Chapter 47: Leaving the School
“Hello, I’m Song Chengjun, Captain of the B City Security Base Patrol. Are there any other survivors in the school?”
Others didn’t step forward, so Song Chengjun, being from the official base, naturally did.
Upon hearing that Song Chengjun was from the B City Security Base, the teachers and students’ eyes lit up.
Although it was the first time they had heard of a “Security Base,” the name clearly implied an official organization.
They had been waiting for this moment for so long—this was exactly what they had been hoping for.
“Yes! After the zombie virus outbreak, we gathered all the survivors in the school cafeteria. Right now there are around one or two hundred students there. Did you come specifically to rescue us?”
Song Chengjun fell silent at this question.
They hadn’t come specifically to rescue anyone.
In fact, if it weren’t for the invitation from Chu Jiangyue and Shen Zhigui’s group of five, they probably wouldn’t have passed by here today.
Though the truth was harsh, he didn’t want to deceive the people.
The silence from Song Chengjun quickly made the teachers among the power users understand the situation.
Though a bit saddened, they could understand.
This was a school with teachers, students, and staff totaling around two to three thousand people, yet only a hundred or two had survived.
With such a massive horde of zombies, it was understandable that they wouldn’t rush in to rescue people.
As long as the outcome was good, the process didn’t matter.
“Stop talking. There are still many zombies in the school. If we keep talking, more will come, and that will be a problem.”
Although zombie cores could restore powers, another high-intensity battle would be too much for their bodies.
“You’re right. I’ll organize the other teachers and students to come out and leave with you.”
No matter what the situation outside was, being able to leave the school was already their greatest fortune.
Chu Jiangyue and her group followed several teachers and students toward the cafeteria.
Because they feared zombie attacks, the cafeteria doors had always been tightly shut.
Now, with some of the zombies outside cleared, there wouldn’t be many more for a short while—this was their best chance to leave.
The teachers and students reached the cafeteria door and tapped in Morse code. Not long after, someone inside opened the door.
“Teacher Lu, you’re back!”
“Quick! Organize the students to leave. Don’t waste time!”
Lu Hua’an didn’t wait for the doors to fully open before speaking urgently.
“What?”
The teacher who came to open the door was momentarily stunned, unable to believe it.
“Hurry! The path from the cafeteria to the classroom building and school exit has already been cleared of zombies. Now is the best time to leave the school. If you delay, the zombies will gather again, and it’ll be hard to get out!”
Lu Hua’an didn’t expect Song Chengjun and his team to carve out another path just for them.
“Okay, I’ll organize them now!”
Though still a bit dazed, she trusted Lu Hua’an and immediately began organizing all teachers and students into a formation to prepare for departure.
The other students were confused at first, but following their teacher’s instructions was instinctive. Once Lu Hua’an ordered formation, the students quickly complied.
The other teachers simply needed to walk along with the student formation.
“Let’s go!”
“Teacher, did Cheng Yu and the others succeed?”
Some students had realized what was happening.
“Now is not the time to discuss that. Just follow orders!”
The teacher organizing the departure wasn’t aware of the exact situation, but since Lu Hua’an instructed her to prepare the students for leaving, she did so.
Once all the teachers and students exited the cafeteria and saw Lu Hua’an’s group along with Chu Jiangyue’s team, their eyes immediately welled up.
They had endured in the cafeteria for who knows how many days, nearly losing hope.
Now, someone suddenly told them they could leave—how could they not be moved?
Seeing everyone coming out, Song Chengjun led a few subordinates, positioning them at the front, middle, and rear of the formation to protect everyone within the perimeter.
However, their numbers were still limited, so they needed Lu Hua’an and her group to assist with the escort.
Chu Jiangyue had long completed her task of collecting 100 zombie cores. Seeing the two hundred people emerging from the cafeteria, she showed little outward emotion.
Many of the teachers and students noticed her presence, but no one asked questions, and Chu Jiangyue didn’t bother explaining.
“Boss Chu, can I take them to the Jianglin Hotel to settle them?”
According to Lu Hua’an, there were around one or two hundred teachers and students here. The B City base was too far, while the Jianglin Hotel was closer.
Moreover, Song Chengjun thought that once they experienced life at the Jianglin Hotel, they probably wouldn’t want to go to the base.
After all, life at the base might not be any better than at the hotel.
“The hotel doesn’t have enough rooms. You can take them there to rest, and for those who want to stay, they can if rooms are available.”
Because Song Chengjun had previously brought a batch of Security Base personnel, the first building of the hotel was full, and the second building already had occupants.
Before new rooms became available, she couldn’t arrange accommodation for everyone at once.
Hearing Chu Jiangyue, Song Chengjun felt a little regretful.
“It’s fine. Let them decide for themselves later.”
If possible, he would have loved for everyone to stay at the Jianglin Hotel, but current conditions didn’t allow it.
The group, with the two hundred teachers and students, moved as quickly as possible toward the school gate.
Occasionally, one or two zombies leapt out, but Shen Zhigui and the others handled them.
The students all looked at them with admiration. As fellow power users, how could their school’s awakened students and teachers not be as strong?
“Big brother, what’s this hotel you’re talking about? I want to go home. Can you take me home?”
Zhu Lanan had somehow ended up beside Song Chengjun and, in a sweet voice, asked while requesting her wish.
“Where is your home?”
If it was in the same direction as the Jianglin Hotel, he wouldn’t mind escorting her.
The only question was whether anyone was still at her home.
“My home is in Jinyu Bay. Big brother, please take me home. I don’t want to stay in a hotel!”
Seeing that Song Chengjun hadn’t refused, Zhu Lanan pressed her luck, insisting that he take her home.
Song Chengjun frowned slightly. Jinyu Bay was not in the same direction as the Jianglin Hotel—it was actually the opposite direction.
“Your home is in the opposite direction from the hotel. Sorry. Follow the main group to Jianglin Hotel first, and then decide where to go.”
Song Chengjun couldn’t leave everyone else behind for the sake of one person.
Zhu Lanan hadn’t expected to be refused, and tears immediately welled up.
She truly wanted to go home. She had never suffered like this before.
“Big brother, just take me home. I’ll have my parents pay you. We have money!”
