Chapter 27: Fever
In the school infirmary.
“Does it hurt here?” The female doctor gently pressed on the lower abdomen with her fingers, watching Sang Sui’s reaction.
Sang Sui lay on the bed, her face pale, biting her lip and nodding.
“Have you had cramps before?”
Sang Sui nodded again.
The female doctor stood up and removed her gloves.
Lin Luoluo quickly asked, “Doctor, how is Sui Sui?”
Just as the doctor was about to speak, hurried footsteps sounded, stopping at the door.
Both of them paused, looking toward the entrance.
A man dressed in a white shirt and black pants stood at the door, his gaze anxious, his chest heaving with each breath.
He must have been running too fast. The wind that had rushed into his white shirt dissipated as he stopped, leaving it loose against his body. His meticulously styled hair was also blown messy, with bangs falling over his deep eyes.
Even in a disheveled state, his extraordinary presence could not be concealed.
The female doctor spoke up: “Are you…?”
Sheng Yize?
Lin Luoluo’s eyes lit up, as if she had found a lifeline.
Sheng Yize steadied his breathing and walked in: “Is Sang Sui inside?”
Before Lin Luoluo and the doctor could respond, Sheng Yize had already walked over, lifting the curtain and crouching in front of her.
Perhaps due to the pain, Sang Sui curled up, clutching her stomach. Her face was as pale as a sheet, her delicate features drenched in cold sweat, her lips trembling, and her breathing shallow and labored.
She looked so fragile, as though a single touch could make her break apart.
Sheng Yize’s heart twinged, and when he reached out, he realized his hand was shaking.
He carefully placed his hand on her forehead.
She was burning again.
His voice was soft, careful: “Sang… Sang Sui…”
Hearing the voice, Sang Sui’s long lashes fluttered slightly. She slowly opened her eyes.
The familiar handsome face came into view. Sang Sui’s consciousness was fuzzy, but she still weakly called out, “Brother.”
The female doctor walked over and gave Sang Sui another injection. She then turned to the man beside her: “Are you her brother?”
“Yes. How is she now?”
“She’s experiencing menstrual cramps, a fever due to heatstroke, and excessive sweating. Additionally, the intense physical activity from military training caused some mild muscle spasms. The symptoms aren’t too severe, but her physical condition isn’t ideal, so these symptoms are making her very uncomfortable. I’ve given her a few bottles of IV fluids to ease her discomfort. If she still feels bad afterward, we might need to send her to the hospital for further examination.”
“Thank you.”
“Please stay with her for now. I’ll go prescribe some medicine for her.”
Sheng Yize nodded, and the doctor turned to leave.
“Senior Sheng, you’re finally here!” Lin Luoluo said, about to speak more when her phone rang.
She hurriedly stepped outside to take the call, apologizing when she returned: “Uh… Senior Sheng, since Sui Sui isn’t in critical condition, I have to head back to military training. You stay here with her, and I’ll come back to check on her after training.”
Sheng Yize nodded and said, “Go ahead.”
He paused, then added, “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.” Lin Luoluo smiled and turned to leave.
Sheng Yize didn’t leave. Instead, he pulled up a chair and sat beside her.
He gently took her hand in his, his thumb lightly tracing her soft hand.
His heart remained unsettled, despite what the doctor had said.
He stared intently at her, feeling a surge of guilt that spread like vines inside him.
If only…
If only he had taken better care of her after the concussion last time, perhaps she wouldn’t be suffering so much now?
A sharp pain shot through his chest. Sheng Yize furrowed his brows, glancing at the IV drip, before reaching out to touch her cheek.
It was still a bit warm.
“Sang Sui…” he whispered, watching her closed eyes. “When will you stop having a fever?”
Her face, flushed from the fever, looked so fragile. When his cool hand touched her cheek, she relaxed slightly, her brows unfurling in comfort.
She instinctively rubbed her face against his hand, letting out a contented sigh, “Feels… so good…”
His body stiffened, and he softly called, “Sang Sui?”
Perhaps the fever had made her delirious, as she could hear his voice clearly.
