The police were answered by the air filled with smog.
They approached cautiously and opened the black bag to check. They found that it was actually herbs.
Everyone was stunned. What did this mean?
No one dared to be careless; what if there were bombs hidden in the herbs? They called their off-duty colleagues to come and inspect each bag one by one.
The situation was so bizarre that it quickly alarmed Chief Ling.
The herbs were brought back to the police station. Chief Ling who was woken up in the middle of the night, looked at the courtyard full of herbs and nearly dropped his jaw.
However, he quickly thought of something and immediately instructed, “Get the experts from the Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Pharmacology over here.”
The officers did not dare to slack off and drove out to fetch the experts overnight.
Chief Ling returned to his office. “Did you get a clear look at who delivered the herbs?”
“No, it was hard to see at night, and the smog was thick. They were sitting in the car, so we couldn’t see them clearly.”
The officer on duty thought for a moment. “However, they seemed to be wearing gas masks. At first glance, they looked like skulls. I was startled and thought they were going to launch a biochemical attack.”
Chief Ling glanced at him, “Have you been watching too many movies?”
“Chief Ling, I’m not joking. Many people out there have psychological issues, and social retaliation is commonplace. The smog virus is a respiratory infection. If it breaks out, who knows how many people will spread it. We need to be prepared.”
Chief Ling’s sharp gaze swept over, “Put your mask on!”
The officer tightened his mask. “Chief Ling, should we track down those two trucks?”
Two anonymous letters of complaint had almost worn out in Chief Ling’s hands over the years. What was the point of tracking down the trucks and imprisoning the drivers?
After careful consideration, Chief Ling said, “No need. Let’s wait for the experts to confirm the herbs are safe.”
Smog has caused panic among people, especially with the upgraded version of smog.
As expected, Jiang Ning had another nightmare. She dreamed that Huo Yishen’s lungs were all vomited out and it almost filled the washbasin.
Not just him, even their dog.
The dog, with a mouth full of blood, kept clawing at the ground, suddenly speaking to her, “Poop scooper, I can’t breathe. Give me your lungs!”
Jiang Ning was frightened and opened her eyes suddenly.
Huo Yishen turned on the bedside lamp. “What’s wrong?”
Jiang Ning patted her chest, “Nothing.”
As soon as she got up, Qin Chuan called urgently, “Sister-in-law, Xiao Mu has a fever and cough, rapid breathing, and is alternating between hot and cold. Is he infected?”
Jiang Ning directed him over the intercom, “How high is the fever?”
“Almost 40 degrees.”
“Did he take any fever-reducing medicine?”
Qin Chuan had some, but it was years out of date, so he didn’t dare give it to his son.
Jiang Ning thought for a moment, “Use warm water to wipe his body and soak his feet in mugwort water. Have him drink plenty of hot water.”
Not only Qin Chuan, but even sharp mouthed monkey contacted her; his child was sick as well.
It seemed it was no coincidence. The smog virus spread quickly, and children were the first affected, as their immune systems were not as strong as adults.
Huo Yishen went to the backyard and returned with a grim expression. “The poultry seem to be affected too. Some chickens are wheezing.”
It might not necessarily be an infection, maybe just physical discomfort, but no one could be sure. What if it really was an infection that could spread to humans?
After careful consideration, Jiang Ning made a decision. “Let’s slaughter them all.”
The poultry were Doudou’s pride, and each one carried emotional significance. Hearing the news, she was heartbroken.
So, the chickens, ducks, and geese were all killed and placed into black plastic bags.
Three years of hard work had resulted in a considerable number of poultry. Jiang Ning was reluctant but thoroughly disinfected each plastic bag layer by layer, sealing them in five or six layers of bags before placing them into airtight plastic storage bins and storing them in the space.
In case of a shortage of supplies one day, maybe they could be eaten.
As for the Xiao Bai, Da Hui and their six children, they have been providing rabbit meat to Jiang Ning for years.
After so many years, it’s impossible to say there are no feelings involved.
Whether it’s due to good health or the effects of the experimental drugs, they don’t show any signs of wheezing and leisurely nibble on the hay.
In the end, she couldn’t bring herself to be cruel. Instead, she cleaned and disinfected the inside and outside of the poultry shed, left enough hay and water, and left their fate to destiny!
Jiang Ning’s plan was disrupted.
She originally planned to assist Ma Guangnian and Professor Li at the Chinese Medicine Research Institute after the eternal night ended. When the smog arrived, she would secretly place the medicine at the police station door and use her work connections to subtly suggest its use, thereby shortening the research process.
The reason she didn’t give the medicine directly to the research institute was that she didn’t know their procedures well enough and feared it might be used for other purposes. Also, if a large batch of mysterious herbs suddenly appeared, they might report it to the Yuecheng police station, and if a thorough investigation was conducted, it might not be easy to hide.
After much thought, she decided to give it to Chief Ling.
Chief Ling understood very well what the medicine was for and would even help cover it up. Being as smart as he is, he probably saw through it a long time ago but just didn’t say anything.
In any case, he is a very remarkable person.
Despite these thoughts, Jiang Ning couldn’t rest easy without seeing Chief Ling hand it over to the research institute himself.
So, she decided to go out again.
She went out openly, wearing a protective suit.
On her way out, she tossed a large bag of herbs to Qin Chuan’s villa and asked the father and son to try soaking them in water.
Not just Building 49, but Zhang Chao and Lu Yu, as well as sharp mouthed monkey, also received some.
The herbs were delivered remotely to avoid contact.
After cutting and mixing the herbs evenly, it’s hard to distinguish the specific prescription unless you are an expert.
After delivering the herbs, she went to the two-bedroom apartment she had bought.
With sharp mouthed monkey and the others gone, the place felt much more spacious. The members of the Aoyuan weren’t as crowded, and some quick-witted ones took the opportunity to rent the vacated apartments, avoiding the situation of two families squeezing into one apartment with no room to turn around.
They got along quite well. Sharp mouthed monkey and others knew that it was not easy for these people. They only collected a token rent and regarded it as looking after their house.
The only requirement was that they take good care of the apartment.
The Yang family lived next door. Hearing the noise, they immediately opened the door, holding a knife in hand.
Seeing the figure in a protective suit, fully covered, Yang Jie called out warily, “Who are you?”
Jiang Ning couldn’t help but laugh. “It’s me.”
Yang Jie was surprised. “Sister Jiang?”
He hadn’t seen her for three years and was very happy. “Are you and Instructor Huo doing well?”
They had heard about what happened in the villa area during the eternal night and were both terrified and deeply conflicted afterwards.
The security team captain had been quite decent to them. In the face of challenges, he often stepped forward when there were difficulties with the property owners. If the owners hadn’t truly gone too far, who knows… the tragedy might not have happened.
No matter what, despite the security team captain’s smooth and experienced demeanor, he eventually let them go and compensated them well. His cruelty and violence were brought out by disasters and human calamities.
“We’re okay. I’m here to check on the apartment.”
With smog everywhere, she acknowledged his concern but kept the conversation short.
Zhang Chao and Lu Yu had lived there for a while and kept the place quite clean.
Standing by the window of apartment 302, Jiang Ning could see the police station entrance, though visibility was not very clear due to the smog.
She took out her binoculars and carefully observed…
