Chapter 23 Ye Wuyou who eats skewers
Seeing how stingy Ling Yu was being, Ye Wuyou was genuinely furious. She quickly finished off the little chicken meat in her bowl, even drank all the soup clean, then slammed down her bowl and chopsticks before storming away from the table.
Ling Yu saw that she was throwing another tantrum but didn’t explain himself, letting her leave the kitchen fuming.
“Stingy bastard, miserly dog, shameless! Won’t even let people eat their fill. Petty man! One day when I make it big, I’ll sit in front of you and eat meat just to make you watch!” Ye Wuyou cursed all the way back to her room. Once she locked the door, she slipped straight into her space and began searching for food. Luckily, she had collected a lot of semi-prepared meat products in her previous life.
In a corner, she found some pre-prepped pork belly and pig knuckles. She tossed them straight into the microwave and pressure cooker inside the space. Before long, fragrant pork belly and knuckles were ready. Afraid Ling Yu and the others might notice, Ye Wuyou pulled them out and, not caring that they were piping hot, stuffed them into her mouth in big bites.
Only after she was fully satisfied did she come out of the space again. Lying on the bed smugly, she thought: Won’t let me eat meat? Hah, I’ve got plenty of ways. I don’t care about that measly food. Later, when I have good stuff, I definitely won’t share it with them.
After the dishes were washed, Ling Yu carried hot water into the room for bathing. Hearing his movements, Ye Wuyou turned to glare at him angrily and asked,
“Didn’t you just take a bath yesterday? Why are you bathing again today?”
From the original owner’s memories, Ye Wuyou knew that in the countryside people rarely bathed so often, so she couldn’t help but ask.
“What, you’re going to control me just because I like being clean?” Ling Yu didn’t even turn his head, just rummaged through the chest for clean clothes.
“Tch, who wants to control you.” She was only embarrassed because he was bathing in the same room as her, that’s all. Of course, she didn’t say that aloud. Forget it, she thought, if he’s not embarrassed, why should I be? Besides, with his build, even if I accidentally see something, I’m not the one losing out.
Still, despite her words, while he bathed, Ye Wuyou didn’t dare turn her head even once, afraid she might accidentally see something she shouldn’t.
After washing, Ling Yu also scrubbed his clothes. It wasn’t that he was overly fussy—after a whole day running around the mountain, he’d sweated and felt sticky and uncomfortable if he didn’t clean up. Once he finished, he hung his clothes outside to dry, then came back into the room.
Seeing Ye Wuyou sitting stiffly, not daring to move, a mischievous gleam flashed in his eyes. Then he suddenly stripped off his upper clothes and slipped under the quilt.
Feeling the movement behind her, Ye Wuyou thought he was already dressed. When she turned around, she caught sight of his solid chest. Her face instantly flushed red; she quickly turned her head back and snapped,
“You—you shameless man!”
“What did you say? How am I shameless?” Ling Yu, seeing her shy expression, propped his head on his hand lazily and asked.
“Why aren’t you wearing clothes?” Ye Wuyou fumed, shocked he even dared to ask.
“Because I’m going to sleep. It’s more comfortable without clothes. What, are you shy?” he said as if it were the most natural thing.
“No, even if you’re going to sleep, you have to wear clothes.” Ye Wuyou ignored his teasing and demanded seriously.
At that, Ling Yu suddenly pulled her into his arms.
“What are you shy for? You’re already my wife. Isn’t it normal for a married couple to sleep without clothes?”
“Let go of me, get away! I’m telling you, I won’t be with you. One day I’ll leave here—I don’t want to be your wife. I had no choice back then.” Ye Wuyou’s face burned even redder as she struggled in his grip, especially when she felt his strong chest and his strength pinning her down.
“If you won’t be with me, then who will you be with? Don’t forget, I spent 200 yuan to buy you. We’re already legally married, your name’s on my household register. And since you came here, you’ve been sleeping in the same bed as me. Your reputation’s already ruined. What now, you still think you can leave?” Ling Yu tightened his hold as he spoke.
“I’ll pay you back the money. Even if we’re married, we can divorce. As for reputation, I don’t care,” Ye Wuyou retorted.
“Then what do you care about?” Ling Yu suddenly asked seriously, his eyes full of curiosity.
Meeting his probing gaze, Ye Wuyou frowned slightly before answering,
“I don’t care about much. Just being alive, and having enough to eat—that’s all. Everything else doesn’t matter.”
Hearing this, Ling Yu suddenly laughed. Leaning close to her ear, he murmured persuasively,
“Then stay here. I’ll make sure you live well, and you’ll always have enough to eat.”
Ye Wuyou froze for a moment. Looking into his earnest eyes, she suddenly felt he wasn’t joking this time—very unlike his usual self.
“Bullshit! I don’t believe you. You wouldn’t even let me have two bites of chicken today, and you dare say you’ll feed me? As if! I don’t believe a word from your mouth.” Remembering his stinginess at dinner, Ye Wuyou grew angry again. She refused to trust a single thing this man said.
Hearing Ye Wuyou say that, Ling Yu realized she had misunderstood his good intentions. He didn’t argue with her anymore. Instead, he pulled her tightly into his arms and said, “Go to sleep. If you’re fine tomorrow morning, I’ll make you something delicious. And in the future, we’ll often go into the mountains and see if I can hunt some game for you.”
Ye Wuyou didn’t quite get what he meant. What does he mean by ‘if I’m fine tomorrow’ then he’ll give me something good to eat? Could it be that what I ate today will cause problems?
She found out soon enough, in the middle of the night, squatting alone in the outhouse, full of regret. Even though she now understood Ling Yu’s well-meant intentions, she still couldn’t help cursing under her breath. If it was for my own good, why couldn’t he just say so directly? Instead, I thought he was being stingy and secretly ate from my space. Now my stomach can’t handle all that greasy food, and I’ve ended up with diarrhea.
That night, Ye Wuyou barely slept, running to the outhouse several times. Seeing her like this, Ling Yu even suspected that she had sneaked some meat behind his back. But when he checked the wild chicken he had left aside and found it untouched, he was puzzled.
Since he was worried she might be weak from the diarrhea, the next morning he didn’t dare reheat the chicken. Instead, he cooked some porridge and added a little broth to it.
“Look at you, your stomach is way too fragile. You only ate a little bit of meat yesterday, and now it’s gotten this bad. From now on, you’ll have to control it a bit.”
Hearing that she couldn’t eat meat, Ye Wuyou felt utterly hopeless and didn’t even bother to argue.
