Chapter 298: Yes-Man Ye Wenxin (1st Update)
“But you don’t need to worry too much. This time, due to our excessive numbers in the tournament, our sect is reshuffling our quota. When the time comes, just follow behind your senior brothers and sisters like a tag-along.”
Ye Wenxin listened, speechless, realizing that during the two months she had been away, the Azure Wings Sect had reshuffled the twenty slots for the secret realm.
This reshuffling kicked out all the unworthy disciples, and unsurprisingly, the true disciples took all the slots.
Ye Wenxin didn’t understand the reasoning. Jin Xiaoqin continued with a meaningful tone. “The actions of the demon sects are becoming more pronounced. Ordinary disciples wouldn’t survive against them. More importantly, the secret realm being opened this time contains treasures an ascendant had left behind, so the sects are placing great importance on it.”
Ye Wenxin nodded before saying, “Does that mean I won’t even be able to pick up any scraps?”
Jin Xiaoqin showed a disdainful expression and smacked Ye Wenxin’s butt. “You really think you can survive? If I hadn’t strongly recommended you to the Sect Master, you probably wouldn’t even have had a chance to enter.”
Ye Wenxin was not surprised. The Sect Master of Azure Wings Sect had long figured out Ye Wenxin had hired a mercenary to be her stand-in, and for safety reasons, had not intended to let her risk her life.
After hearing this, it turned out that the person dragging her to risk her life was Jin Xiaoqin.
“Master, maybe my spot should go to someone else. I’m a bit scared.” Ye Wenxin began to show weakness again. Jin Xiaoqin threw her a disappointed look. Ye Wenxin immediately shut her mouth and thoughtfully began to massage Jin Xiaoqin’s shoulders. Only then did Jin Xiaoqin’s expression soften.
After a good while of massaging, Jin Xiaoqin seemed to remember something. “By the way, something major happened at the sect recently.”
“Bigger than me acknowledging Madam Yu as my godmother?” Ye Wenxin pretended to be astonished, recalling everyone’s expression when she entered the Azure Wings Sect proper.
Jin Xiaoqin rolled her eyes at Ye Wenxin. “Your little drama did cause quite a stir, but that’s about it. Since you got along well with that Qiao Ni girl, it was only a matter of time before Madam Yu had her eye on you. But what I’m talking about now is definitely a big deal.”
Their conversation never had the feel of a master-disciple relationship; it was more like that of ordinary friends. Ye Wenxin, a bit tired from massaging, stopped her actions and sat beside Jin Xiaoqin, waiting for her to reveal the big secret.
However, knowing the way of the Azure Wings Sect, anything they consider a big deal usually turned out to be trivial, like a breakthrough in cultivation. Ye Wenxin wasn’t too concerned, but she saw Jin Xiaoqin smile mysteriously.
“It hasn’t been publicly announced yet, but soon, everyone in the sect will know,” Jin Xiaoqin added, when she saw that Ye Wenxin didn’t seem too impressed by the so-called big news.
“Ooh, how amazing,” Ye Wenxin praised without any emotion. Jin Xiaoqin had planned to keep her guessing, but seeing Ye Wenxin’s lack of interest, she finally revealed the secret.
“Fairy Fengya has finally chosen another true disciple. Can you guess who it is?” Upon hearing Fairy Fengya’s name, Ye Wenxin got goosebumps, recalling many stories that had happened between them.
It was hard to believe that in just two months, Fairy Fengya had decided to take on another disciple. Yet, soon enough, Ye Wenxin found it inevitable.
Everyone already knew that Fairy Fengya’s attempt to recruit a disciple had been rejected, so it was natural that the Sect Master would try to fill this gap somehow, and make Fairy Fengya take on another disciple.
Ye Wenxin’s first thought was Long Qing’er, Fairy Fengya’s most diligent suitor. It was quite possible that, during their battle in the ring, something might have sparked between them.
Jin Xiaoqin’s lips curled into a slight smile, her expression hinting for Ye Wenxin to guess.
“It’s Senior Sister Long Qing’er.”
Jin Xiaoqin’s expression changed subtly. She realized that every time she tried to keep her in suspense, Ye Wenxin managed to guess the truth.
From Jin Xiaoqin’s expression, Ye Wenxin confirmed she was right and felt that Long Qing’er becoming Fairy Fengya’s disciple was well-deserved.
“But why make such a mystery out of taking on a disciple?”
“Isn’t it because you humiliated Fairy Fengya last time? Although the Sect Master doesn’t say it, he cherishes Fairy Fengya dearly, and would naturally try to make amends. But he couldn’t out-argue me, so…” Jin Xiaoqin smiled, finally finding a bit of confidence.
Ye Wenxin completely lost interest in inquiring further. She was unsure how to describe her subtle feelings. Jin Xiaoqin glanced at Ye Wenxin a few times before asking, “Regret it?”
“No.”
“That’s good.” Jin Xiaoqin patted Ye Wenxin’s shoulder, then stood up. “Since you’re now my true disciple, and a member of the Hall of Teaching, start learning with me tomorrow.”
The topic changed so fast it left Ye Wenxin reeling. She thought of all the pending orders for pills and many other matters, but seeing Jin Xiaoqin’s expectant look, she chose to say nothing. She stood up and respectfully replied, “Yes,” then quickly left the room.
Life started to get busier. It wouldn’t change just because Ye Wenxin established a connection with Madam Yu. However, in recent days, Jin Xiaoqin had been diligently teaching Ye Wenxin. Despite her indifferent attitude towards Ye Wenxin’s survival, Jin Xiaoqin treated her very well, teaching her survival skills.
“If you can’t win, run. There’s nothing shameful about it.”
“A person only has one life; you can always make a comeback after many years.”
These were Jin Xiaoqin’s two favorite quotes, reflecting her aversion to competition. When it came to Fairy Fengya, however, this calm master would still lose her composure.
Whenever Ye Wenxin saw Jin Xiaoqin, it felt like she was witnessing her own daily struggles caused by Fairy Fengya.
Just like that, a week flew by, with Ye Wenxin trailing behind Jin Xiaoqin every day. Until one day, an invitation was delivered by a Secret Guard.
The invitation had gold trims and embroidered dragon patterns, a style only the imperial family dared to use.
“They’re really in a hurry, holding the apprenticeship ceremony right before the secret realm opens,” Jin Xiaoqin said as she looked at the contents of the invitation. It was an invitation from Long Qing’er, informing everyone to attend her apprenticeship ceremony.
Ye Wenxin also looked at the invitation beside her, thinking that the behavior was very much in line with Long Qing’er’s style.
She was still staring at the text, wondering if they were inlaid with gold, when Jin Xiaoqin closed the invitation, and turned to her. “Disciple, what do you think? Should we go?”
