Chapter 46: A Matter of Character
In the past, Ning Lingyu used to feel that it wasn’t appropriate to talk about their private dirty affairs in front of the elders, and besides, Luo Jianing was particularly good at pretending.
But this time was different. If she didn’t say something, Luo Jianing would be able to pin the blame for pushing her on her. Luo Jianing was a master at pretending to be pitiful and always acted weak in front of others to gain sympathy.
The people present didn’t look pleased after hearing Ning Lingyu’s words. First, Ning Lingyu had never lied before, and everyone knew that she usually yielded to Jianing, so this was likely true.
Second, the matter with the Qiu family, as Ning Lingyu said, was just a joke made when everyone was together and wasn’t meant to be taken seriously. Besides, Ning Lingyu was also present at the time, and the Qiu family had never said they were formally betrothing their child to any family.
More importantly, Luo Haotian felt that his daughter was only fifteen years old; wasn’t it too early to consider these matters?
If what Ning Lingyu said was true and such tactics were being used to harm others, it would be a question of character, which was something Luo Haotian could not tolerate.
Luo Haotian then looked at his wife, who had reddened eyes, and asked, “Why didn’t you mention what Jianing said before she fainted when we arrived?”
Ning Xueling looked up and said, “What do you mean? I wasn’t there at the time; I only came out of mom’s room when I heard their cries of alarm. Jianing only said that Lingyu pushed her before she fainted.
I don’t know the details of what happened. I’m not sure if what she said is true. We should wait until she wakes up to clarify the matter. Of course, I didn’t mention it because I was afraid of causing a misunderstanding between the two families.”
She was already very upset about the blood type mismatch issue, so when Luo Haotian questioned her, she snapped.
Luo Haotian thought she was speaking harshly because she was worried about their daughter’s feelings, so he didn’t take it to heart.
Instead, he placed his hand on her shoulder and said, “Xueling, you don’t need to worry too much. Jianing will be fine. As for how exactly she fell, I’ll ask her when she wakes up.”
Having served several years as a reconnaissance soldier in the military, he believed that if Jianing lied, he would be able to tell.
He sighed, glanced at Lingyu, and thought of Qiu Shaoyang. Deep down, he didn’t believe his daughter would lie.
Ning Lingyu noticed her uncle’s gaze and made a startling suggestion: “No one in the family has been there, so why don’t we report this to the police? I’m sure they can find out the truth.
After all, right now it’s just my word against Jianing’s. Uncle, you probably don’t want to believe that Jianing is lying, but I don’t want to bear this accusation either. I don’t want my father to be shamed or for people in the neighborhood to gossip.
So I think letting the police handle it would be best. That way, it would be fair to all of us.”
Luo Haotian did not expect his niece to be so sensitive and said, “I don’t disbelieve you, I just can’t accept it.”
He couldn’t accept that the daughter he had loved for more than ten years could have such a character. If what Lingyu said was true, how could he face Jianing in the future?
Ning Lingyu said, “I think it’s best to report this to the police. I don’t want to be falsely accused for no reason. I’ve had enough of this since I was a child.”
This statement made the expressions of the elders unpleasant. Having family matters brought to the police wasn’t something to be proud of.
Luo Siyuan approached Ning Lingyu and said, “Xiaoyu, don’t be like this. We don’t mean to blame you.”
