A Military Marriage: Five Years Apart—The Delicate Beauty Joins the Army with Her Child Chapter 11

Chapter 11: Quick or Efficient? A Matter of Perspective

In the era she came from, going out in shorts was completely normal.

But in the present time, shorts like these were considered nothing more than undergarments, and one had to wear long pants over them when stepping outside.

The shorts barely reached mid-thigh, revealing her long, slender legs. Li Xia’s skin was naturally fair, and since her legs were rarely exposed to the sun, they appeared even more delicate and pale. In an instant, they completely captured Gu Weicheng’s attention.

“Ahem.” Gu Weicheng cleared his throat lightly, awkwardly shifting his gaze away. “Put on some pants before coming to eat.”

Li Xia honestly didn’t think it was a big deal. Back in her time, she had always worn shorts of this length out in public.

However, when she noticed the faint redness creeping up Gu Weicheng’s ears, she decided not to say anything. Silently, she put on a pair of long pants over her shorts.

“This morning, I ran into our Brigade Commander at the cafeteria, so I went ahead and submitted the Family Housing Application Form. The house has been assigned.”

“But I have a training this afternoon, so I won’t be able to tidy up the place until tomorrow. Starting tomorrow, I’ll have a few days off. I’ll clean up the house as soon as possible, and then we can head into the city together to buy whatever we need.”

Once Li Xia had put on the long pants, Gu Weicheng finally regained his composure and dared to look at her again.

“Really? That was so fast!” The moment Li Xia heard that the family housing had been approved, she was genuinely delighted.

She had stayed in the guesthouse long enough and couldn’t wait to move into a place of her own.

However, Gu Weicheng’s expression turned a little strange, as if he had some reservations about her choice of words. Li Xia quickly realized her mistake and covered her mouth with her hand.

Wait… don’t men dislike being called fast…?

“Uh, that’s not what I meant. I meant you’re very efficient at handling things,” Li Xia hurriedly clarified.

At the mention of the word ‘efficient,’ Gu Weicheng was immediately reminded of something from that morning.

The Second Battalion Commander had secretly approached him, asking how Gu Weicheng had managed to get Li Xia pregnant so quickly—what was his secret to being so ‘efficient’? The man had been married for almost a year, and his wife still hadn’t conceived.

“Regimental Commander, we’re both men here, so I won’t beat around the bush. If my wife doesn’t get pregnant soon, my mother’s going to worry herself sick. I wouldn’t have come to you if I had any other choice. Just teach me, will you? If I can get my wife pregnant sooner, I’ll finally be able to put my mind at ease.”

Gu Weicheng: “……”

Ask him? How was he supposed to know?

Of course, this wasn’t something he could discuss with Li Xia, so he could only keep it to himself and quietly move on.

Meanwhile, An An had chosen the steamed bun over the porridge. Now, with both hands wrapped around a bun nearly the size of his face, he was silently nibbling away.

The filling was cabbage and tofu, and An An was clearly enjoying it.

Seeing this, Li Xia couldn’t help but marvel—wow, the differences between the North and the South weren’t just in dietary habits; even the size of steamed buns was completely different. This wasn’t just a steamed bun—it was practically the father of all steamed buns!

She picked up one of these “steamed bun dads” and took a bite. Just finishing one was enough to make her almost full.

Gu Weicheng then took out two boiled eggs. He carefully crushed the shells with his fingers before peeling them away, revealing the smooth, plump eggs inside. He placed one in front of Li Xia and one in front of An An.

“Eat the egg—it’s good for nutrition.”

“Why don’t you have one?” Li Xia asked, but she already knew the answer.

Eggs were hard to come by in times like these. Gu Weicheng had probably used some connections to get them, prioritizing her and the child instead of himself.

Li Xia peeled her egg, then handed the yolk to Gu Weicheng while eating only the white. “I don’t like egg yolk. You can have it.”

Before transmigrating, Li Xia truly didn’t like eating egg yolks. She found them dry and a little too eggy in taste. But after coming to this world, she had long since learned to be practical—being able to eat an egg at all was already a luxury. Whether it was egg white or yolk, she wasn’t in a position to be picky!

She only said that to make sure Gu Weicheng ate some as well.

Gu Weicheng glanced at her but didn’t criticize her supposed pickiness. Instead, he silently ate the egg yolk and said, “You need to eat more. You’re too thin.”

Li Xia didn’t think she was thin at all. In her opinion, her body was just right—balanced, strong, and full of energy.

After breakfast, Gu Weicheng had to leave.

Before he left, Li Xia said, “Since this will be our family’s home, An An and I should help clean it up too. When you go tomorrow, take us with you.”

A home should be something a family builds together.

An An, standing beside his mother, chimed in enthusiastically, “Mommy is right! An An wants to go too! An An will help!”

Gu Weicheng looked deeply at Li Xia, then nodded in agreement.

He hadn’t known her well before, but now he could tell that Li Xia had changed a lot.

Back when he proposed marriage, it had been purely out of responsibility. Even though he knew he had been set up, the fact remained—he had touched an innocent girl, ruined her reputation. As a man, he had to take responsibility.

But at that time, Li Xia had cried and made a scene. Later, she had given him five whole years of cold indifference.

Just when he thought this marriage was beyond saving, she suddenly reappeared.

She was no longer the girl who threw tantrums. The coldness in her eyes had faded, and at times, he could even sense a trace of warmth in her gaze.

That alone made Gu Weicheng feel relieved. It changed the way he saw their marriage.

Although Gu Weicheng had agreed to let Li Xia and An An help clean up the house, the place had been unoccupied for several months. The military wife who had lived there before wasn’t particularly tidy, leaving the house in a filthy, chaotic state.

Gu Weicheng planned to do an initial cleaning himself. That way, when Li Xia and An An came tomorrow, there would be less work for them.

On his way to the military family housing compound, Hu Songlin suddenly ran up to him. “Old Gu, where are you headed?”

Gu Weicheng took one look at Hu Songlin and raised an eyebrow. They had both just finished intensive training not long ago, yet Hu Songlin had already washed up and tidied himself up so well that he didn’t look like someone who had just come out of a grueling session.

“The family housing has been assigned, so I’m going over to clean up. And you—why are you so put together today? Going on a blind date?”

Having worked with Hu Songlin for so long, Gu Weicheng knew him well.

Whenever Hu Songlin cleaned himself up like this, it usually meant he was about to go on another matchmaking meeting. Unfortunately, his attempts had all ended in failure.

It wasn’t that he lacked good qualities—on the contrary, his standards were simply too high. As the Political Commissar put it, he was too picky.

The organization had arranged several introductions for him, but none of them met his expectations. In the end, both the Political Commissar and the women’s affairs officer gave up, deciding not to concern themselves with his personal life anymore.

It had been over half a year since he last went on a matchmaking meeting—was he at it again?

Hu Songlin waved his hand dismissively. “No way. Commissar Liao and Director Fang have completely washed their hands of my personal matters. No one’s arranging blind dates for me anymore.”

“I was just thinking—yesterday, we brought Regimental Commander Su’s younger sister to the base. She had terrible motion sickness on the way here, and I don’t know how she’s doing now. I figured, should we go check on her?”
