You Open Your Heart To Me, And I Hide My Secrets From You: 4

The three of them had no appetite at night, so they ate very little. Then they double checked the door locks and cabinet doors, and after confirming that they were secure, they all went to rest in bed.

The dormitory’s layout had a bed above and a desk underneath. Each person with their own loft bed. Jiang Song had just climbed onto her bed when she saw Lin Shengsheng following after her.

She asked doubtfully, “You…”

Lin Shengsheng interrupted: “I want to sleep with you.”

Jiang Song, who was used to living and sleeping alone, felt somewhat resistant. She said, “Two people will be too crowded, I can’t sleep well.”

Lin Shengsheng lay on the stairs, her big watery eyes looking very pitiful. She said eagerly, “But I’m scared. Didn’t we always sleep together before? Darling1, don’t you love me anymore?”

Jiang Song’s temples throbbed twice, feeling helpless. To avoid being noticed, she could only compromise, “Okay.”

Lin Shengsheng climbed up happily.

Shen Jia, who was the most frightened today, took a look at the two people huddled together, wrapped the quilt around tightly, and hugged herself.

“Shen Jia, you should go to bed early too. We’ll see how the situation is tomorrow. The school will definitely not ignore us.” Lin Shengsheng did not forget to comfort Shen Jia before going to bed.

“En.”

Perhaps because it was her first day of entering this strange game, Jiang Song found herself unable to fall asleep quickly. She was still thinking about what had occurred inside the bus, and she still couldn’t understand how she had been inexplicably drawn into this game.

As Jiang Song thought into the night, she fell asleep. And Lin Shengsheng, who was wrapped around her like an octopus, also began to breathe softly.

The next morning, Jiang Song woke up with a start. Her first reaction was to check the time- nine o’clock. After panicking for three seconds, she realized that she didn’t have to go to work today because her dormmate’s tentacle-like arms wrapped around her was a reminder of her current reality.

The fear of being late suddenly disappeared, and she no longer had to endure it from then on. Jiang Song inexplicably felt a sense of… relief.

It doesn’t seem to be a bad thing. No matter how scary the game is, can it be as scary as being scolded by your boss and not daring to resign?

Lin Shengsheng rubbed her eyes and was awakened by Jiang Song’s movement: “Are you awake?”

Jiang Song glanced at the person beside her: “Yeah.”

Then she looked at the bed next to her and didn’t see Shen Jia. Jiang Song instantly became alert and grabbed the frying pan. It was the only weapon in her hand. She carefully leaned down and saw Shen Jia standing on the balcony.

Shen Jia walked in and greeted the two of them: “You two slept so soundly.”

Jiang Song finally saw the dark circles under her eyes, and she breathed a sigh of relief: “You got up so early.”

“The situation is like this outside, how can I have the mood to sleep?” Shen Jia sighed.

Lin Shengsheng started flipping through her phone: “All we can do now is wait for rescue. Everyone is in trouble now.”

Shen Jia also knew this fact, but she still couldn’t feel at ease.

Jiang Song noticed Shen Jia’s anxiety, but she didn’t have the energy to comfort her.

##

On the second day of entering the game, they occasionally heard roars coming from the corridor. Jiang Song and her friends kept quiet at all times and did not dare to make too much noise.

At night, the water flowing out of the pipe was a little black, and there was some viscous, unknown liquid. Jiang Song turned off the faucet and stopped using it. The water she drank yesterday was the reserve water that had been connected in advance, and the remaining water was enough for later use, so she wasn’t too worried.

However, a message sent on her mobile phone made her a little confused. At six o’clock in the afternoon, her in-game mother sent her a message, asking about her current safety status, and then asked her to hold on for a few days, saying that her relative was nearby, and she had asked him to come to the school to rescue her and go back together.

Jiang Song blushed from shame2. The college was full of zombies, and it was difficult to even protect their own self. Who would be so kind as to save an unfamiliar relative?

Jiang Song had no choice but to ask the other party.

[Jiang Song: Who is it? Why did they come to save me? It’s so dangerous.]

[Mom: He’s your cousin-uncle3, Shen Tingsi. Anyway, he’s from the army. He held you when you were little. He’s pretty good. I’ve told him where your dorm is. Wait for him to bring you back. Be good.]

Jiang Song didn’t expect the in-game experience to be so real. Not only was she given a virtual identity, but even her family members were prepared so perfectly.

