A Guide to Raising a Demon Cub
A Guide to Raising a Demon Cub Chapter 29

Hilaire watched, taking out berries from his storage pouch and eating them.

Lucifer, beside him, observed the little demon intently watching the scene unfold, somewhat curious. “You’re not angry?”

Hilaire tilted his head, chewing. “Hm?”

“They let go of the food you shared. That should count as wasting food, right?” Lucifer found this type of food interesting – it actually cried for help and tried to run away.

“Not angry. Gave it to them anyway. Want more?”

The little demon didn’t mind. He had given it to them, so whether they ate it or played with it didn’t matter to him. He used to enjoy playing with these berries too – letting them run away, then catching them again to eat.

“A few more, please. Thank you.”

An angel and a demon ate berries together. The Archangel stared disbelievingly at the red puddle beneath his feet.

He killed an innocent life? What did he kill?

Angel: “You killed a berry!”

Archangel: “…”

He didn’t know if he was crazy or if these angels were. What did they mean, he killed a berry? He understood each word, yet why was the sentence so hard to comprehend when put together?

Only when those angels brought the other talking berries before him did he finally understand.

A cluster of chattering, crying berries – it was the Archangel’s first time seeing such strange things too. He looked at the little demon who gobbled half a berry with an “Aomph!” then stuffed the remaining half into his mouth.

This strange eating habit must be unique to demons.

Logically, he shouldn’t interfere, but such a young cub, how could he eat this kind of thing? Wasn’t this taking a life?

Angels loved peace, had low material desires, and possessed very calm and peaceful personalities. They respected life and rarely killed. Even during the great war a thousand years ago, they only fought back because the previous Demon King was too crazed and wanted the lives of the angel race.

And Eris, precisely because he understood the angels’ nature, felt reassured leaving the cub here. As long as their bottom line wasn’t crossed, angels would tolerate almost anything.

And their bottom lines were: first, their home and kin, and second, no wanton killing in their presence.

The Archangel thought for a moment, still feeling he should correct the little demon’s worldview from the start, not letting him become a cruel demon.

“Prince Hilaire, I feel you shouldn’t casually deprive other creatures of life just to satisfy your appetite. After all, every life is unique. Harming life for a moment’s greed is unacceptable behavior.”

The little demon didn’t understand, looking blank. “What?”

“I mean, you shouldn’t kill living things.”

“‘Living things’?” Demons usually spoke bluntly; this overly formal way of speaking was hard for the little demon to grasp. He was still wondering who “Living Things” was; he didn’t even know him, why kill him?

“What I mean is, you shouldn’t eat this kind of berry, nor should you eat other animals.” The Archangel frowned, looking towards the side. “And Lucifer, as an angel, how could you eat such a creature?”

Lucifer said nothing, smilingly and obediently putting down the berry in his hand.

The little demon understood now. He frowned, looking at the angel. “I can’t eat berries, and can’t eat meat either?”

“Yes. I believe we should respect every life.”

“But… I’m hungry.”

The Archangel looked strangely at the little demon. After all, the cub had just eaten the same amount as an adult angel; could he still be hungry after such a large portion? He thought for a moment. “Then I will bring you another plate of Source Water.”

The little demon stared at the Archangel in shock. Not only no meat, but he had to keep drinking water? Would every day be like this from now on?

Gazing at the Archangel’s determined expression, the little demon got angry. As someone who had eaten eight meals a day since hatching, even when trying to diet, he only reduced it by one meal; other times, he always ate his fill.

Moreover, the Demon Realm had abundant food of diverse varieties. Besides regular meals, he was often fed snacks by other demons.

So the little demon paid particular attention to eating; not only did he eat a lot, but every meal was different. Now, forget drinking water every day, he wasn’t even allowed to eat meat!

Hilaire glared at the Archangel, his mouth pouting high, his little fists clenched tight.

