Chapter 292: Need a Daughter (7th Update)
But how could she say something like that in front of the girl’s mother? Ye Wenxin forced a smile, then saw Madam Yu’s expression turn serious again. “What will it take for you to agree to marry Qiao Ni?”
“What will it take for you to stop sacrificing yourself for your daughter’s happiness?” Ye Wenxin countered.
Madam Yu shook her head decisively. “In my eyes, my daughter will always come first.”
“Exactly, just like you have your determination, I have mine; Qiao Ni alone isn’t enough for me.” Ye Wenxin shook her head in refusal.
Madam Yu frowned even more deeply, clearly displeased by Ye Wenxin’s words. But this was how love worked—Ye Wenxin didn’t like Qiao Ni. While she might develop feelings in the future, right now, Ye Wenxin simply didn’t like her.
“What if I join as well?” Madam Yu gritted her teeth, but Ye Wenxin doubted her ears.
Was this something the serious Madam Yu would say? While Ye Wenxin’s face showed disbelief, Madam Yu’s lips pressed against hers.
With a naivety that belied her appearance, Madam Yu tried hard, willing to sacrifice herself for Qiao Ni’s happiness. But it was just a light kiss, and she quickly pulled away.
It seemed that kiss represented nothing more than her determination.
“If you swear to treat Qiao Ni well, I can also…” Madam Yu’s expression was resolute, but tears streamed down her face.
“Why do this? You should also consider yourself, shouldn’t you? Your daughter will eventually leave your side, but you shouldn’t mistreat yourself like this.” Ye Wenxin looked calm, but she was gripping the blanket tightly to avoid losing control and making a mistake.
“I’m already used to it.”
“But you have someone you love, right? Don’t you want to do something about it?” Ye Wenxin asked again. Madam Yu’s love was so extreme that it was both shocking and confusing, making it hard for Ye Wenxin to feel anger.
Madam Yu sacrificing herself for her daughter’s happiness left Ye Wenxin uncertain whether to feel moved or amused.
She very much enjoyed Madam Yu’s kiss just now, thinking Madam Yu was a genuinely beautiful married woman, and being here in Green Isle Manor, where she could have an affair with a married woman right on this bed, stirred a bit of desire in Ye Wenxin’s heart.
At that moment, she also understood Fatty’s mindset—how the idea of having an affair with a married woman could be so psychologically stimulating.
“If she discovers something, there will be even less chance for me.” Madam Yu’s attitude became more dejected, as if she understood how difficult it was to deal with her sister, and thus knew what her remaining fate would be.
If Liu Churan uncovered the truth about the past, Madam Yu might meet an early end. But she believed that Liu Churan wouldn’t make things difficult for Qiao Ni or Ye Wenxin.
“Why do you sisters always speak in riddles?” Ye Wenxin was frustrated, and suddenly felt a bit anxious as well.
Madam Yu, however, remained silent, looking at Ye Wenxin with a calm gaze. She continued, “Don’t worry about my affairs. I only need to know your answer.”
“I can’t do it!” Ye Wenxin responded decisively. Madam Yu stood up gracefully, but her expression remained somewhat stern.
“Wait.” Seeing this, Ye Wenxin worried that Madam Yu might do something foolish, and she couldn’t help but call out to her.
“It’s too late to change your mind now,” Madam Yu said without turning back, her emotions clearly conflicted. Once she calmed down, she realized she had indeed been making an unreasonable demand.
Ye Wenxin already had too many options around her, and was unlikely to choose Qiao Ni. Qiao Ni wasn’t a cultivator and would eventually die; her age and status were not as remarkable as those of others.
Madam Yu didn’t blame Ye Wenxin; she only blamed herself for not being able to provide Qiao Ni with better opportunities and a better future. But this was Madam Yu’s final request to Ye Wenxin, if it was not meant to be, then it truly was not meant to be.
She sighed, but then heard Ye Wenxin’s voice faintly, with a hint of awkwardness and uncertainty, asking, “No, what I meant to ask was, Madam Yu, do you need another daughter?”
Madam Yu was taken aback, and then couldn’t help but laugh.
At first, it was a gentle laugh, but soon it grew louder, and who knew what she could be thinking, leaving Ye Wenxin even more puzzled.
“Madam Yu, is my idea that strange?”
“No, it’s just that it reminded me of some past events.” Madam Yu smiled, suddenly recalling someone from years ago who had introduced her and Liu Churan’s relationship rather erratically.
“Ran’er is truly my adopted daughter, not the kind of daughter you’re thinking of.”
Now, looking at the child of that old acquaintance, Madam Yu suddenly felt a sense of closure. She had indeed lost to Liu Churan, but she had won her own dignity and things that Liu Churan could never imagine.
Looking at Ye Wenxin, a flash of fervor appeared in Madam Yu’s eyes, but it quickly transformed into calmness. She opened the door, noticed the slight drizzle outside, and said, “It’s getting cold. Take care and stay warm, Miss Wenxin.”
With that, Madam Yu quickly left.
Ye Wenxin didn’t understand her meaning. She lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep. After some thought, she decided to leave Green Isle Manor and went to find Yingchun, the Winter Jasmine’s courtesan.
This would be the third time Ye Wenxin met this exotic beauty. The first time was after she left Green Isle Manor to catch up on sleep; the second was due to Madam Yu’s introduction, which almost led to her taking advantage of the courtesan; and now, here she was for the third time.
The courtesan didn’t seem surprised by Ye Wenxin’s sudden intrusion and greeted her, “Miss Wenxin, you’re here again?”
Ye Wenxin climbed in through the window, skillfully closing it behind her, and smiled. “Yes, I’m here again.”
The courtesan, evidently accustomed to Ye Wenxin’s impertinence, glanced at her bed. “I’ll start making the bed then.”
Ye Wenxin couldn’t help but think the courtesan’s actions were too practiced. If it weren’t for the fact that the room only held her scent, Ye Wenxin might have suspected that many others came to the courtesan just to sleep as she did.
“Eh?”
The courtesan paused her bed-making and looked at Ye Wenxin with a puzzled expression. “Didn’t you come because you were having trouble sleeping again, Miss Wenxin?”
Ye Wenxin let out a wry smile and joked, “Can’t I come to chat about romance with you?”
The courtesan laughed even harder: “If it were really about romance, Miss Wenxin wouldn’t be looking for me. My mistress is much more beautiful than this humble courtesan.”
“Hehe, who says? Miss Yingchun is very beautiful too.” Ye Wenxin teased, eliciting a faint blush on the courtesan’s face. Yingchun, the courtesan, looked shy as she fidgeted with her hands. “Then would Miss Wenxin like to finish what we didn’t last time?”
Facing Yingchun, an eager courtesan with no strings attached, Ye Wenxin’s lips curled into a smile. “I’d be delighted to oblige.”
