Chapter 29: Wife, Be Good, Don’t Make Trouble

Du Ruofang found it a bit interesting—she hadn’t expected anyone in the military families’ compound to write a script. After reading it carefully, she realized the story was actually quite well-written.

—But a play?

Wasn’t that a bit far-fetched?

Du Ruofang didn’t look down on the military families, but a play required professional actors.

Without long-term training and rehearsal, could they really pull it off on impulse alone?

Du Ruofang pondered for a moment, then flipped through the script again.

Ran Jinnian!

What a beautiful name. Whose family member was she?

To be able to write a story like this, her educational background must be high.

“Regimental Commander, you wanted to see me?”

A girl in full uniform, face flushed, rushed in—clearly having just finished rehearsal.

Seeing Yan Qingxue, Du Ruofang’s expression softened with a hint of fondness. “Qingxue, for this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival gala, senior leaders will be attending. You’re the pillar of our troupe and have a leading role this time, but you’ve been making mistakes in rehearsal these past two days. Is something on your mind?”

Ever since meeting Ran Jinnian, Yan Qingxue had been unsettled these past two days, feeling powerless during rehearsals.

Du Ruofang was there to talk to her.

“Regimental Commander Du, nothing’s on my mind,” Yan Qingxue said, unable to speak the truth.

Du Ruofang sighed slightly. “Qingxue, the troupe attaches great importance to this Mid-Autumn gala. If your mistakes continue, the lead role might go to Xiang Qian.”

Xiang Qian held the second-highest position in the troupe, just below Yan Qingxue.

“No way.”

Yan Qingxue wouldn’t allow Xiang Qian to take the lead—she was the troupe’s mainstay. “Commander, I’ll focus on rehearsal and won’t disappoint your expectations.”

Du Ruofang looked even more confident in her. “Then rehearse well. I believe you’ll deliver excellent results.”

“Yes.” Yan Qingxue straightened her chest and lifted her head.

She suddenly noticed a performance list on the table. “Commander, what’s this? Do we have a new program to rehearse?”

The Southern Military Region was one of the four major military districts. The troupe naturally had many performing soldiers, including some men, though fewer than women.

For this Mid-Autumn gala, the troupe had prepared five performances: group singing, dancing, solo singing, solo dancing, and mixed-gender dance.

Yan Qingxue was in three of the programs herself.

The military families added one more program, making six in total.

But no one took the family performances seriously.

“No, this is the list of programs by the military families,” Du Ruofang shook her head, pointing to a list on the table. “This script is very good, but it’s a pity.”

“Script? What script?”

Yan Qingxue froze.

“This is a script for a play.”

“Ah.”

Yan Qingxue opened her mouth in surprise. She had seen many plays, all performed by professional actors and teams.

Every rehearsal took several months.

These families were like frogs in a well, lacking experience, thinking a play could just be performed on a whim.

She couldn’t help but sneer. “Thinking it’s that simple.”

“They don’t understand plays, but the fact they care is good. It’s just a pity that Ran Jinnian took the trouble to write this story as a script,” Du Ruofang said regretfully.

“Commander, who wrote it?”

Yan Qingxue’s lashes trembled in disbelief, unable to accept Du Ruofang’s words.

Du Ruofang glanced at the script again. “Ran Jinnian. Do you know her?”

“No.” Yan Qingxue’s eyes widened in astonishment. She hadn’t expected Ran Jinnian to write a script good enough to earn Du Ruofang’s praise.

She knew Du Ruofang well—she never complimented anyone lightly.

“This family member’s work is truly impressive. You can see she has some talent.”
“Commander, may I take a look?”

Yan Qingxue was curious. What kind of script had Ran Jinnian written?

“Go ahead.”

Du Ruofang handed it over.

Yan Qingxue read it carefully, intending to find flaws and criticize it.

But after reading, she dared not.

It was a red revolutionary story, recounting the glorious history of the nation’s leaders and people in great struggles—a precious spiritual treasure of the nation.

Any wrong words could become a political issue.

Yan Qingxue could only hold back.

And she had to admit—the story was really well-written.

Yan Qingxue felt frustrated. She had assumed Ran Jinnian was just a rural girl, but she was beautiful, educated, and a talented writer.

She muttered awkwardly, “Commander, I’ll go continue rehearsing.”

“Go ahead.”

Du Ruofang was pleased with her enthusiasm.

On her way back, Yan Qingxue thought, Even if Ran Jinnian wrote such a good story, those families won’t be able to perform it. Her script is doomed to never be staged.

This thought eased her frustration considerably.

……

Military families’ compound.

In the past two days after work, Lu Jinyuan had dismantled one of the small wardrobes and converted it into a shoe rack.

Building a shoe rack wasn’t difficult, but taking apart the wardrobe took time.

After two busy days, he finally finished it.

“Hubby, you’re amazing.” Ran Jinnian hugged him and kissed him.

Lu Jinyuan!!!!!!

He quickly glanced outside and, seeing no one was watching, spoke, though his ears reddened. “Wife, mind your posture.”

Ran Jinnian saw him trying to look serious, but his eyes wouldn’t meet hers.

Emboldened, she hugged his arm and spoke in a soft, playful voice, “Hubby.”

A spark of heat surged through him, almost uncontrollable. His voice grew husky. “Wife, be good. Don’t make trouble.”

Ran Jinnian found his serious, restrained demeanor irresistible and couldn’t help pinching his face.

“Wife, attention!” Lu Jinyuan’s body stiffened like a tall tree, standing straighter than even in military posture.

Ran Jinnian poked his chest. “Commander Lu, I’m not your soldier.”

Lu Jinyuan hadn’t expected his wife to be so disobedient. With a large hand, he scooped her up and carried her into the room.

Ran Jinnian panicked. “Lu Jinyuan, my belly makes this inconvenient.”

He placed her on the bed. “Inconvenient how?”

Her pale cheeks flushed slightly. “You can’t be reckless.”

Leaning close to her ear with a low chuckle, he said, “No rush. We have plenty of time.”

Ran Jinnian!!!!!!

She dared not imagine life after giving birth.

She wouldn’t provoke him further.

Seeing that his wife finally listened, he went out to bring in the shoe rack.

“Place it by the door.” Ran Jinnian pointed to the spacious area near the main entrance.

After placing the rack, Lu Jinyuan arranged all the shoes.

He had three pairs; Ran Jinnian had seven.

When he finished, he said, “I have a day off the day after tomorrow. Tomorrow afternoon we’ll go into town and stay at the guesthouse overnight. The day after, we’ll shop in the morning and host dinner in the evening.”
