“Hm?” Jiang Zhi Ning looked at him in surprise, her face lighting up with a playful grin. “Turns out our Comrade Yuzhou is quite capable.”
Embarrassed by the teasing, Song Yuzhou cleared his throat awkwardly. “Let’s go.”
Though he was a bit flustered, he didn’t want Jiang Zhi Ning to overthink and feel upset.
His legs were long, and with one stride he was already ahead. But when he saw she hadn’t caught up, he slowed down.
Noticing his attentiveness, Jiang Zhi Ning happily followed alongside him.
Since it wasn’t often they came to Beicheng, Jiang Zhi Ning didn’t want to just head straight back. She wanted to buy some gifts for the Shen family as thanks for their hospitality these past few days.
Because Song Yuzhou couldn’t be away from the base for too long, getting the marriage certificate meant they would soon be heading to the military compound.
So before returning, Song Yuzhou bought some supplements and tobacco and alcohol for his in-laws, while Jiang Zhi Ning picked up some food items.
After putting the gifts in the car, the two of them casually strolled through the busy streets of Beicheng.
“It’s really lively here.” Jiang Zhi Ning looked around curiously at the shops, eyes full of wonder.
Song Yuzhou observed her with a bit of confusion. Judging by her reaction, it was like she was seeing all of this for the first time.
“Comrade Yuzhou, once we’re at the base, will we still get to go out like this?” she asked with concern.
Ever since she transmigrated into the book, Jiang Zhi Ning had wanted to live a more exciting life to make up for past regrets.
“You’re not a soldier. The army won’t interfere with what you want to do or where you want to go,” Song Yuzhou replied earnestly.
“Then… will you still be able to go out with me often?”
Song Yuzhou considered his words. “I’ll do my best to accompany you.”
“That’s enough, then,” Jiang Zhi Ning said with a soft laugh.
Watching her raise her eyebrows playfully, Song Yuzhou realized—she really loved to smile.
“Are those candied hawthorns they’re selling over there?” Jiang Zhi Ning’s eyes lit up. That was her favorite snack back in modern times.
Now seeing the authentic version being sold in person, she practically sparkled with excitement.
“I’ll go buy it,” Song Yuzhou said in his deep voice.
“Sure!” she replied cheerfully.
As Song Yuzhou walked toward the vendor selling the candied treats, he glanced back and saw Jiang Zhi Ning had already run off to a nearby stall selling sugar figurines.
Seeing this, Song Yuzhou smiled to himself.
Jiang Zhi Ning picked out a cute sugar figurine, paid for it, and was about to leave when she suddenly heard a voice that was both familiar and unfamiliar.
“Jiang Zhi Ning?”
She looked up to see Sheng Hao, surprised to find her there.
Standing beside him was Shen An’an.
Shen An’an really was the favored daughter of fate—even now she had another guy wrapped around her finger.
“Jiang Zhi Ning, what are you doing here?” Shen An’an asked provocatively, wrapping her hand around Sheng Hao’s arm.
She knew Jiang Zhi Ning had always liked Sheng Hao. With her chin raised, she wore the smug expression of a victor.
“Are you blind? Can’t you see what I’m doing?” Jiang Zhi Ning retorted coldly.
Shen An’an glared at her viciously, then pretended to smile. “Where did you go after leaving home? No matter what, the Jiang family raised you. Mom and Dad were really worried.”
Shen An’an’s eyes were full of smugness. She had finally snatched away everything that once belonged to Jiang Zhi Ning—she couldn’t be happier.
“Why would I report to you? Who do you think you are?” Jiang Zhi Ning licked her sugar figurine and smiled. “Seeing you two playing lovebirds… I didn’t expect the Sheng family to be picking up trash.”
“What do you mean by that, Jiang Zhi Ning?!”
“What else? Why would anyone want such garbage? I heard in Xinli Village, you were already messing around with someone named Huzi. Maybe you’ve got a Baozi or Gouzi lined up next,” Jiang Zhi Ning replied sweetly.
Hearing that, Sheng Hao yanked his arm away from Shen An’an in displeasure.
“Brother Sheng Hao, don’t listen to her nonsense! She’s just jealous and trying to ruin our relationship!” Shen An’an said anxiously. “Jiang Zhi Ning, Brother Sheng Hao and I are already engaged. You have no chance anymore!”
Her eyes gleamed with glee—she couldn’t wait to see Jiang Zhi Ning heartbroken.
Sheng Hao also turned to look at Jiang Zhi Ning. Based on how obsessed she used to be with him, he expected her to cause a scene.
Instead, Jiang Zhi Ning just replied with a bored “Oh.” She didn’t even bother making a face.
That’s it? Both Sheng Hao and Shen An’an looked at her in disbelief—especially Sheng Hao.
“Jiang Zhi Ning,” Sheng Hao said smugly, “if you don’t want me to hate you, behave yourself. Maybe I’ll consider helping you find a decent guy.”
Jiang Zhi Ning rolled her eyes to the sky. This guy was unbelievably narcissistic.
Making a “stay away from me” gesture, she said with disgust, “No thanks. I have high standards for friends.”
Sheng Hao’s face darkened instantly. Shen An’an scolded, “Jiang Zhi Ning, don’t be ungrateful. If Brother Sheng Hao doesn’t help you, you’ll end up marrying some rough, uncouth country bumpkin.”
“I’m already married. So please stop bothering me,” Jiang Zhi Ning said flatly.
“What? You’re married?!” Sheng Hao stared at her in disbelief. “No way!”
Wasn’t she head-over-heels for him? Didn’t she say she’d never marry anyone else? How could she be married?
Watching his stunned expression, Jiang Zhi Ning calmly pulled out her marriage certificate. “Take a good look. I’m married.”
Sheng Hao and Shen An’an both looked at the certificate. His face turned uglier by the second.
Shen An’an, however, noticed something on the certificate—the age.
“Zhi Ning,” she said, feigning concern but unable to hide the glee in her eyes, “I know you had it rough after being kicked out of the house… but how could you marry some old man?”
“Old men are fine. My man is good-looking, capable, and treats me well—way better than some freeloading fake heir,” Jiang Zhi Ning replied coolly.
Sheng Hao’s face sank. “I know you love me like crazy, but you didn’t have to lower yourself like this.”
Jiang Zhi Ning rolled her eyes again. “The sky may be vast, but not as vast as your ego. The earth may be thick, but not thicker than your skin.”
“You—!”
“Move it. Good dogs don’t block the road.” Jiang Zhi Ning scowled and frowned in disgust.
Sheng Hao grabbed her wrist, speaking in a pleading tone. “Go divorce that old man. I know you’re just doing this to get back at me for getting engaged.”
Before he could finish his sentence, Jiang Zhi Ning suddenly raised her leg and kicked him hard in the groin.
Unprepared, Sheng Hao doubled over in pain and couldn’t even stand up straight.
“Stop flattering yourself,” Jiang Zhi Ning said with revulsion, brushing his hand away. “Sheng Hao, I don’t like you.”
“My husband is a soldier. If you keep harassing me, I’ll call the police.”
With that, Jiang Zhi Ning took another bite of her sugar figurine and walked toward Song Yuzhou, who was not far away.
Sheng Hao clutched his injured manhood, watching helplessly as she ran up to a tall man. He saw the man glance their way, then take Jiang Zhi Ning’s hand and lead her away.
