Chapter 15: Playing Tricks on the Zhao Sisters
Luo Qiao thought of the xun[1]a type of ancient Chinese flute in the musical instrument room of the bamboo house in her space. In her previous life, she had learned various musical instruments, although she wasn’t proficient, she could manage to play them. Now, the sky was gradually darkening.
The educated youth courtyard was a bit distant from the village, with the closest neighbor being Lu Yichen’s house. Over the past few days, the Zhao sisters from the Zhao family had been coming over one or two at a time, trying to get close to her, which was starting to annoy her.
After a moment of consideration, Luo Qiao turned and walked towards the backyard where there was a small door connecting to the courtyard of the male educated youth. Although the latch was on the female educated youth side, Luo Qiao managed to open the door leading to the male educated youth’s courtyard.
She found a secluded spot, entered her space, went upstairs, fetched a xun, tested it in the space, and found it to be in good condition before leaving the space.
When the two figures were about a hundred meters away from her courtyard, Luo Qiao began to play an eerie tune on the xun. This frightened the Zhao sisters, who ran away screaming as they fled.
“If you’re so used to annoying people whenever you’re free, I’ll scare you to death! Hmph!”
Lu Yichen, standing in his own courtyard, heard the commotion coming from the direction of the educated youth courtyard and looked over with some confusion.
Hearing the Zhao sisters shouting about ghosts as they ran towards his house, Lu Yichen couldn’t help but feel worried about the young girl.
When Luo Qiao heard the knock on the door, she asked somewhat irritably, “Who is it?”
Lu Yichen heard the angry question, “It’s me, Lu Yichen,”
With one inside and one outside the courtyard gate, Luo Qiao inquired further, “What’s up?”
“No big deal, I heard some noise over here just now, so I came over to check. As long as you’re okay.”
“I’m fine, thanks, Big Brother Lu. It’s getting late, so go back and rest early.”
Upon hearing the footsteps fade away, Luo Qiao sighed and returned to her room. She looked around the empty space and sighed again, then locked the doors and windows before entering the space.
These days, she basically slept inside the space at night. Anyway, she could hear any movements outside, and besides, she didn’t want to use someone else’s old quilt. Currently, she was using a new bedding she had taken from the storage in her space.
In her space, she had already planted grains on the ten acres of land: dry rice, wheat, corn, sorghum, millet, foxtail millet, soybeans, and even some green beans and red beans in the corners. She also planted a lot of sweet potatoes and potatoes on the sides of the valley, and didn’t leave any place near the creek without planting various vegetables.
Looking at her space now filled with her crops, Luo Qiao felt extremely pleased. Tomorrow, it would be great if she could find chicken, duck, and goose seedlings for sale at the commune. She had already tested the space with mice from her house.
Since living things could survive in her space, she decided to raise some chickens, ducks, and geese in there for future food needs. This way, in a few days, she would have eggs and meat to eat, which was great.
She felt quite good looking at the lively space, but thinking about her current financial difficulties, it seemed she still needed to figure out how to make some money tomorrow.
During this period, she had been busy working to leave a good impression on the commune members, and hadn’t had time to walk in the mountains.
If she returned early from the commune tomorrow, she would definitely take a trip to the mountains.
After exercising in the space for a while, she thought about the original owner’s body. The height was not short, at 163 cm, but it was too thin. Without finding a doctor, it was clear that it was malnutrition.
However, these days, she has already tidied up her body with her abilities. Plus, she cooked meals and drank water daily using the well water from the space. Her body might look fragile now, but inside, it was vastly different.
The grains that the captain’s wife had previously sent could only last her about a month. She needed to figure out a way to get more grains and also establish a sustainable source soon, or else others would start to suspect.
