The two brothers stared at each other for a long time, as if engaged in a silent duel, the subtle and solemn atmosphere gradually spreading in the spacious living room, making it hard to breathe.
The guards stationed at the door couldn’t help but move a few steps further away.
Suddenly, Mo Qi chuckled, reclining back on the sofa and crossing his legs, saying to Mo Xin, “There’s no difference, it’s all the same.”
However, Mo Xin didn’t feel relieved because of this.
If he had only suspected before, now he was quite certain that his brother already knew about Liang Qiuchi’s situation.
But Mo Qi seemed to have no intention of questioning him.
Why? Was he in favor of his action of harboring and helping Liang Qiuchi? Or did he have other plans, and now he was just biding his time?
In the blink of an eye, countless possibilities flashed through Mo Xin’s mind.
“You don’t need to think too much,” Mo Qi spoke, pulling back his attention, “just handle tomorrow’s press conference well. Dad’s approval rating will definitely go up, and then, no matter how much Reinis talks, it’ll all be in vain.”
Mo Xin had never paid much attention to the situation of the presidential election, but he thought Mo Qi’s conclusion was too optimistic and confident.
Mo Qi glanced at the time, “Alright, I have a video conference to attend later. You go upstairs and rest for now, pick any room you like.”
Mo Xin nodded, standing up to head towards the stairs, but suddenly stopped in his tracks and called out to Mo Qi, “Ge.”
“What is it?”
“Do you have anything else to say?”
Mo Qi thought for a moment, “Don’t run around before the end of the election. Don’t give Reinis a chance to claim credit.” He smiled at Mo Xin, “As for other matters, we’ll talk about them later.”
With that said, Mo Xin felt it inappropriate to say anything else.
The next morning, just after the two brothers had finished breakfast, Vincent arrived punctually outside in a military off-road vehicle.
“It’s good timing that he’s here to pick you up, saves me the trouble,” Mo Qi said, “we have a meeting in the department this morning, very busy, so I won’t see you off.”
“Alright.” Mo Xin changed his shoes and then strode onto the car, heading to the press conference venue with Vincent.
On the way, passing through the central square of the city, he saw many people gathering together, holding banners. It seemed like they were about to organize a protest demonstration.
As for the specific reasons for the demonstration, Mo Xin didn’t care.
Upon arriving at the venue, the media were mostly already in place, all reporters who had obtained entry qualifications after layers of screening. The process was also pre-arranged. As Mo Qi had said, all Mo Xin needed to do was to read through the press release and answer a few irrelevant questions.
However, at the forefront of the media group, that guy Godwin Reinis and his three or four henchmen conspicuously occupied the most prominent positions.
Seeing them preparing to take the stage, Godwin even raised two fingers to poke his own eyes, arrogantly indicating that he was watching their every move.
Vincent gritted his teeth, “Can’t shake off this annoying guy.”
Mo Xin changed into his military uniform and adjusted his collar in front of the mirror. He casually glanced at the stage and then averted his gaze as if nothing was happening.
He extended his hand, and Vincent immediately placed a neatly pressed military cap into his palm.
“Do your own thing and don’t make mistakes,” Mo Xin said as he put on the cap, then turned and walked onto the stage amidst a flurry of camera flashes.
Everything went smoothly according to the procedure, until the question-and-answer session. Suddenly, sitting in the audience, Godwin raised his hand with a sinister smile on his ugly face.
Sharp-eyed reporters recognized him and passed the microphone for questioning based on their sharp instincts.
But before Godwin could speak, Vincent, also dressed in military uniform, suddenly ran up to the stage and whispered something in Mo Xin’s ear.
Although Mo Xin covered the microphone in time, a few words still slipped out and were accurately captured by Godwin sitting in the front row.
Liang Qiuchi!
Godwin’s eyes lit up, staring at Mo Xin as if he were a hungry wolf locking onto its prey.
Mo Xin pressed the microphone button, gestured to another spokesperson from the negotiating team, and then briskly left the platform with Vincent, heading backstage.
