Huo Yishen remained relatively calm. “Everyone has a gambling nature. Weren’t you gambling when you stocked up on cruise ships and yachts?”
“I’m different from them,” Jiang Ning rubbed her temples. ‘I have the space to cheat. When in danger, I can hide, but they only have their flesh and blood.’
This was purely seeking death.
“But this is their own decision,” Huo Yishen said calmly. “Ding Qi was originally in this line of work, Zheng Weili experienced a huge change in family affection, and Lu Yu, like Zhang Chao, has been suffering.”
The four of them working as security patrol officers were already gambling with their lives. This time, they were just gambling even bigger.
“They work hard, but they can only afford to live in slums. They take small steps towards owning a house, enduring cramped living conditions every day, and unable to return home because of attacks that happen when the Eternal Night arrives. All four of them squeeze into your house, while we relax in the villa, enjoying meat and wine. How can they stay calm?”
It wasn’t about envy or jealousy; they were all ordinary survivors who had experienced five years of natural disasters. Who wouldn’t have some psychological issues?
When pushed to the brink, they would indeed gamble with their lives.
Lose the gamble, lose their lives.
Win the gamble, gain wealth and honor.
What Huo Yishen said made sense. If Jiang Ning didn’t understand them, she would directly stop them instead of letting them carefully consider.
In the end, she was only concerned as a friend, but this concern was so weak. You couldn’t enjoy meat and wine yourself and then tell them to just have porridge, and absolutely not to gamble their lives for tomorrow.
That’s just talking without experiencing the pain.
But if she really watched her close friends gamble their lives, they would likely die, and it would be hard on her heart.
“Anning, everyone has their own way of living,” Huo Yishen held her hand. “As friends, we certainly don’t want them to gamble with their lives, but if they have made a decision, we have no right to stop them.”
If his days came to this, he would also want his family to live better and wouldn’t miss this opportunity.
Jiang Ning knew this, which made her feel sad.
This feeling of powerlessness was really unbearable.
After waiting anxiously for two days, Zhang Chao finally contacted them via the walkie-talkie. “Anning, the four of us have thoroughly investigated the mountain. There are more than 50 people there, and it seems they are also holding hostages. We’ve carefully considered and made a plan. We’ve decided to go through with it.’
He paused and then laughed, “If we don’t come back, we’ll admit defeat. You and Brother Shen should just consider us as not having these few friends. You must live well until the end of the world.”
Just as they were about to hang up, Jiang Ning spoke up, “Wait.”
She wouldn’t join them, but as a friend, she could offer some help to increase their chances of success.
“I can lend you the Hummer, and I’ll try to get some sets of bulletproof vests. Huo Yishen can make bombs and homemade explosives. You should find a way to come and get them. Remember, survive at all costs!”
Zhang Chao remained silent on the other end for a while before saying, “Anning, thank you.”
After hanging up the walkie-talkie, Jiang Ning vigorously rubbed her face, took a deep breath to calm her emotions.
Just as she was about to prepare lunch, she heard a knock on the door downstairs.
Looking from the balcony, it was unexpectedly the Rolls-Royce from the Rong family, with Guan Shu standing beside it.
The Rolls-Royce belonged to Mr. Rong. At this critical juncture, what were they doing here?
Jiang Ning went downstairs to open the door.
Guan Shu opened the car door, ‘Miss Jiang, my master invites you.’
Mr. Rong had come in person.
Jiang Ning was puzzled but still got into the car. “I wonder why Mr. Rong has come personally. What’s the matter?”
Mr. Rong looked somewhat haggard, as if he had aged several years in an instant.
As a prominent figure in the business world of Fengcheng and the former richest person in the country, despite the five years of natural disasters, his temperament and cultivation remained intact. “Miss Jiang, do you know about the kidnapping of Third Young Master?”
“I’ve heard some news, but I’m not clear on the specifics.”
“The Rong family has recruited many bounty hunter groups. As long as they rescue him, they’ll receive 10,000 kilograms of grain. I know both Miss Jiang and Mr. Huo are capable individuals. Are you interested in this mission?”
Jiang Ning apologized, “Thank you for your high regard, Mr. Rong. I I deeply regret that the third young master was kidnapped, but I believe he is a fortunate individual. With Mr. Rong’s leadership, he will surely return safely.
10,000 kilograms of grain is indeed tempting, but our abilities are limited, and we don’t want to burden Mr. Rong’s rescue operation.”
If the recruited bounty hunter groups were truly capable, Mr. Rong wouldn’t have come personally. “Miss Jiang, there’s no need to be modest. If you feel that the reward of 10,000 kilograms of grain is not enough, feel free to ask for more. As long as I can provide, I will fulfill your requests.”
“It’s not about the reward; it’s about our limited abilities. We still have a child to raise.”
People can only accomplish what they are capable of. Jiang Ning understood her and Huo Yishen’s capabilities very well. Moreover, they weren’t lacking in food and drink, so they wouldn’t become reckless gamblers unless absolutely necessary.
Listening to her words, Mr. Rong felt disappointed once again.
His son went to the Building 50 every day, yet why couldn’t he learn from their maturity and stability?
Mr. Rong sighed deeply. It seemed this was the fate of a disappointment. The natural disasters didn’t take his life, but he ended up making foolish decisions.
After seeing Mr. Rong off, Jiang Ning went home to prepare lunch.
The three adults and one dog ate together, and she mentioned lending the car to Zhang Chao during the meal.
Huo Yishen thought, “With over 50 people living in a cave, plus the seized supplies and hostages, the cave is probably quite large. It’s likely a karst cave, known for its complex internal structure and possibly multiple exits. Using bombs and fire from outside the cave might not be very effective.”
Jiang Ning also felt a headache. Zhang Chao and the others were being too reckless.
“I’ll make some tear gas bombs and see if that can help.”
Jiang Ning didn’t expect Huo Yishen to be so knowledgeable, but he indeed had several boxes of chemicals stored in the corner of the space and hadn’t touched them.
She took out all the items and let Huo Yishen handle them.
After spending half a day, they made a total of 20 bombs, keeping 10 for themselves for emergencies and giving the other 10 to Zhang Chao and his team.
They gave what they could, and it was up to them to make use of it.
Adults should take responsibility for their own decisions. Jiang Ning didn’t want to stop them and then regret it when they continued to suffer, causing resentment and grievances.
In the evening, the two of them drove to the entrance of the community.
It didn’t take long before the four of them arrived in the dark.
Four sets of bulletproof vests, two of which were provided by Third Young Master Rong, were of excellent quality.
The other two sets were ones Jiang Ning and Huo Yishen had previously stocked up on.
Unexpectedly, the four of them declined, as the police station issued bulletproof vests to security patrol officers.
Confirming that they had them, Jiang Ning took them back but still gave them four guns, fuel bombs, and tear gas bombs.
She mentioned the possibility of the cave being a karst cave. “Are you planning a strong attack?”
Ding Qi had made a thorough plan. “We’ve observed for a few days and found that they’re kidnapping people, both men and women. The men are likely from wealthy families, and the women need to be young and beautiful.”
Her figure was still decent, and with a little grooming, she could be presentable. She could let herself be captured first and then take action when the opportunity arose.
From wealthy families? Jiang Ning frowned. “Are you sure?”
