Chapter 5
“Are you going back?”
A woman with braided hair asked when she heard Li Chunhua screaming for help.
They had just been chased out of the house like chickens by Li Chunhua—most of them had no intention of returning.
“No. Leng Zhaodi is just a little girl; she doesn’t have that much strength. It’s not like she can actually kill Leng Daguai and Li Chunhua.”
But teaching them a lesson? That they didn’t mind. They weren’t going to step in and stop her.
Those two deserved a beating.
“I say, we should go take a look.”
Zhang Aizhen spoke up. Before the others could object, she quickly explained, “I’m not worried about Leng Daguai, and I’m certainly not worried about Li Chunhua. I’m afraid Leng Zhaodi will be bullied.”
After all, Leng Zhaodi was only eighteen. How could she stand up to two grown adults?
“Here’s what—we’ll go over and check things out first. I’ll head back and get my husband.”
Li Chunhua’s pitiful wails were getting louder, and Zhang Aizhen feared things might get out of hand. She decided to go get her husband, Tan Sanyong, to help.
He was the brigade leader and carried authority—it would be easier for him to mediate.
Without another word, Zhang Aizhen rushed off to fetch Tan Sanyong.
The other villagers, worried that Leng Zhaodi might be seriously hurt or disabled, made their way back to the Leng house in small groups.
Yes, hitting someone was illegal—but there wasn’t any law saying you couldn’t hit your own child.
As soon as they entered the Leng family’s courtyard, they saw Leng Daguai running for his life clutching his head, being chased by Leng Zhaodi wielding a hoe.
“Help! Help! Leng Zhaodi’s trying to kill her father!”
Seeing people arrive, Leng Daguai quickly ran into the crowd and hid behind a tall, dark, and burly farmer for protection.
Leng Xue, seeing that people had shown up, put down the hoe. She wasn’t stupid. This wasn’t the apocalypse—killing someone was against the law, and would get her shot.
There were two reasons she caused such a scene today.
First, after seeing what Leng Zhaodi had gone through, she was furious. Leng Xue wasn’t the kind to bottle things up—slapping Li Chunhua a few times was her way of venting.
Just moments ago, when Leng Daguai tried to stick up for his wife, she’d kicked him too.
Now, chasing him with a hoe had completely scared the already cowardly man out of his wits.
Second, she wanted to blow things up so someone with actual authority in the brigade would come over. Leng Xue planned to officially cut ties with the Leng family in front of witnesses and find somewhere else to live.
She couldn’t stay in this house if she ever wanted to approach Gu Beilu in the future.
“Leng Zhaodi, have you gone crazy? You actually tried to kill your own father?!”
Seeing her lower the “weapon,” Leng Daguai poked his head out from behind the burly man and shouted at Leng Xue.
“I’m not crazy, and I don’t want to kill you. I just don’t want to marry a fool,” Leng Xue said calmly.
Xu Zhonghong had been terrified by the way Leng Xue acted just now. There was no way he was going to bring her home as his daughter-in-law. He immediately stepped in:
“Leng Daguai, since your daughter doesn’t want to marry, I won’t force it either. Let’s just forget it—return the betrothal money.”
Xu Zhonghong quickly walked over, keeping a good distance from Leng Xue, and looked for Leng Daguai in the crowd to ask for the money.
In the city, he was used to electric fans and popsicles to cool off. But here in the countryside, there was neither—and the heat had him panting like a dog.
Leng Daguai still didn’t want to return the money and was about to make up an excuse—until he saw Leng Xue raise the hoe again and slowly ask:
“So you don’t want to return the money, huh?”
“Well, let’s ask my hoe if it agrees with that!”
With that, Leng Xue swung the hoe hard into the ground and dug out a hole the size of a human head.
She had no intention of wasting time. Her posture and pressure alone were enough to make her point to Leng Daguai.
“I’ll give it back, I’ll give it back!”
Leng Daguai nodded frantically, scared out of his mind. He couldn’t understand—how had his timid, cowardly daughter turned into a murderous she-devil after just one fainting spell?!