If this were the Demon King’s Palace and he made such a face, the other demons would have rushed over to comfort him long ago because terrible consequences would soon follow if they didn’t.

But now, surrounded by unfamiliar angels and the Archangel adamantly forbidding him from eating berries and meat, the demons weren’t here, Papa wasn’t here either.

Thinking of this, the little demon slowly tilted his head back, opened his mouth wide, and let out a deafening wail: “Waaaaah wah wah wah wah~~~”

Unlike his usual quiet cries, whimpers for attention, or silent tears, the little demon’s wails were extremely loud.

A cub’s voice was naturally high-pitched, and coupled with him deliberately raising the volume, the entire canteen seemed to shake from his crying.

The angels learned for the first time what “deafening” meant.

The Archangel tried to speak several times, but his volume couldn’t compete with the cub’s at all; his voice was instantly drowned out the moment he opened his mouth.

Hilaire cried heartbrokenly. At first, it was just loud wailing, but the more he thought, the sadder he became.

Papa wasn’t here, and the angels wouldn’t let him eat, they were mistreating him! Thinking this, tears streamed down, huge teardrops falling one after another.

“Wuwuwu ahhhhh~~~”

His voice was too loud; the angels felt their ears were about to break. Even angels passing by outside the canteen couldn’t help but peek in, wondering what on earth was happening to cause such a terrifying sound.

Lucifer: “Archangel, you made him cry.”

The Archangel was at a loss. He saw it, but he hadn’t done anything! He just offered some advice, asking him to learn respect for life! He usually spoke to other angels this way too!

“Speaking of which, if the demons found out their Little Prince was made to cry, and so heartbrokenly at that, I wonder if they’d attack out of anger? Perhaps the peace we’ve struggled so hard to maintain would shatter because of this, sigh~” Lucifer sighed.

The Archangel’s expression was complex. He quickly stepped forward, wanting to comfort the little demon, but the moment he approached, the little demon turned away, completely refusing to look at him.

Hilaire sat on the high stool without a backrest, so he could rotate 360 degrees on it. No matter which direction the Archangel moved, the crying little demon would immediately spin to the other side.

Lucifer: “Alas, looks like war is coming.”

Archangel: Will you please shut up!

Don’t be fooled by Lucifer’s good looks—no angel in the Celestial Realm was more beautiful—or his transcendent aura and perpetually smiling, detached demeanor. Sometimes, his words were truly venomous, always managing to make the Archangel extremely frustrated.

“Ahhhhhh!”

The little demon was still crying, his wails even managing to rise several pitches higher. More and more angels gathered outside, while the angels inside the canteen looked utterly miserable, all turning towards the Archangel. “Archangel, please comfort him quickly!”

“Yes, he’s crying so pitifully! His throat will be sore soon!”

“Speaking of which, he’s just a little demon; his eating habits are different from ours. It’s normal he can’t accept it right away. You were too hasty.”

“Yes, and demons seem to eat meat; maybe they’ll get sick if they don’t eat meat?”

Hilaire cried while listening intently with pricked ears. Hearing angels speak up for him, he immediately cooperated by wailing, “I want to eat berries! I want to eat meat! I want to eat cake!”

Usually, the Archangel lectured and advised adult angels. Even if they disagreed with his views, they could still communicate.

This was the first time he encountered a little one who cried after just a few words, completely impossible to communicate with! Even the other angels thought it was his fault!

What else could the Archangel do? He could only apologize in a low voice. “I’m sorry, I misspoke.”

The little demon, back still turned to him, didn’t turn around, but his crying softened slightly. “Tell me! What did you do wrong?”

He still had to say what he did wrong?!

Because of his high status and the respect he received from all angels, it was always the Archangel telling other angels off, making them reflect! This was the first time he apologized, and after apologizing, it wasn’t enough; he still had to reflect and state the reason?

He could only continue, “I shouldn’t have spoken to you like that. You are a demon; your eating habits are different from ours. I shouldn’t have imposed angels’ ideas onto you.”

