Chapter 4
Jiang Ning and her mother-in-law carried the wash basin and walked towards the village entrance. They met many elderly people in the village on the way.
As the CBD of Qinghe Village, the big banyan tree at the entrance of the village naturally gathers a lot of people.
“Hey, look at that girl next to Yufen. Isn’t she the bride who just came in today to bring good luck to her son?”
An old woman wearing a headscarf squinted her eyes and looked at the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law walking towards them not far away, and couldn’t help asking.
Upon hearing this, everyone looked behind them.
“Oh, that girl is quite pretty! What a pity…” Li Dazui, the famous gossip in the village, smacked her lips with a look of regret.
“I heard that the kid from the Ji family is crazy. If she marries him, she will be a widow…” another old woman echoed.
The bright sunlight made Jiang Ning squint her eyes. She and her mother-in-law naturally heard the open mockery of the group of people.
“Ignore them, just treat their words as fart.” Tian Yufang’s face froze, and she whispered to Jiang Ning beside her.
“Mom, it was too far away, I didn’t hear it.” Jiang Ning said with a smile.
Upon hearing this, Tian Yufang turned her head and looked at her sensible daughter-in-law, feeling very relieved.
“Yufen, come and sit for a while!”
When the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law passed under the tree, Li Dazui suddenly started talking to Tian Yufang.
Tian Yufang passed by them as if she neither heard nor saw the group of people under the tree.
“Tsk, why are you so arrogant? You think your son is a soldier!” Li Dazui snorted disdainfully and said sarcastically when she saw Tian Yufang ignoring her.
“Oh, she’s like that. She used to walk with her back as straight as a coffin, but now she’s bent down.”
“I don’t think the kid from the Ji family will live long. I’ve never seen anyone who can survive for ten days or half a month without food or water.”
“…………”
There was a constant stream of discussion behind him. Jiang Ning noticed that the knuckles of her mother-in-law’s fingers were white as she gripped the edge of the basin, and knew that she was feeling very uncomfortable at the moment.
Jiang Ning reached into his jacket pocket, took out a packet of itching powder from the space, and then threw it behind him with the help of the wind.
These people are disrespectful to their elders and always try to poke fun at other people’s sore spots, so naturally she will make them suffer a little.
The itching powder she developed is not ordinary. When it is attached to the skin surface, it not only causes extreme itching but also causes blisters.
Once the blisters are scratched, new blisters will form where the pus flows.
However, the effect of this itching powder is only three days, but Jiang Ning believes that these three days will make them suffer and be unforgettable.
The mother-in-law and daughter-in-law had not walked three meters away when they heard bursts of commotion coming from behind them.
“Ouch, why is my neck so itchy!”
“My mouth is itchy too. I wonder if I was bitten by some bug!”
“Don’t say that, my arm is itchy…”
Tian Yufang turned around and looked at the person scratching his head under the tree behind him. He couldn’t help but feel relieved. “You deserve it. You’re so rude.”
After a while, the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law came to the river. Tian Yufang walked to a big rock by the river, put down the basin, squatted down, and began to prepare to wash clothes.
Jiang Ning’s attention was attracted by the lush bamboo forests on both sides of the river.
She then turned and walked towards the bamboo forest behind her.
“Hey, Ningning, where are you going?” Tian Yufang asked nervously.
“Mom, I’ll go to the woods to get a bamboo. I’ll be back soon.” Jiang Ning said and turned to leave.
Jiang Ning stepped into the bamboo forest. The bamboo leaves of Xizhou rustled, and sunlight filtered through the gaps, casting mottled shadows on the ground.
She raised her hand and took out a sharp saber from the space. The blade shone coldly in the sunlight.
She glanced at Xi Zhou and selected a bamboo with moderate thickness and an upright tip.
With a wave of his hand and a slash of the knife, the bamboo broke.
