Chapter 5
Gu Keqing narrowed her beautiful eyes and asked him with a smile.
“Mm!”
Shen Yan gave a small, unnatural cough.
“Sister-in-law! What delicious food did you bring? Give me some too!”
Han Dashuan came running over, panting heavily, his face sunburned to a reddish black.
“Get lost!”
Shen Yan immediately took the lunch bundle from Gu Keqing’s hands and scolded him.
“Pfft!”
Gu Keqing burst into laughter. Her handsome man was really interesting.
Not only was he good-looking, but he could change expressions so fast.
When he looked at her, his gaze was warm and gentle, but the moment Han Dashuan arrived, his face turned cold.
But that was fine—this kind of warmth belonged only to her.
“I’ll head back now. Tonight I’ll make you some mung bean soup.”
With that, taking advantage of Shen Yan’s inattention, she planted a kiss on his cheek.
Shen Yan: “…” His face instantly turned bright red.
“Walk slowly.”
“Mm! Go eat.”
Gu Keqing stood there for a moment and felt she was about to be scorched to death. Luckily, before leaving the house she had gone into her space and applied a thick layer of sunscreen.
Otherwise, she really would have been roasted into a piece of dried black meat.
The couple’s lovey-dovey display fell into the eyes of the villagers working in the fields.
There was jealousy, envy, and also the hungry stares of some unmarried young men fixed on Gu Keqing.
After all, she was a city girl, with skin so fair it looked like water would drip from it.
“Second Brother, no wonder you’re not interested in the village girls. How could they compare to Sister-in-law? Even the girls in the city’s art troupe aren’t as good as her!”
Shen Ming took a big bite of potato stewed with beef, the aroma making him feel like he could float away.
“Eat and keep your mouth shut!”
Shen Yan glared at him, but the corners of his mouth were curved upward.
“Second, where did this beef come from?”
Father Shen remembered that they hadn’t bought beef for the wedding banquet.
“It should be from my wife. I’ll ask her tonight when we get home.”
The Shen men were starving, so they didn’t ask further and just started eating heartily.
The eldest sister-in-law, who had been cutting pig grass, saw Gu Keqing coming over after delivering the meal.
She put down her sickle, rubbed the dirt off her hands, and smiled at her. “Keqing, you’re here.”
On the way over, Gu Keqing had been thinking that this eldest sister-in-law was the female lead’s cousin and was probably not someone easy to get along with.
But as long as she didn’t cause trouble for her, Gu Keqing wouldn’t cause trouble either.
“Eldest Sister-in-law, go home and eat. Stop working!”
Seeing Qi Zhiyun smile at her, Gu Keqing also smiled back.
“I’ve only earned two work points. That’s too little.”
Qi Zhiyun’s health wasn’t good. After coming to the countryside, she couldn’t work as hard as the local women.
She always felt embarrassed about it.
Just the cost of her medicine alone had already taken a lot from the Shen family, not to mention that the work points she earned weren’t even enough to pay for the medicine.
So she always felt like she couldn’t lift her head.
“It’s fine. I’ve already told Mother that from now on, only the men in the family will work for points. The women won’t have to go. I’ll earn money to support you all.”
Gu Keqing had her own plans. She wanted to win over this eldest sister-in-law so that she would stand on her side.
That way, when the female lead Qi Zhilan arrived, Qi Zhiyun wouldn’t be foolish enough to help her cousin.
She wanted Qi Zhiyun to owe her a favor, so the whole family could stand united against outsiders—thus keeping herself alive.
After all, the female lead’s halo was too strong, and her means too many—she wouldn’t be easy to deal with.
“Sister-in-law… that’s not right…”
Qi Zhiyun looked troubled and lowered her head in guilt.
“It’s fine. Starting tomorrow, you won’t have to go to work. I’m going to the city to sell things and will use the money I make to buy your medicine.”
Gu Keqing smiled as she picked up the sickle, hooking her arm around Qi Zhiyun’s as they walked home.