Hilaire continued crying.

The Archangel felt helpless. He had apologized and reflected; why was he still crying?

Lucifer spoke up, “Archangel, you haven’t said yet whether he can eat those things in the future.”

Archangel: “Prince Hilaire can eat whatever he wants in the future. However, we truly do not have those edible animals here in the Celestial Realm.”

The crying stopped abruptly.

The sniffling little demon turned around, tear tracks still wet on his face, then looked at the Archangel with a blank little face. “I have.”

The little demon took things out from his storage pouch: a pile of screaming berries, a whole roasted demonic beast already prepared on a plate, small cakes, and other things he’d never seen before but could tell were various stir-fried or steamed limbs of demonic beasts.

The angels went from initial shock to staring collectively at the little demon’s storage pouch.

That pouch is clearly so small; how did he take out such a large platter of roasted meat from inside?

The little demon, eyes still red and swollen, declared, “I’ll treat you all to a meal.”

The angels politely declined, thanks but no thanks. Honestly, they always drank Source Water and had never eaten these things before. Just the thought of eating animal corpses made them feel queasy.

Hilaire didn’t insist either. If everyone didn’t like it, fine; he could keep it all to eat slowly himself.

Then he slowly turned his head towards the Archangel, offering him a crying berry. “Eat.”

He didn’t care if the other angels didn’t want to eat, but he frowned his little brow, stubbornly insisting the Archangel eat this berry. It felt like, since you forced me not to eat berries, I’ll force you to eat one too!

The Archangel refused. “I do not kill living things.”

Little demon: “It’s not living. It’s cooked.” (T/N: Its a wordplay. /shēng means life/living, but also raw/uncooked.)

Archangel: “…”

“As the Archangel, I must lead by example. I cannot harm life.”

The little demon couldn’t understand the connection between a berry and harming life. The reason these berries cried and screamed was just mimicry to protect themselves, just like some fruits smelled bad, some were sour, and others spicy.

The reason this type of berry was expensive was that they wilted within a day after being picked, losing their taste. So, they had to be eaten immediately.

And the Shadow Demon’s storage space kept food fresh indefinitely, which was why the little demon’s pouch had so much food.

Remembering the Archangel’s firm refusal to let him eat meat earlier, the little demon slowly tilted his head back, opened his mouth wide…

“He’s about to cry again,” Lucifer translated.

Archangel: … I see it.

“Alas~ Is war coming again?”

The Archangel compromised. “I’ll eat.”

Taking the berry from the little demon’s hand, the line-faced crying berry whimpered, “Wuwu, don’t eat me.”

The Archangel looked pained, hesitating for a long time before finally putting the berry into his mouth, then quickly swallowing it down. For the peace of the Celestial Realm, I must endure.

Hilaire: “Yummy?”

Archangel: “Ye-yes, delicious.”

Just a bit hard to swallow.

Hilaire stated expressionlessly, “You lied. You didn’t chew just now.”

Archangel: …

Lucifer slowly turned his face away, propping his forehead with one hand, his shoulders shaking uncontrollably. It was the first time he had seen the Archangel suffer such a setback. Truly amusing.

Fortunately, Hilaire didn’t intend to pursue it further. Since the other had eaten, he wouldn’t press the issue.

The other angels didn’t eat the food he brought out, and he himself was full from drinking water, so he put the table full of food back into his storage pouch. Since there was nothing else to eat here, he could only eat the food he brought himself; perfect for eating slowly later.

Afterward, the Archangel returned, looking dazed. The task of showing Hilaire around and taking him back was handed over to Lucifer.

Leading the little demon on a slow stroll through the City of Light, Lucifer was quite conscientious, walking slowly while introducing various buildings and their histories to Hilaire.

Although he didn’t understand much, Hilaire still nodded cooperatively, pretending he understood everything perfectly.

