Chapter 8
With just these four words, something in Lu Jingze’s body seemed to explode.
The composure he was so proud of once again went out of control.
Lu Yujiao was completely hidden in the quilt, with only the upper half of her face showing, and her eyes looked even more captivatingly beautiful.
Everyone in the village said that she was a fox spirit, and Lu Jingze never liked hearing others say that about her.
But now, he had to admit that she was more likely to make a man lose his mind than a vixen.
The final bottom line was about to break, Lu Jingze’s Adam’s apple rolled, and veins were slightly exposed.
He clenched his fists, a trace of rationality still remaining, but his voice was completely hoarse.
“That’s not good.”
She is young and ignorant.
But he couldn’t seek his own comfort by ruining a girl’s innocence.
Lu Jingze turned his face away with great difficulty, and the veins on his neck became more obvious.
Lu Yujiao looked at him, her heart sinking.
Even though she was like this, he still refused.
How much does he dislike her that he can restrain the most primitive instinct of a man.
As Lu Yujiao thought about it, tears overflowed from the corners of her eyes, slid across her straight nose, and finally fell on the pillow.
“Do I bother you like this?”
Her voice was soft and trembling, and her sadness and disappointment turned into tears.
Lu Jingze was suddenly panicked.
That wasn’t what he meant at all, so why did she misunderstand him again?
“You, please listen to my explanation.”
Lu Yujiao didn’t listen, she just cried.
Lu Jingze’s heart was in a mess like a crumpled piece of paper due to crying, and his brows were furrowed.
He is not good at coaxing people.
I just remember my good brother once said that this is harder than shooting a gun.
He didn’t take it seriously at the time, but now he realizes how damn difficult it is.
“…” Lu Jingze couldn’t find anything suitable to wipe her tears, so he simply took off his coat and grabbed the hem of his clothes to wipe them.
He didn’t realize how rough his hands were from being used to holding weapons, and how rough his cautious force was to Lu Yujiao.
Just a casual wipe left a red mark on Lu Yujiao’s delicate and tender cheek.
At the same time, Lu Yujiao cried even harder under his silent comfort, almost unable to speak, venting all her grievances.
Lu Jingze paused, completely panicked.
“I don’t dislike you.”
Lu Yujiao ignored him and continued crying hard.
Lu Jingze hated himself for being tongue-tied and tried to catch her falling tears even more carefully.
“It’s just that things like this should wait until after marriage, otherwise it will hurt you.”
His ideas were old-fashioned. Lu Yujiao took the opportunity to grab the corner of his clothes and asked pitifully.
“Then you will marry me?”
There were still tears on her eyelashes, and she looked up at him like a broken star.
“Yes.” Lu Jingze’s heart moved, he was looking forward to this answer.
“Really?” Lu Yujiao couldn’t believe it. She knew the huge gap between her and Lu Jingze. “But I’ve been married three times, and they all said I was a disaster. You’re different. I heard that all the good girls in the surrounding area want to marry you, and they’re just hoping your family will come to propose.”
Lu Jingze wiped the tear marks from the corners of her eyes and said, “I will only marry you.”
Hearing his promise, Lu Yujiao’s eyelashes trembled and she burst into laughter.
“Don’t lie to me.”
“I’m not lying to you.”
“Will you take me with you to the army?”
“If you want.”
“What’s it like to celebrate New Year in the army?”
“Make dumplings, eat dumplings, and have a New Year’s Eve party.”
“Do you have dumplings?”
“Well, do you like dumplings?”
“I like it. When my parents were still alive, we would make dumplings together during the Chinese New Year.”
When Lu Yujiao talked about her parents, her eyes dimmed again.
Lu Jingze knew that this was her sad story, so he didn’t mention it again and just looked at the sky outside.
“It’s late, go to bed.”
“It’s cold.” Lu Yujiao’s eyes were innocent. “I’m not lying to you. It’s really cold.”
Lu Jingze sighed faintly, tightened his arms around the quilt, and hugged her through it.
“Warm?”
“Aren’t you going to sleep in here?”
Lu Jingze shook his head, “I’ll guard the fire.”
She felt cold even though the charcoal brazier was burning so brightly. If it was extinguished in the middle of the night, she would probably wake up from the cold.
Since she was next to him, he couldn’t sleep, so he just stared at the charcoal brazier and kept adding fuel to the fire.
…
Lu Yujiao slept soundly after getting Lu Jingze’s promise.
The next day, Lu Jingze repaired his bed, and Lu Yujiao did not secretly destroy it again.
She likes the secluded life in the mountains very much.
Lu Jingze is capable and strong. Any physical work seems easy to him. He can do the work of several men alone.
With him around, Lu Yujiao could live a fairy-like life even in the deep mountains and forests.
He made hunting tools with his bare hands, and every day he caught rabbits or pheasants, so he had meat for every meal.
The chopped firewood was thick and straight, piled up to form half a wall, and there was never enough to use it all.
When he has time, he also adds some small furniture to the house, all of which he makes by hand.
The cabin began to look more and more like home.
A stable, leisurely and comfortable life is like a dream to Lu Yujiao.
The last time she was this happy was before she was ten years old.
Lu Yujiao was glad that she had found Lu Jingze, and secretly praised her own vision.
If she had known that Lu Jingze was so easy to talk to and would do his best to help without her having to do anything, she wouldn’t have had to plan for so long.
Maybe he has already arrived at the military compound and is enjoying himself.
…
Everything was fine originally.
On the 27th day of the twelfth lunar month, Lu Jingze suddenly suggested going out early the next morning.
Lu Yujiao subconsciously grabbed the corner of his coat.
“Do I have to go?”
“Yes, something happened.” Lu Jingze frowned and thought for a moment, “I’ll be back as soon as possible.”
He now had some idea of Lu Yujiao’s temperament. At least he knew that saying this would make her laugh and relax her mood.
However, Lu Yujiao was a little worried.
“Will you be back before dark?”
Lu Jingze pondered for a moment and said helplessly: “There are a lot of things to do, I——”
He was halfway through his words when he looked up and saw Lu Yujiao’s expression, and immediately changed his words, “I’ll finish it as soon as possible and be back before dark.”
Lu Yujiao was finally relieved and nodded, “Then I’ll wait for you to come back.”
Lu Jingze didn’t sleep again that night.
In order to fulfill his promise, he stayed by the sleeping Lu Yujiao’s bed, occasionally adding firewood, and when the first light of day came through, he went out.
Leave early and come back early.
…
As soon as Lu Yujiao woke up, she felt that the surroundings were empty.
After Lu Jingze left, the yang energy in the forest seemed to be sucked out.
She felt inexplicably cold and empty.
In the past, when Lu Jingze worked, she would move a bench and watch him, and she found it pleasing and interesting.
Now that she was alone, she didn’t know what to do.
Suddenly, there was a sound of bells.
Lu Yujiao saw the string hanging in front of the house moving, pulling the bell hanging on it.
This is a defensive device set up by Lu Jingze. If anyone approaches the wooden house, the bell will ring.
This bell is very powerful. It rang twice in the past few days. When Lu Jingze heard it, he immediately followed the sound and sent the person away, so she was not discovered.
But it’s still early now. Lu Jingze will definitely not come back so early, let alone step on the defense device he set up.
So… who’s coming?