The venue erupted into a commotion, with reporters whispering to each other, speculating on what sudden situation could have prompted General Mo to leave the scene.
Meanwhile, Godwin led his few subordinates, quickly catching up. Seeing Mo Xin and Vincent leaving in a car, he hastily jumped into his own vehicle. “Follow them closely!”
“Yes!” The two cars started one after the other, accelerating onto the roadway.
“General, they’re catching up,” Vincent glanced at the rearview mirror but couldn’t help but be drawn to Mo Xin sitting in the back seat.
At this moment, Mo Xin had taken off his military uniform, wearing only a black shirt and changing his pants.
Even in such a disheveled state, his cold and restrained demeanor remained undisturbed.
But the more composed he appeared, the easier it was for people to imagine him being emotionally stirred.
Mo Xin suddenly raised his eyelids and said in a cold tone, “Just drive properly.” Then he unemotionally zipped up his pants.
Vincent quickly withdrew his gaze, gripping the steering wheel tightly with a flushed face, focusing on driving.
The three vehicles maintained a relatively stable distance as they passed through two blocks. When they reached the central square of the city, the crowd surged, and the speed of the cars slowed down significantly.
“What’s going on?” Godwin in the rear car was puzzled. “Why are there so many people?”
“It seems like the merchants are gathering to protest against the curfew.”
“Don’t these people care about the press conference?” Seeing Mo Xin’s car gradually engulfed by the pedestrians coming and going, Godwin impatiently leaned out of the car and honked a few times. Two of his subordinates rolled down the window and waved at the pedestrians blocking the road. “Move aside! Police are on official duty!”
As soon as they heard the police were coming, the demonstrators immediately surrounded them, angrily demanding an explanation.
“Idiots!” Godwin angrily slapped the person next to him and said to the driver, “Speed up and go around them!”
“Move! Hurry up!”
The driver hesitated, “What if someone gets hurt?”
“What are you afraid of? If something happens, I’ll take the blame. Just drive faster!” Godwin was so anxious that he felt like his pants were on fire. “If we lose sight of Mo Xin, I’ll make sure you regret it!”
Unable to afford to offend the Reinis family, the driver gritted his teeth and stepped on the gas.
Amidst a chorus of screams, Godwin’s two cars finally passed through the central square. After speeding down half a street, they finally caught a glimpse of Mo Xin’s tail lights in the distance.
Godwin breathed a sigh of relief and patted the headrest of the driver’s seat. “Don’t lose them again. If we manage to catch Liang Qiuchi, I’ll ensure your future success.”
“Thank you, Captain!” The men responded in unison, focusing intently on the military SUV a hundred meters ahead.
The cars drove through the bustling city area and headed towards the vast forest in the southern outskirts of San Lorenzo. Eventually, they stopped at a forest boundary marker.
But after the cars were turned off, no one got out or got in.
After observing for nearly half an hour, Godwin couldn’t sit still any longer. He decided to get out of the car and see what Mo Xin and Vincent were up to.
“Captain, do we need to call for backup?” one subordinate nervously asked for Godwin’s opinion.
“There are only two of them, and you are six. Why would we need backup?”
Although he said so, Godwin couldn’t help but swallow a few times nervously. After checking his pistol and bullets, he opened the car door, then quickly and quietly approached the military SUV.
The six men approached from different directions, surrounding the car.
Godwin knocked on the car window.
The glass slowly rolled down, revealing Vincent’s perfectly feigned surprise from the driver’s seat. “Captain Reinis? What are you doing here?”
Godwin couldn’t be bothered with small talk. He glanced past Vincent’s seat and his eyes widened instantly. “Where’s General Mo?!”
On the spacious rear seat, apart from neatly folded military uniforms and caps, there was nothing else.
How was this possible? How could such a big person disappear into thin air!
“What kind of trick are you playing? Where is he?” Godwin picked up his gun and aimed it at Vincent’s forehead.
Vincent raised his hands, his expression calm and composed. “General Mo is busy with official duties. If Captain Reinis, you have any other business, I can convey it on your behalf.”