She neatly cut off the thin branches and excess leaves at the top, and then shaved the bottom of the bamboo into a sharp spear head. Her technique was clean and neat, and it was obvious that this did not seem like her first time doing this.
She weighed the bamboo spear in her hand, nodded with satisfaction, and then put the saber back into space.
Walking out of the bamboo forest, she headed straight to the river.
The river water is so clear that you can vaguely see fish swimming.
Jiang Ning fixed his eyes on aof grass carp.
She took two steps back, took advantage of the momentum and jumped, landing lightly on a rock in the middle of the river. Her body was as steady as a rock, and the bamboo spear was tightly grasped in her hand.
Her breathing slowed, her eyes sharp as a hawk, staring intently at the water.
Suddenly, the shadow of the fish flashed – she flicked her wrist, and the bamboo spear pierced into the water like lightning!
“Splash!” Water splashed westward, and a bamboo spear broke through the water, with a struggling fish stuck on the tip of the spear.
Jiang Ning raised the corner of his mouth slightly, took the fish off the hook and threw it next to Tian Yufang who was washing clothes on the shore.
Tian Yufang standing by stared at Jiang Ning’s actions with her mouth wide open in amazement. Is her daughter-in-law so capable?
“Mom, we have fish soup tonight. You can clean the fish as well later!” Jiang Ning said to her mother-in-law.
Tian Yufang came back to her senses, her face full of surprise, “Ningning, where did you learn this skill? It’s amazing!”
Jiang Ning smiled and said, “Mom, when I couldn’t fill my stomach before, I would go to the river to catch fish to fill my stomach, and naturally I learned a set of fishing skills.”
Tian Yufang felt a pang of sadness when she heard this. She had previously inquired about her daughter-in-law’s experience in her parents’ home, but she had never expected that her real situation was so difficult.
At this time, several young women from the village came from a distance. When they saw Jiang Ning catch the fish, they all looked at him with envy.
Jiang Ning was concentrating on catching fish without any distractions, and didn’t take the shocked and envious expressions of others to heart.
Tian Yufang was delighted when she saw this scene. She thought that this new daughter-in-law was not only beautiful but also capable. Her son had really found a treasure.
At noon, the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law happily went home to prepare fish soup with a lot of fish and washed clothes.
That night, Jiang Ning volunteered to cook the meal himself.
Old Mrs. Ji stood at the kitchen door with the help of a cane, looking at Jiang Ning busy behind the stove, her heart beaming with joy. It seemed that the immortal was right, this girl could bring good luck to their family.
“Yanli is saved now!” the old lady said with a smile, then turned and left.
At twelve o’clock noon, the sun was high in the sky, emitting a blazing light.
As the whistle sounded for the end of work, the people working in the fields stopped their work, quickly packed up their farm tools, and then walked quickly towards home.
Ji Yansui carried a basket with a shovel in it and followed closely beside her father Ji Hongzhi.
She asked curiously, “Dad, what kind of person is the new sister-in-law?”
Ji Hongzhi’s skin was tanned by the sun and his face was full of the vicissitudes of life.
His hands became rough and covered with thick calluses due to long-term labor.
He carried a hoe on his shoulder and walked steadily on the narrow ridge of the field.
Hearing his daughter’s question, Ji Hongzhi shook his head, as if thinking about how to answer.
After a while, he finally spoke: “Sui Sui, your sister-in-law is also a miserable person. When you get home later, be polite to her and don’t give her a bad look.”
Ji Yansui nodded obediently and said, “I know, Dad, don’t worry. If my brother can get better, you can even let me support my sister-in-law!”
Ji Hongzhi was amused by his daughter’s words. He said with a smile: “You girl, you are being frivolous again!”
Ji Family
Tian Yufang cooked a pot of brown rice, and Jiang Ning also prepared the fish soup.
As soon as the steaming hot meal was served on the table, the courtyard door was pushed open from the outside.
“Mom, Grandma, we’re back. Is the meal ready? I’m so hungry!”
