A Kiss Under the Summer Sky Chapter 26

Chapter 26: Not Eating Together Anymore

“……”

Sheng Yize looked at her leisurely.

Sang Sui felt guilty, stammering, and finally could only explain, “Hmm, I was just hungry.”

The man was a bit surprised, glancing at the food on the table. Four meats, three vegetables, and one soup every day—was she really that hungry?

Sheng Yize furrowed his brows. “At your age… your digestion ability is that strong?”

Sang Sui reminded him, “I’m 18.”

The man’s fingers froze, and his gaze on her face became tinged with something deep and intriguing.

“I’ve become an adult.”

The girl’s expression was serious and earnest, as though she were telling him something important.

Sheng Yize stared into her eyes, and the girl’s round pupils were bright, carrying an almost imperceptible urgency.

“Sheng Yize,” she said, “I’m not the same naive girl from four years ago.”

Sheng Yize’s gaze darkened as his eyes involuntarily shifted to her face.

Compared to the first time she came to his house, this time she had the vivacity and grace of a young woman.

Her face, fair and rosy, was the vitality of an adult woman.

Sheng Yize averted his eyes, clenching his fist and coughing lightly.

“If you’re hungry, just eat.”

Sang Sui said nothing, picking up her chopsticks and starting to eat.

The man spoke little, especially when facing her. The times they had shared meals were more about sitting across from each other in silence.

Sometimes, he would respond when a topic was brought up.

Sang Sui felt a little down, not only because he still treated her like a child, but also because…

She vaguely sensed that his kindness towards her was merely out of gratitude for her saving him. It was a sense of duty, and nothing more.

After a bite of rice, Sang Sui noticed a chicken leg had appeared in her bowl.

She looked up.

Sheng Yize had placed the chicken leg in her bowl with the serving chopsticks, without looking at her, as if casually asking, “Have you felt any headaches recently?”

Sang Sui was momentarily stunned and shook her head. “No.”

“Previously, the doctor said the recovery period for a mild concussion is about seven days. Given the time, your concussion should be healed by now.”

Sang Sui lowered her eyes, vaguely understanding something.

“Tomorrow, you don’t need to come over to eat with me anymore.”

Sang Sui looked up at him, pursing her lips. “Wh-what happened?”

“You’re recovered.”

Her expression stiffened.

His meaning was clear—now that she had recovered, there was no need for her to keep eating those special nutritious meals prepared by the cafeteria chef.

“Mm, I understand.”

She put down her chopsticks, forcing a smile on her face.

“My concussion has healed. You don’t have to feel guilty or responsible anymore. There’s no need to ask the chef to make those special dishes. Honestly, I can eat the regular food from the cafeteria too.”

“Thank you for taking care of me all this time. You can just focus on your work. I’ll take care of myself.”

As she spoke, she nervously rubbed her thighs with her hands, took a deep breath.

“Well, I’m full. I’ll head back to the dorm now.”

With that, she grabbed her textbooks from the side and left in a hurry.

She was afraid that if she turned around too slowly, the tears that had been threatening to fall from her red-rimmed eyes would spill out.

She had already known that he was only doing these things because she saved him and he felt responsible for her injury. He was just repaying a debt of gratitude, nothing more.

But she still enjoyed the time spent alone with him during meals every day.

Even though it was quiet, it was the time that made her heart feel happy.

Since that day when she said they wouldn’t eat together anymore, Sang Sui truly stopped eating with him.

Back to the routine, every day after school, she would go with Lin Luoluo to the cafeteria for lunch.

Sometimes, if she ran into Sheng Yize, she would pretend not to see him and drag Lin Luoluo to eat somewhere else.

Sheng Yize, holding his meal tray, watched her pull Lin Luoluo away with her back turned and frowned slightly.

“Sheng Ge, are we heading to the company today?” Chen Yi came over with his meal tray and saw where Sheng Yize’s gaze was fixed, eyeing Sang Sui in the distance, looking suspicious.

He had noticed that they hadn’t eaten together these past few days, and Sheng Yize hadn’t asked the chef to prepare special meals anymore.

Chen Yi glanced sideways at him. “Did you have a falling out with Sang Sui?”

Sheng Yize gave him a sidelong glance and found a spot to sit with his tray.

Chen Yi walked over and sat down, noticing that Sheng Yize’s eyes were fixated on one spot.

Following Sheng Yize’s gaze, he saw Sang Sui and Lin Luoluo sitting there.

Chen Yi laughed, “How come you’re not eating together anymore?”

Sheng Yize turned his eyes away, not responding.

“How boring to eat alone. Come on!”

Chen Yi stood up, holding his tray with one hand and pulling Sheng Yize by the arm with the other, trying to drag him up.

Sheng Yize furrowed his brows. “What are you doing?”

“Come eat with them.”

“……”

Chen Yi dragged Sheng Yize along, peeking around to ask, “What are you guys eating?”

Sang Sui looked up, saw Sheng Yize, and without saying a word, grabbed her tray and turned to leave.

Chen Yi: “……”

The next day, military training began.

The night before, the class leader had sent a form in the class group, asking everyone to fill in their information, especially the emergency contact, which had to be someone close, like a family member or friend.

This was due to previous accidents during military training.

Some students with weaker health fainted, which was minor, but others with poor health didn’t report it to the school, resulting in serious accidents during military training.

Therefore, the school now paid great attention to students’ safety during military training, and several ambulances were already stationed at the school waiting for any emergencies.

Sang Sui opened the class group form and filled in all her information. When it came to “Emergency Contact,” her hand suddenly paused.

On the discharge form from the hospital, her emergency contact was listed as Sheng Yize.

However, this time, she no longer had the right to write his name.

But she had no close family or friends in Yun Jing, and her only relative was her mother.

Sang Sui thought for a moment, lowered her eyes, and wrote Yun Man’s name and phone number.

After filling it out, Lin Luoluo turned to ask her, “Sui Sui, who did you put as your emergency contact?”

“My mom.”

Lin Luoluo was surprised and leaned in, whispering, “Why didn’t you write Sheng Yize?”

“Why would I write his name?”

“He’s your brother, right?”

“We’re not really related.”

“……”

Well, now she understood.

They had fallen out.