Jiang Song ignored it. Her goal was to find a shelter. She didn’t want to fail, and she didn’t want to know the consequences of failure. As for relatives of her game identity, forget it.

As usual, Jiang Song was preparing to rest at night. At about two o’clock in the morning, she was awakened by a crisp and rhythmic sound. She suddenly woke up and, realising that someone was knocking on the door, she broke out in a cold sweat instantly.

…Zombies will knock on the door too???!

She woke Lin Shengsheng up, and Shen Jia, who was a light sleeper, also woke up. The three of them were a little scared. Jiang Song got out of bed first, walked to the cabinet at the door, held a frying pan, and listened to the noise outside.

Lin Shengsheng and Shen Jia also held weapons and were ready at any time.

In the dark room, there was only a ray of moonlight filtering through the gap in the curtains. Jiang Song didn’t dare to breathe and listened carefully to the movement outside the door.

“Wuwuwu…4” A weak voice carried with a hint of pleading: “Is there anyone inside? Open the door for me, please… I’m so scared… It hurts so much…”

Jiang Song realized that someone outside was calling for help.

There was also a continuous knocking sound on the door, one after another, crisp and a little spooky, which was particularly clear in the silent night. Jiang Song was really afraid that the noise would attract other zombies.

No one knew whether the person outside was infected or not, and what risks would be taken if they rashly let him in. They all tacitly remained silent and pretended that no one was there.

But the person outside seemed to be getting more and more frantic, and began to bang on the door, “I wasn’t bitten, open the door! Open the door! Let me in!”

The twisted and crazed-sounding voice startled Jiang Song, and at the same time, she heard more footsteps. Jiang Song whispered, “Come over quickly, block the cabinet!”

Lin Shengsheng and Shen Jia rushed up together, and their three thin bodies leaned against the cabinet at the same time.

The roars of the zombies instantly condensed at the door. A powerful impact made Jiang Song’s body tremble, and then she immediately pushed forward again.

The girl’s movements outside the door really attracted the zombies within the corridor, and they all crowded at the door of their dormitory. There was a possibility they could break through this fragile door at any time.

Her screams were terrified and plaintive. She begged the zombies not to bite her, but Jiang Song clearly heard the sounds of tearing and chewing.

Her back slicked with cold sweat, the door shook from the impact of the zombies, and even a narrow gap was opened. She did not dare to relax.

Lin Shengsheng and Shen Jia also gritted their teeth and persisted in the fight for a long time. No one dared to lower their guard. As time passed, the shaky door gradually stabilized.

Jiang Song breathed a sigh of relief quietly and looked down. Blood was flowing in through the crack of the door: red, sticky, bloody. The smell of iron.

A person was bitten to death by zombies with just a single door separating them from that same fate.

  1. 寶子(bǎo zǐ) is a term of endearment for close individuals in this context. Like how friends can call each other babe or baby jokingly. I’ve been translating 寶貝 as ‘baby’ and 寶 by itself as ‘babe’ whenever Lin Shengsheng says this to Jiang Song. But baozi is like a different variant of that. I wasn’t sure if I should continue to translate this and other variants as ‘baby’ as well, or use words like ‘darling’, but I decided to use darling so it wouldn’t sound as repetitive lol. ↩︎
  2. ‘汗顏’ means sweating due to inner shame or humiliation, and generally refers to a psychological state of shame or embarrassment. This term metaphorically represents the psychological feeling of shame through physiological reactions, and can also be used to describe shame-inducing individual behavior or group misconduct. ↩︎
  3. 表小叔 – Used to refer to your paternal side’s younger male cousin/brother-in-law. So they’re not closely related blood-wise, and might not even have any blood relation at all, depending on the family relationship if they are related by marriage lol. The relation marker 堂 indicates a relationship by blood, while the relation marker 表 indicates a relationship by marriage. So it’s safe to assume that they have no blood relations. Don’t worry, as a Chinese, I’m also confused by some of the name greetings as well, but I tried to ask my mum and she says that the word 表 means that the relationship is surface level/not closely related ahaha. If you want to learn more about the family relationship terms, maybe you can check out https://littlechinesethings.wordpress.com/2019/01/26/relatives-in-cantonese/ or Google it lol  ↩︎
  4. ‘Wuwuwu’ is a Chinese crying onomatopoeia ↩︎
