Chapter 16

“I don’t want to talk to you right now. Go kneel over there! When your father comes back, we’ll have a proper talk about this!”
Madam Mu looked at her troublesome son with a face full of worry and let out a helpless sigh.

Seeing this, Mu Bei didn’t bother to hide his feelings and said to her,
“Mom, don’t get so worked up. That’s just how Big Brother is—he’ll never admit he’s wrong. Even if you make him kneel, it’s useless; he doesn’t even realize what he’s done wrong.”

Then Mu Bei turned his aim directly at Mu Nan, mocking,
“Big Brother, just admit it already! It’s not like Chu Wei can’t find someone better than you to marry. She’s got great qualities herself. This whole ‘eating from the bowl while eyeing the pot’ act of yours is downright shameful!”

The more Mu Bei spoke, the more riled up he got.
“To think Mom and Dad have always told me to learn from you. If I really learned from you, Mom and Dad would probably be driven to their graves in anger!”
When he finished, he kept shaking his head, the ridicule on his face growing more obvious.

Xia Chu Wei, listening from the side, felt a pang of discomfort. She tugged lightly on Mu Bei’s hand, signaling him not to go on. But Mu Bei acted as if he hadn’t noticed, glaring at her instead and saying impatiently,
“What? Xia Chu Wei, I’m helping you get justice here, and you’re feeling sorry for him instead?”

The more Mu Bei thought about it, the angrier he became.
“You’re such a fool! Yesterday outside the private room, you saw them drink from the same wedding cups, and you heard the way they belittled and insulted you. You should’ve stormed right in and flipped the table—what were you so afraid of?”

“You’re his rightful fiancée! The engagement hasn’t even been called off yet. Even if you went right up and beat them, you’d still be in the right! Mu Beichen sneaking around with another woman behind your back—that’s clearly his fault! Why hide and cry about it?” Mu Bei glared at Xia Chu Wei, his tone sharp.

Xia Chu Wei kept her head down, tears brimming in her eyes, but she forced herself not to let them fall. In a soft voice, she said,
“I’m fine. The engagement will be called off soon anyway. And they’re not wrong—Beichen and Xu Xueqing knew each other before I came along. If we’re being honest, I’m the one who came between them. Please, don’t be angry, okay?”

Looking at her wronged expression, Mu Bei’s anger didn’t cool down—it flared even hotter. Holding her shoulders and looking straight into her eyes, he pressed,
“Xia Chu Wei, say that again—who came between who?”

Frightened by his intensity, Xia Chu Wei froze for a moment. Her lips trembled slightly before she hesitated and finally whispered,
“It was me… I came between them.”

“What?” Mu Bei couldn’t believe what he was hearing. His eyes widened in shock as he stared at her.
“How can you say that? This isn’t your fault! Chu Wei, how can you think of yourself like that?”

Madam Mu, watching from the side, felt her heart ache. She quickly walked over and pulled Xia Chu Wei into her arms, gently comforting her,
“Child, don’t say that. This isn’t your fault—don’t take all the blame onto yourself.”

“Back then, it was Big Brother who personally agreed to this marriage,” Mu Bei said firmly.
“He could have refused, but he didn’t. Now he likes another woman—that’s his fault. Since he agreed back then, he should take responsibility for you.”