When they walked past another canteen entrance in the City of Light, Lucifer recalled the earlier incident and couldn’t help but smile. “Are all you demons like this? Doing whatever you want, disliking other demons or angels telling you what to do?”

Hilaire looked up at the smiling Lucifer; his sapphire eyes were even prettier than the sky. He nodded, then asked somewhat puzzledly, “Of course! Aren’t you guys?”

Demons lived as they pleased, care less of others’ opinions, disliking being told what to do. If they disagreed, they’d just fight it out.

Hilaire, though a very small cub, was indeed a genuine demon. Plus, his status in the Demon King’s Palace was supreme; everyone indulged him.

Naturally, he did whatever he wanted. If other demons thought he was wrong, they would sometimes reason with him.

He was a very well-behaved little demon; if he thought the other was right, he would naturally change, just like coming to the Celestial Realm this time. Demon King Papa had explained a lot, breaking down the reasons and consequences for the little demon, which was why he finally agreed to come here.

But the Archangel’s reasoning made no sense! He always ate meat; demons in the Demon Realm always ate meat!

Why was he forbidden from eating it just because he came to the Celestial Realm? The other hadn’t tried to reason with him, hadn’t told him why he couldn’t do it, just wanted the little demon to obey his words.

Naturally, he would get angry.

Lucifer didn’t answer. The Celestial Realm was indeed peaceful, and angels were kind, but their words and actions were constrained.

What could be done, what couldn’t—there were corresponding rules. One couldn’t act outside the rules; otherwise, they would face severe punishment.

And he had eaten those berries today too. If the Archangel hadn’t been too shocked and dazed, he probably would have punished him on the spot, making him reflect.

But the Archangel also ate a berry today. If he wanted to discipline Lucifer later, he’d have to lead by example, punishing himself first before punishing him. Thinking this, Lucifer looked down at the little demon. “You were really amazing today.”

Hilaire didn’t know why he was suddenly being praised. “Thank you?”

“The Archangel has never suffered such blows before.”

Since meeting the little demon, the Archangel had been constantly hit by various setbacks, looking much more haggard than usual.

Hilaire thought Lucifer was talking about the canteen incident. He frowned, clenching his fist. “If he’s like that again next time, I’ll strike him again!”

If he doesn’t let me eat meat next time, I’ll cry again!

Lucifer couldn’t help chuckling. “Is that so? But I guess the Archangel probably won’t dare boss you around anymore.”

After all, this lesson was already enough for him to digest for a long time.

The City of Light wasn’t very large. Afterward, Lucifer took the little demon back to his residence. Seeing the little demon enter the door, he was about to leave, but the little demon suddenly rushed out, looking shocked. “You’re not staying with me?”

Lucifer: “What?”

“Just me staying here alone? Do I have to sleep by myself at night too?”

Back in the Demon King’s Palace, Hilaire always had demons accompanying him, even at night. After all, counting from hatching, he was only three years old this year.

Lucifer had indeed forgotten this. Previously, they assumed the Demon King’s son was an adult demon, naturally not thinking he needed company. But now, the other party was a cub, and so small; needing company was normal.

Thinking the Archangel was probably still mentally scattered from today’s unexpected events and must have forgotten this, Lucifer sighed. “Alright then. I’ll stay with you tonight first. We can ask the Archangel again tomorrow.”

Hilaire nodded, finally feeling reassured.

However, Lucifer didn’t go inside with the little demon. He spread his pure white wings behind him and flew up to the second-floor balcony. “I’ll stay here tonight.”

The pure white wings unfurled, broad pinions shimmering with pearlescent luster, sacred and beautiful. The little demon stared, stunned. He watched the other gracefully fly to the second-floor balcony and couldn’t help but gasp, “Wow!”

So beautiful! I want wings like that too!

He turned his head to look at his own small black wings. They fluttered twice but still couldn’t lift him.

Hilaire turned back into the house disappointedly. He climbed up to the second floor, saw the angel casually leaning against the balcony railing, and trotted over deng deng deng. “Come inside!”

