At seven o’clock in the evening, the city lights began to twinkle.
Outside the Gu Group building, at the end of the workday, Gu Yu came out of the company. The security guard opened the car door, and after Gu Yu got in, the black Bentley slowly drove onto the avenue.
Gu Yu didn’t usually work overtime easily. He had just returned from a business trip abroad today, but a lot of work had piled up in the company in just one week, and he had been busy non-stop until now before heading home.
The top chat in his WeChat was a message sent by Ji Linglu an hour ago. The little princess said she was cooking at home and waiting for him.
Gu Yu leaned back in his seat and flipped through his phone with one hand, smiling softly—his little princess was still soft-hearted, and no matter how angry she was, she couldn’t help but feel sorry for him.
Then, he opened a video, which had been sent by the nanny at home during breakfast.
In the video, Ji Linglu was sitting on a stool with her legs crossed, scrolling through her phone. Gu Mo leaned over to watch, and then fed his mother spoonfuls of food, one for him and one for her. Ji Linglu’s lazy voice after a good night’s sleep came from the electronic device, making his heart tingle slightly.
Gu Yu didn’t know how many times he had watched the short ten-second video throughout the day. It seemed that watching it once could slightly relieve the thought of wanting to hold this person in his arms, but the result was that it only intensified the feeling.
After a few times, Gu Yu looked up and gave an address. The driver responded and turned the car around.
He knew in his heart that it was a milk tea shop that the president’s wife liked, and it wasn’t far, but driving home from there would take a detour that wasn’t too short or too long.
He bought milk tea and desserts and turned around to go home.
It was rush hour, and vehicles were shuttling back and forth on the avenue. The bright streetlights on the side of the road shone through the car window. The driver followed the traffic flow while also observing the boss’s expression in the rearview mirror.
After a whole day of work, there was a slight hint of fatigue between Gu Yu’s eyebrows. He was closing his eyes to rest, and the driver opened the player at the right time, and comfortable and quiet pure music flowed out slowly.
However, in that second of looking up, a dazzling glare of light accompanied by the sharp sound of brakes all around came straight at them. The driver squinted subconsciously, and quickly turned the steering wheel sharply to avoid the out-of-control truck in front. The Bentley swerved into the right lane in a distorted arc!
Gu Yu was shaken by the turbulent car, frowned and opened his eyes. His phone happened to ring, and the screen showed an incoming call from “Wife.”
“What’s wrong?” Gu Yu looked ahead, while picking up his phone to answer.
The air conditioner was on in the car, and the temperature was kept at a comfortable level. Even so, the driver was so frightened that he broke out in a cold sweat: “It’s nothing, the truck in front seems to be out of control—”
His voice suddenly stopped abruptly.
Boom—
At the bustling intersection during the evening rush hour, an out-of-control truck that ran a red light crashed into the conspicuous black Bentley in front, and then the vehicles were like dominoes that were pushed down one after another, and the sound of the impact resounded through the end of the street!
It was silent for a full minute before everything returned to silence. The next second, the sound of screams exploded from the surrounding crowd—
Warm liquid dripped from his forehead, blurring his vision. The sharp sound of sudden braking and collisions penetrated his eardrums, and the screams surged out from all around like a flood. His hand felt the slight vibration of the phone.
The last thought Gu Yu had before he passed out was: What will happen to Ji Linglu if I die?
“He’s not even answering my call…”
Ji Linglu came out of the kitchen, put the last dish on the dining table, and muttered to the phone that was repeating “No one is answering,” “What’s going on, Gu Yu…”
She gave up on continuing to call him repeatedly, turned around and took out a bottle of red wine from the glass island, and the moment she opened it, a rich aroma of wine quickly filled the air, making her dizzy.
She sniffed in satisfaction and took out a goblet.
The phone on the marble table vibrated, and a real-time news item from the city popped up: “Traffic accident at the North Street intersection, multiple vehicle rear-end collision…”
Ji Linglu glanced at it, but didn’t take it to heart.
Before she could finish pouring the wine, a phone call came in. It wasn’t Gu Yu. She continued her actions, and somewhat absentmindedly held the phone to her ear, “What’s wrong?”
The next second, her whole body froze.
“Crack—”
The glass wine bottle shattered on the ground, making a harsh sound. Glass shards flew past Ji Linglu’s feet, silently cutting the bare skin on the back of her foot. Bright red wine spread wantonly on the floor, soaking her fair feet. The red and white colors were particularly glaring, like blood.
“…What did you say?” Ji Linglu’s throat seemed to be choked by something, and her voice was trembling: “Who? Who had a car accident…?”
Ji Linglu rushed to the hospital, and went straight to the seventeenth floor under the guidance of the butler.
She came in a hurry, even wearing house slippers on her feet, and she hadn’t even had time to change the dress she was wearing. Bright red wine stains were scattered on it, and an haute couture dress was ruined like this, but she didn’t even notice it at this time.
The entire floor had been surrounded by bodyguards, and the doctors with solemn expressions and hurried steps in the corridor made the scene look a little scary.
At the end of the corridor, relatives and friends who had received the news stood outside the operating room. Gu Yu’s parents, Gu Shanhai and Zhou Yun, were surrounded by the crowd, their expressions heavy.
When Ji Linglu saw the three words “Operating” lit up, her legs went weak, and she almost knelt down.
“Linglu—”
Liang Yan saw her first, and strode from the crowd to Ji Linglu’s side to support her, and took off his suit jacket to put it on her.
Ji Linglu felt that her throat was terribly hoarse, and the voice she spoke with effort was low: “Brother… how is Gu Yu?”
Liang Yan looked at her, his eyes filled with undisguised heartache: “They’re still trying to save him.”
Zhou Yun, usually a dignified and elegant wealthy lady, also had red eyes at this moment, obviously having just cried. She took Ji Linglu’s hand and pulled her to sit down beside her.
“How could this…” Ji Linglu opened her mouth, but the sound didn’t come out successfully.
Liang Yan’s face was also not good-looking, and he frowned tightly: “It’s been less than an hour since they went in, and we’re still waiting for the situation. We’ve already invited the best doctors in the country to come over. He’ll be fine, don’t worry.”
