in. “Brother Huo, is your sister-in-law okay?”
The girl who burst in was tall and had two thick black braids hanging over her chest. She wore a white shirt, loose black pants, and cloth shoes with square toes and ties.
There was a healthy, unpretentious beauty about her.
As Xu Suining looked at the girl, she suddenly realized something even more terrifying…
