Chapter 48: The Well Water Attracts Fish
After a few encounters, those who tried to find fault with Luo Qiao no longer dared to gossip. The key was to work hard. Luo Qiao didn’t push it too far, usually leaving half an hour early at most. Leaving any earlier would make her stand out too much.
The village wasn’t as strictly managed as it was a few years ago. Every day, women who finished their tasks early and recorded their work points would go home, so Luo Qiao didn’t attract much attention.
Her body had improved thanks to the well water from her space and her daily exercise routine. Moreover, she had been eating well and taking care of herself, but she was still young and needed to pace herself. She only did enough work to earn seven work points each day and didn’t take on any extra.
By doing this, she showed the villagers that she could support herself, which gave her a good reputation and made things easier.
After turning in her tools at the team office, she headed home, grabbed her basket, and walked towards the Daqing Mountain.
Halfway up the mountain, she collected a lot of fresh shepherd’s purses. After making a loop, she managed to hit a wild chicken with a stone, making the trip worthwhile.
Seeing that it was getting late, she decided not to go further into the mountain. She glanced into the depths of Daqing Mountain, thinking it would be nice if the team had another holiday soon so she wouldn’t have to ask the captain for leave.
Not far ahead, she noticed some movement. She walked quietly and discovered two rabbits. She carefully put down the basket, but she still made a bit of noise.
The rabbit was very alert, so Luo Qiao had to exert a lot of effort to catch one. If not for her agility, she might not have caught it at all. Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a female rabbit.
After looking around and seeing no one nearby, Luo Qiao cautiously placed the rabbit into her basket and then stored it into her space. It was better to be cautious in everything she did.
Passing by the edge of a pond, Luo Qiao suddenly had an idea. She wanted to see if the well water from her space could attract fish. If it worked, she could make some fish bait herself when she got back. This way, she could openly catch fish for meals in the future.
She had heard from villagers that there were fish in this pond, but they were quite cunning, even harder to catch than those in the big river. Luo Qiao thought it would be great if she could catch a few, so she could possibly transfer them to the pond in her space.
After checking around to ensure no one was nearby, Luo Qiao extended her hand into the pond. Concentrating, she tried to control a bit of well water to flow from her fingers, but the pond showed no reaction at all.
It seemed the water from her space didn’t possess such miraculous powers. She sighed disappointedly and prepared to leave, getting ready to head back down the mountain.
Just as she turned around and bent down to lift her basket, she caught a glimpse with the corner of her eye of a moving shadow under the water near the edge of the pond. Luo Qiao stared at it for a moment, then suddenly realized her current posture.
Quickly standing up straight and turning towards the pond, she finally noticed it was a batch of fish. Good heavens, this was quite surprising. If someone with ichthyophobia were here, they would definitely faint from fright.
It took Luo Qiao a while to react. She hurriedly found a safe spot by the edge of the pond and reached her hand into the water to draw the fish closer to herself. This would make it easier to transfer them into her space.
Regardless of whether they were big or small fish, Luo Qiao was indeed feeling a bit afraid now. She feared the fish might actually bite her since her hand was still in the pond.
She also feared being discovered in this unscientific scene, which could lead to unnecessary trouble.
So after quickly transferring a batch of fish into the pond in her space, Luo Qiao stopped. She threw a few fish onto the shore directly and prepared to finish up.
She had heard someone coming down from the mountain, but she didn’t dare to call them over. According to villagers, this pond was quite deep. Seeing that most of the fish had already dispersed, if she wanted to catch more, she would have to go into the water herself.