Sang Sui slowly opened her eyes. The familiar face in front of her seemed to blend with the images in her memory.
She blinked, staring at his face for a few seconds, her mind slow to catch up. Finally, she softly asked, “Sheng… Sheng Yize?”
Sheng Yize gently rubbed her cheek and nodded: “Do you feel very uncomfortable?”
Sang Sui blinked, then answered weakly, “It hurts…”
“I’ll go get the doctor.”
Sheng Yize made a move to stand, but she grabbed his hand.
The man sat back down, meeting her confused and dazed eyes. “If you’re uncomfortable, you need to speak up.”
The young girl snuggled closer to his palm, a satisfied smile curling her lips, “When you’re with me, I’m not uncomfortable.”
“…”
Sheng Yize laughed despite himself. “Am I some kind of medicine?”
“When I was sick before, you always stayed with me…” As she spoke, something clicked in her mind.
Sang Sui blinked, her long lashes fluttering, and she stared at his face for a few seconds, gradually becoming more alert.
She suddenly pulled her hand back, looking at him with timid eyes. “Why… why are you here?”
Sheng Yize glanced at the hand she had pulled away, then met her round eyes, his voice thick with a hint of irritation.
“Used me and threw me away?”
“…”
Sang Sui pouted, muttering, “Not really.”
You told me to keep my distance from you, but didn’t let me eat with you…
Sang Sui felt a little wronged, silently turning her back to him.
Sheng Yize watched her actions, her body curled in a pitiful way, and sighed helplessly.
This girl always gets a bit feisty when she’s sick. She doesn’t want to talk, and when she does, she curls up like a hedgehog, unwilling to communicate when things don’t go her way.
He looked at her back and asked helplessly, “What’s wrong?”
“Just go. I’m fine.”
“…”
After the IV drip was finished, the doctor replaced it with a new one. Her symptoms had slightly improved.
Sang Sui stared at the drip, her lips curling down. “Don’t worry, I didn’t faint because of the concussion. It was just heatstroke and some discomfort. It has nothing to do with you.”
“…”
Sheng Yize was both angry and helpless.
He couldn’t figure out what was going on in her head.
At that moment, the doctor’s voice rang out.
“Excuse me, your sister’s prescription is ready. Please come and pick it up.”
Sheng Yize stared at her back for a while before standing up. “Sui Sui, stay here. I’ll go get the medicine.”
As he walked away, Sang Sui silently turned around.
The chair beside her was empty. He had left.
“Take this three times a day, three pills each time, and this one twice a day, one bottle each time…” The doctor gave instructions as she packed the medicine into a bag. She nodded toward the water dispenser. “Please give her the medicine with some water. The cups are over there.”
Sheng Yize nodded, “Thank you.”
The doctor handed him the bag, and as he turned to get the water, she called after him.
“Excuse me?”
The doctor hesitated for a moment, lowering her voice. “I don’t have any sanitary pads here. Could you please go buy some for her? And also, a change of clothes. Her pants…” She paused, then added, “They got dirty.”
Sheng Yize froze, a flush creeping up his ears.
He nodded. “I’ll take care of it.”
Sheng Yize turned, grabbed a cup of warm water, and took the medicine over to her.
“Wake up, time for your medicine.” Sheng Yize placed the water on the side table, propped her up with a pillow, and helped her sit up.
For the medicine part, she was quite obedient, sitting up without complaint and taking whatever medicine he handed her.
After she finished and drank some water, he helped her lie back down, tucking her in.
His cool hand gently brushed her forehead, and Sang Sui’s body trembled slightly. Her feverish, slightly flushed eyes locked onto his.
The fever had clearly subsided by a large margin.
Sheng Yize’s gaze fell on her eyes, and he gently pinched her cheek, a smile tugging at his lips.
“Rest, Sui Sui. I’ll go buy you something.”
He turned and left the infirmary.
Once outside, Sheng Yize took out his phone and dialed Chen Yi’s number.
The call was quickly picked up.
“Hey, bro. I need to ask you something.”