“No need, I’m fine here.”

Rejected, the little demon didn’t insist further. Instead, he took off his shoes, climbed onto the five-meter-wide bed, and rolled back and forth on it.

After a short while, he felt bored and looked towards the balcony. “Lucifer, what are we doing tomorrow?”

“According to the previous arrangement, classes start tomorrow.”

“Classes?” Hilaire didn’t expect he’d have to attend classes even in the Celestial Realm. “Then what do we do in class?”

“Nothing much, just learning some knowledge and principles of the Celestial Realm. Oh right, there are also tea appreciation and flower planting courses.”

The little demon lay prone on the bed, propping his chin with both hands. “I plant flowers in the Demon King’s Palace too! Very pretty flowers!”

And he remembered Nick seemed to have brought a flower for him. Hilaire turned his head and scanned the room. It didn’t seem to be here; probably still in Nick’s shadow.

Lucifer crossed his arms. “Is that so? Then that course might be much easier; no need to start from seeds. I remember besides these, there are also practical combat courses, but I don’t know if they will still hold them.”

After all, those were previously intended to show the Demon King’s son their strength. Now that the Prince turned out to be a cub, how could they conduct combat classes? They couldn’t possibly fight such a small demon, right?

“Combat?” Hilaire thought for a moment. “I’m not afraid! I’m very strong!”

His weapon was the trident; he could absorb and release magic just like Papa! Everyone said he was very strong! With just this move, many demons couldn’t beat him!

“Seems the courses the Archangel prepared are quite to your liking,” Lucifer said casually, closing his eyes.

When evening came, the little demon adamantly refused to go to the canteen to drink water, instead inviting Lucifer to eat with him. He took out food from his storage pouch.

Lucifer didn’t refuse, accepting the invitation to eat with the little demon. Whether it was screaming berries, cake, or roasted demonic beast meat, he accepted it all well.

After eating, the little demon started washing up. Despite being small, he already knew how to wash his face and brush his teeth himself, as well as take off and put on clothes. Changing out of the black robe into pajamas, Hilaire lay down in his favorite Hellhound-patterned quilt and said goodnight to the angel.

Lucifer also washed up there, but afterward, he still stood on the balcony, in a position where the little demon could see him just by looking up.

Once Hilaire’s breathing evened out and he fell asleep, Lucifer also leaned against the railing and closed his eyes to rest.

Meanwhile, in another part of the City of Light, a female angel was preparing tomorrow’s lessons. Having heard about the Archangel’s encounter today and the deeds of that Demon King’s son, this female angel sternly prepared even more lesson plans, determined to awe the Demon King’s son into submission on his very first day of class.

This female angel was named Edena. Like Archangel Gabriel, she was highly respected in the Celestial Realm. She was responsible for the educational courses of all angels; every angel was her student.

Although she now had to teach a Demon King’s son, whose habits and principles were completely different from angels’, she wasn’t afraid in the slightest.

Even if that Prince was terrifying, she would rely on her rich teaching experience and righteous principles to educate him properly!

Edena had been preparing various teaching materials all day, so she hadn’t gone out to welcome the Demon King’s son.

Plus, she was usually very strict, completely lacking the Archangel’s approachability, which made many angels afraid of her.

Consequently, no angel had told her what the real Demon King’s son looked like.

She did overhear in the canteen in the afternoon that the Demon King’s son forcefully pressured the Archangel into eating their food, causing the Archangel to return looking dazed and heavily struck, not even emerging from his room all afternoon. (In reality, he was just exhausted from the day and sleeping.)

Thus, Edena prepared to immediately put the Demon King’s son in his place during tomorrow’s class, letting him know not every angel was good-tempered, while simultaneously correcting the demon’s erroneous principles.

Whether in knowledge reserves or combat prowess, she was sufficiently confident she wouldn’t lose to any demon. She had already made foolproof preparations for this.