“Thank you, Sister-in-law.”
Qi Zhiyun was honest but truly powerless to do more.
She really wanted to rest at home, but was afraid Mother Shen and Gu Keqing would gossip.
So she forced herself to go to work.
Since Gu Keqing had said so, she decided that from now on, no matter what, she would manage the household well.
“No need to thank me. From now on, just call me Keqing. We’re family.”
As she spoke, Gu Keqing was already thinking about the expensive foreign medicine in her space.
After the meal, she would go inside and take some out for Qi Zhiyun.
As the saying goes, “When you eat someone’s food, your mouth softens; when you take someone’s gift, your hands are tied.”
Judging by Qi Zhiyun’s condition, she would probably need to take medicine all year round.
The more Gu Keqing thought about it, the more she felt that transmigrating into this book wasn’t such a bad experience after all.
…
The two sisters-in-law returned to the Shen house.
Mother Shen had long been waiting eagerly.
Afraid the food would get cold, she had kept it warm on the stove.
No matter what, Gu Keqing insisted on delivering the meal before coming back to eat.
“Keqing, you must be tired. The fields are far away. Quickly drink some cool boiled water to refresh yourself.”
Mother Shen brought out two bowls of water from the kitchen for the two daughters-in-law.
“Thank you, Mother. Let’s eat.”
Qi Zhiyun helped bring the food to the table.
“Oh, Mother, you bought beef?”
“It was sent by Keqing’s classmate yesterday. They also sent quite a lot of noodles and oil.”
Mother Shen smiled and said, “Keqing, it must have been hard for you, marrying into our family.”
Qi Zhiyun knew that even at yesterday’s wedding banquet, there hadn’t been many meat dishes.
She herself was a sickly person—she not only couldn’t earn money for the family but also spent money. She didn’t even dare to take any beef.
“Eldest Sister-in-law, you should eat more meat so your body can recover faster.”
Gu Keqing could see Qi Zhiyun’s inferiority complex, so she used her chopsticks to put a few pieces of beef in her bowl.
“Mother, I’m going to the city tomorrow. What time does the village’s ox cart leave?”
“Five in the morning, back at two in the afternoon.”
“Mm, got it.”
Gu Keqing calculated when she should wake up tomorrow.
Before she transmigrated, she was always woken up by the butler in her big castle.
The Shen family didn’t have an alarm clock, so she planned to take one from her space when she went in to get the medicine later.
“Mother, I’m full.”
Gu Keqing wiped her mouth and was about to clear the dishes.
“Don’t worry, I’ll wash them. I’m not going to work this afternoon, so let me do more chores at home.”
Qi Zhiyun quickly pressed her hand down.
“All right, thank you, Eldest Sister-in-law. I’ll go get your medicine.”
Gu Keqing didn’t stand on ceremony. In truth, she didn’t even know how to wash dishes yet.
She would learn slowly in the future.
Saying that, she returned to her and Shen Yan’s room.
Then she bolted the door from the inside.
Going into her space was a secret operation—if someone came in and saw she wasn’t there, what would she do?
The big castle in her space contained many medicines, for all kinds of illnesses.
She had already discovered yesterday that when she took something out, an identical replacement would instantly appear.
That meant the things in the space wouldn’t spoil or run out—they were inexhaustible.
Thinking of this made Gu Keqing very happy.
Just selling the things in the space would be enough to earn her a fortune.
She found a few bottles of medicine for treating palpitations according to Qi Zhiyun’s symptoms, and also took out a small alarm clock.
She set the time, then tucked it back into the space, planning to take it out again at night when she went to bed.
“Eldest Sister-in-law, here are a few bottles of medicine for you.”
In the space, Gu Keqing had torn off the original packaging so only plain bottles remained.
She then explained the dosage and instructions to Qi Zhiyun according to the label.
“Keqing, these medicines look so high-end. They must be expensive, right?”
