75: Rainfall, Subduing the mutated black spider
“Taming people?”
Lin Zhiwei always felt that the man was hinting at her.
Yet she kept it off her mind.
After all, dwelling on something that disadvantaged her would only hurt her future performance.
“Alright, let’s go home.”
As Shen Yi spoke, he glanced at the mutated dog, whose injuries had healed a lot.
It seemed that as long as there was enough food, its recovery speed would accelerate.
What a powerful and perverse ability!
If Shen Yi possessed that skill, he would be practically invincible.
Right now, food was the last thing Shen Yi lacked.
As long as he ate, his wounds would heal, which felt amazing to him.
If he were not afraid of turning into a monster, he would really want to inject a tube of the genetic serum.
“Come to think of it, mutated animals don’t seem to feel extremely thirsty after a few hours of breathing the black fog the way we humans do, right?”
Walking back toward the compound, Shen Yi drank bottled water and suddenly glanced at the mutated dog.
Although the mutated dog also needed water, it did not have to rehydrate every so often like Shen Yi and Lin Zhiwei.
“Mm.” Lin Zhiwei nodded and explained, “According to my previous research, most mutated animals do not remain thirsty in the black fog, but after mutation their water intake does increase accordingly.”
“As for how they replenish water, they seem to drink their prey’s blood.”
“Then can they drink contaminated water?” Shen Yi asked another question.
“Most mutated animals can’t, though some do, but my research shows that long-term consumption of polluted water affects them as well.”
“So water sources really are the most important thing right now, vital to every living creature.”
Shen Yi murmured softly.
Fortunately, the first supply he unlocked was mineral water, otherwise he doubted he could have survived.
If he stayed out of the black fog, he could last a bit longer.
But if he had to live in the fog continuously, he would not last a day without 3 or 4 bottles of water.
Thinking about it, many more people were probably going to die…
Shancheng was slightly better; because of its terrain, it had many high-rises where people could temporarily avoid the black fog.
In flatland cities, if national rescue did not arrive, more than 80% of the population might die.
If possible, Shen Yi did not want that many deaths.
A world without humans brought him no benefit whatsoever.
Without a large population base, it would even be hard to find a woman who met the System’s standards later.
However, as long as survivors dared to go out to look for water, they probably could still find some drinkable sources.
Because Shen Yi had plenty of water, he had not studied that aspect.
But those who lacked water would surely band together to search for unpolluted sources, like bottled water in supermarkets or subterranean water, maybe well water?
He simply did not know whether groundwater was contaminated.
Logically, the black fog came from cracks in the ground, meaning it emerged from underground.
In that case, groundwater had probably been tainted long ago.
Still, that was only speculation, and Shen Yi could not be sure the fissures really led to the earth’s interior.
To sound a bit mystical, he even wondered whether the cracks connected to another dimension or plane.
After all, the black fog was far too eerie and mysterious, unlike anything Earth could produce on its own.
Of course, all of this was wild guesswork with no basis whatsoever.
He could only wait until he had enough strength to go down the fissure himself.
“Looks like it’s raining.”
As Shen Yi and Lin Zhiwei reached the compound gate, a fine drizzle suddenly fell from the sky.
This was Shancheng’s first rain in almost half a month.
Moreover, the rainwater did not appear to be polluted immediately and might be drinkable.
Naturally, Shen Yi would not risk tasting it.
But if the rain got heavier, ordinary people would have a new lease on life.
“If rainwater isn’t contaminated right away, could other cities be using artificial rainfall as their rescue method?”
Shen Yi pondered.
It was not impossible.
He even suspected that this sudden rain in Shancheng might itself be artificial.
But that was just conjecture.
Time to get down to business.
They arrived at the entrance of Building 6.
Before Shen Yi could say anything, the mutated dog suddenly stopped, its green eyes fixed on the upstairs window as a warning growl rumbled in its throat.
Apparently the silly husky, whose wounds had partly healed, could already sense the lurking danger.
“There might be a mutated animal upstairs!”
Lin Zhiwei stared at the building ahead and activated x-ray vision.
Soon, she saw a huge web in the middle floors, and on the web rested a rather large mutated black spider.
Even though Lin Zhiwei had seen many mutated creatures, the spider’s size still shocked her.
“How can an ordinary spider mutate to be this big…”
“Could it have experienced a second mutation like Little Ha?”
Lin Zhiwei whispered in delight.
She was eager to study this mutated black spider.
If it had undergone a second mutation, its research value would be tremendous.
“Little Ha, try to capture it alive!” Lin Zhiwei instructed the mutated dog earnestly.
The husky tilted its head, probably not understanding at all.
It did possess intelligence, but not much.
“I’ll lure it down; you direct Little Ha to ambush it,” Shen Yi said.
“Okay!”
The research maniac Lin Zhiwei nodded at once.
She would never let such good research material slip away.
Even if Shen Yi had not spoken, Lin Zhiwei would have tried to capture or kill it.
The corpse of a mutated creature was also highly valuable for study.
Next, Shen Yi teleported to the unit entrance, took out a Type 54 pistol from System Space, aimed at the resting mutated black spider through his Telepathy view, and squeezed the trigger.
“Bang, bang, bang…”
All the bullets struck the mutated black spider, but most did little damage.
One bullet, however, hit the spider’s eye squarely, and a sticky mass burst out instantly.
The mutated black spider let out a shrill screech; whether from pain or fury, all its legs moved at once as it sped downward.
Shen Yi deliberately waited until the spider saw him and drew all its hatred before teleporting backward.
The mutated black spider seemed unaware of the husky hidden in the fog and charged at Shen Yi as if it had to kill him.
“Little Ha, now! Go!!”
Seizing the moment, Lin Zhiwei waved her hand and issued the order.
The already watchful mutated dog pounced on the unguarded mutated black spider at once.
With a single paw it slammed the spider heavily to the ground; no matter how it struggled, it could not break free of the husky’s massive claw.
The mutated husky’s strength completely overpowered the spider.
Were the spider’s body not so tough, that slap might have squashed it into mush.
Seeing that, Lin Zhiwei immediately stepped forward, intending to study the mutated black spider at close range.
This was her first time encountering a creature that had undergone a second mutation.
Little Ha did not count, because Little Ha was an artificial product.
Unexpectedly, at that moment the mutated black spider, its many legs still struggling, suddenly opened its mouth and fired a white thread like an arrow straight at the completely unprepared Lin Zhiwei.
