Chapter 13
“Speak! What on earth has gotten into you two brothers?”
Mother Mu’s face was filled with anger, her voice trembling with rage. She glared at her two sons in front of her and tossed her handbag straight onto the sofa.
Mu Beiwang and Mu Beichen both kept their heads down in silence, which only infuriated her even more. She felt the veins at her temples throbbing.
“Mu Beiwang, you started it. Tell me, why aren’t you in school? Why did you run to your brother’s workplace to beat someone up? What exactly were you trying to do?”
“That’s your older brother—your own flesh and blood—not some mortal enemy!” Mother Mu’s voice grew sharper. She truly couldn’t understand her younger son’s behavior.
“And another thing—what can’t be discussed properly at home? Why did you have to hit someone in public? Where am I supposed to put my face after this?”
“People even came to ask me if I was being biased, if I had done something unfair to you, for you to want to beat your brother half to death!”
The more she spoke, the angrier she became. She felt as if her youngest son might just be the death of her.
Taking a deep breath, she tried to calm herself, then shot her younger son a fierce glare and barked, “Enough. Go kneel! When your father comes back, I’ll have him deal with you properly!”
But Mu Beiwang suddenly lifted his head and met his mother’s eyes, refusing to back down. “I won’t kneel!”
Mother Mu froze, clearly not expecting such defiance. Her expression darkened instantly. “What did you just say? You won’t kneel?”
“That’s right, I won’t kneel!” Mu Beiwang’s voice was firm. “If anyone should kneel, it’s Mu Beichen. Aren’t you even going to ask what he did?”
His words caught Mother Mu off guard. She turned to look at her elder son, Mu Beichen, who wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, let out a cold laugh, and said to his brother, “What did I do? You came in swinging without a word. As far as I know, I haven’t done anything to wrong you.”
Mu Beiwang nodded, his bloodshot eyes locking on the man before him like a predator’s. Through clenched teeth, he said, “You’re right—you haven’t done anything to wrong me. But the person you wronged is Xia Chuwei!”
At that, Mother Mu was completely stunned. She stared at her two sons in disbelief, suspicion written all over her face. “What… what’s that supposed to mean? What does this have to do with Chuwei?”
Mu Beichen was also taken aback, clearly not expecting his younger brother to suddenly bring this up.
But he quickly regained his composure and shook his head in denial. “I haven’t done anything to wrong her.”
Mu Beiwang didn’t give him the chance to explain, pressing forward relentlessly. “Yesterday, you didn’t have time to celebrate Nianchu’s birthday, didn’t have time to go with her to get the marriage certificate, and at the restaurant, you didn’t even have time to take her home. What exactly were you so busy with?”
The barrage of questions left Mu Beichen momentarily speechless, his expression growing darker.
Mu Beiwang snorted at his silence, then drove the point home. “You weren’t busy with work at all—you were with Xu Xueqing.”
“You went to the station to pick her up, then held a welcome dinner for her at the restaurant, and finally, you personally took her home! Am I wrong?”
When he finished, Mu Beiwang’s gaze was as sharp as an eagle’s, fixed squarely on Mu Beichen’s face—as if daring him to deny it so he’d have an excuse to strike again.
