Wen Jin’s predictions were spot on. After Xiao Zhongshan and Wei Changhai returned defeated once again, the Emperor’s rage could no longer be contained.
Crash!
The teacup was violently thrown, shattering into pieces on the floor.
“What does Yan Qing want to do?” Yan Chen’s cold voice resonated from the study, each word carrying a chilling frost, “Is she planning a rebellion? Is Yan Qing plotting a rebellion?!”
The guards outside the study kept their heads bowed, the Emperor’s fury sending shivers down their spines.
“Your Majesty, please calm down!” The palace attendants within the study all prostrated themselves, faces pale, afraid to even breathe.
Yan Chen’s expression was as cold as ice, his voice dripping with malice, “Is Yan Qing planning to rebel?”
The attendants remained silent, fear palpable in the air.
Yan Qing was truly too audacious!
Exiled in Zhuque City for ten years, it was expected that she would reflect on her actions, do good deeds, redeem herself from her inherent sins. Instead, she seemed to have grown even more defiant.
The dignity of the Emperor brooked no challenge.
Yan Chen’s voice was icy, “Summon Wen Jin to the palace!”
“Y-Your Majesty…” Wei Changhai spoke cautiously, “Wen Jin has reported sick leave.”
Yan Chen, now recalling Wen Jin’s sick leave, furrowed his brow in displeasure, “Didn’t I send for the imperial physician? What did the physician say?”
Wei Changhai kept his head down, “The physician was unable to see Wen Jin.”
Emperor Yan Chen fumed, “At such a critical moment, is he deliberately avoiding coming to share the burden, wanting to stay out of trouble?!”
His father had praised Wen Jin’s reliability, but he always harbored an inexplicable fear towards Wen Jin, much like the fear towards the “Lone Star of Calamity”!
His instincts were proven right.
When he reprimanded Yan Qing, Wen Jin would intercede for her on one side and make excuses for her on the other. Now, when he needed him to strategize and advise, he was nowhere to be found!
What was he thinking?
“Your Majesty.” Lu Guozhong knelt beside him and spoke up, his face pale and sickly from yesterday’s injuries, his voice cold and weak, “Why not let the Prince Regent handle this?”
Yan Chen glanced at him, his expression dark and silent.
Yesterday, when the courtiers suggested involving the Prince Regent, he was furious. But today, with Lu Guozhong mentioning it again, he found the idea feasible.
Having the Prince Regent deal with Yan Qing, whether successful or not, would entail no loss for him. If they both suffered losses, it would be even better for him to benefit.
Calming his anger, he sat back on his chair and declared, “Summon the Prince Regent to the palace.”
“Understood.”
Wei Changhai received the decree and quickly excused himself, hurrying out of the palace towards the Prince Regent’s residence. Having to deliver decrees twice in one day to such formidable figures, he, as the imperial attendant, was truly on edge.
The Prince Regent, Yan Cang, was even more formidable than Princess Yan Qing herself.
Luckily, this time he was not stopped at the gates.
“Emperor requests my presence in the palace?” Yan Cang was in his study reading, he raised his gaze slightly at the news, “What is it about?”
Wei Changhai returned nervously, “F-for… for the matter concerning the Ninth Princess…”
“The Ninth Princess has been granted the title of Princess Chang” Yan Cang reminded coldly, “Do I need to remind you how to address her?”
“Wretched servant, wretched servant!” Wei Changhai hastily slapped himself twice, bowing apologetically, “The Emperor wishes for the Prince Regent to come to the palace to discuss matters concerning Princess Chang.”
“What has Yan Qing done?” Yan Cang inquired.
Wei Changhai hesitated.
The intelligence network in the Prince Regent’s residence was more thorough than that of any noble, how could they not know what had happened? But given the question from the Prince Regent, he had no choice but to answer, “Master Xiao was caught in an illicit affair at the Red Swallow Pavilion by the Ninth… Princess Chang. The woman he was with has been killed, and Master Xiao was taken back to the Princess’s residence and is currently… detained in the dungeon there…”
Yan Cang’s face, usually reserved and dignified, now seemed to be covered in a layer of frost, showing his detachment and indifference, “The late Emperor left an edict that when the Emperor fully recovers, I shall relinquish the regency. If Yan Qing has make a mistake, the Emperor will handle it as he sees fit. I will not interfere.”
“Understood, Your Highness.” Wei Changhai smiled awkwardly, cautiously adding, “However, the Emperor has just ascended the throne, and there are many matters that could benefit from the Prince Regent’s guidance.”
“There is nothing to guide.” Yan Cang buried himself in his documents, his tone indifferent, “Xiao Jinghan is about to marry Yan Qing, yet dared to engage in an affair just before the wedding, being caught red-handed. His disrespect has reached its peak. How Yan Qing chooses to deal with him is her prerogative. If this had happened in an ordinary household, an immoral man could be thrown into a pigsty.”
Wei Changhai’s face froze, “But…”
“Xiao Jinghan’s moral character is corrupted. Yan Qing’s decision not to castrate him is already an act of extraordinary mercy.”
Wei Changhai felt a chill run down his spine and wished he could kneel before Prince Regent Yan Cang on the spot.
“Prince Regent, I seek your advice.”
He’s been sent out twice in one day. Will the Emperor lash out and have him executed?
Yan Cang remained silent for a moment, “There are ways.”
“I’m all ears.”
“Turn a blind eye.” Yan Cang stated calmly, “Let her do as she pleases, no need to interfere.”
Wei Changhai froze. Was this the Prince Regent’s solution?
“Aren’t you leaving yet?” Yan Cang frowned, his tone stern, “Do I need to escort you out?”
Wei Changhai’s expression changed, hastily excusing himself, “I dare not, I will take my leave now.”
Back in the palace, Wei Changhai respectfully relayed the Prince Regent’s words to the Emperor. Yan Chen’s anger, momentarily subsided, surged back as he clenched the teacup tightly.
“Turn a blind eye?” Yan Chen gritted his teeth, “Does that mean I have to endure if I can’t find a solution?”
Wei Changhai was on the verge of tears, shivering involuntarily, “Th-the Prince Regent did indeed… say so…”
Yan Chen closed his eyes, his inner fury boiling.
Thinking of Wen Jin’s sick leave, the Prince Regent ignoring it, Xiao Zhongshan’s cautiousness… Yan Chen couldn’t help but feel the urge to unleash his wrath.
This Emperor was helpless against a mere princess!
