Director Tian mentioned several jobs, but most of them were either in the logistics department, which required heavy lifting, or in other positions unsuitable for military spouses, as they were accustomed to farm work back home.
However, there was a relatively easy job: being a film projectionist. But this role required traveling to different villages to screen movies, and sometimes, if it got too late, returning the same day wouldn’t be possible, meaning an overnight stay in the village.
Gu Weicheng wasn’t keen on letting Li Xia become a projectionist. First, because she was a woman, and safety was a concern. Second, because he simply couldn’t bear to be apart from her.
Ever since she relocated with him, Gu Weicheng had felt an immense sense of fulfillment every time he came home to see her and An An.
If there was ever a day when Li Xia wasn’t home, Gu Weicheng would truly feel unsettled.
Working at the broadcasting station was the best option and the most suitable job for Li Xia.
Gu Weicheng remembered that Li Xia had always loved reading. Even after relocating with him, she spent her days engrossed in books.
“Writing articles?” Li Xia’s eyes lit up.
She had almost forgotten to mention it—writing was her forte. After all, she had majored in Chinese language and literature in university.
Although finding a job after graduation had been somewhat frustrating, her studies had greatly refined her writing skills.
She loved reading and writing. In her free time, she wrote articles and submitted them to newspapers or magazines, gradually building a small reputation.
Just a couple of days ago, she had taken advantage of some spare time to write an article, planning to submit it to a magazine. Since she hadn’t secured a job yet, earning some income from manuscript fees wouldn’t be a bad idea.
Li Xia walked over to the desk, pulled a sheet of paper from the drawer, and handed it to Gu Weicheng. “Take a look?”
Gu Weicheng took it and began reading.
After a long moment, he looked up at Li Xia, his eyes filled with admiration and delight. “You wrote this?”
Li Xia lifted her chin slightly, nodding with a touch of pride. “Hmm, I had some free time these past couple of days, so I wrote it. I was planning to submit it for publication.”
“This is really well written. The ideas expressed here are exceptional.” Gu Weicheng hadn’t expected his wife to be so talented, capable of writing an article that could provoke such deep thought.
He had always known that Li Xia enjoyed reading, but he had assumed she mostly read for entertainment.
However, after reading this article, he realized that Li Xia was a person with remarkable depth of thought.
Through the protagonist’s experiences, the article vividly depicted the current social landscape, provoking deep reflection. And in the final passage, it even instilled a sense of hope for the future.
Since arriving in this era, Li Xia had taken the time to understand the country’s circumstances, which inspired her to write this piece.
She herself was quite satisfied with it, but seeing Gu Weicheng’s reaction, she chuckled. “It’s not as great as you’re making it out to be.”
“No, it really is.” Gu Weicheng said firmly. “I’ll speak with the organization department tomorrow—you are more than qualified for a position in the broadcasting station’s publicity department.”
Honestly, if his wife joined the broadcasting station’s publicity team, they would be the real winners.
If the army’s propaganda department didn’t require a university degree, he believed she could have qualified for it!
…
On the third day, Li Xia got up early to get ready.
Instead of wearing the dress she had bought at the supply store, she opted for a white blouse paired with green military-style trousers and the currently popular rubber-soled shoes.
This outfit looked more formal and gave off a neat, energetic appearance. While dresses were nice, they weren’t the best choice for a ‘job interview’.
Gu Weicheng returned home after fetching breakfast, and the family gathered around to eat.
“Do you want me to go with you later?”
“Aren’t you heading to the army base this morning? Don’t you have training?” Li Xia asked.
Gu Weicheng said, “Old Hu is there. It won’t be a problem if I go a little later.”
Li Xia chuckled and teased, “What’s this? Are you worried about me? Don’t be. It’s just an interview, nothing to stress over.”
After graduating from university, she had already gone through several job interviews. She was well-practiced and wouldn’t get stage fright.
Gu Weicheng’s thoughts had been exposed, but he refused to admit it. “It’s not that. I just thought you might not be familiar with the way there. As long as you’re fine, that’s what matters.”
“I saw the broadcasting station when I went to the market with Sister-in-law Tao. I know where it is, so don’t worry.” Li Xia flashed him a bright smile.
“But still, Commander Gu’s concern for his wife deserves recognition—an honorary verbal commendation.”
Gu Weicheng met her gaze, and the tips of his ears turned slightly red.
He suddenly remembered that night when she had kissed his cheek and called him baby.
What he hadn’t told Li Xia was that later that night, he had dreamt about her. In the dream, the two of them…
…
The next morning, as soon as he woke up, he had to change his pants right away.
Now, Gu Weicheng felt his throat go dry and scratchy. The steamed bun in his hand suddenly seemed impossible to swallow, so he quickly took a sip of water.
Beside him, An An chimed in, “Mommy, and An An too! An An wants to be praised too!”
Li Xia couldn’t help but smile helplessly. Last time, when she had praised An An, Gu Weicheng had gotten jealous. This time, after she praised Gu Weicheng, An An was the one feeling left out.
“Alright, alright,” Master of Balance Li Xia smiled at An An as well. “When Mommy goes to the broadcasting station, An An will stay at Sister-in-law Tao’s house and be a good boy. Mommy will praise An An too.”
An An nodded enthusiastically. “Mm-hmm!”
After finishing breakfast, Li Xia entrusted An An to Sister-in-law Tao.
Gu Weicheng asked again, “Are you sure you don’t want me to go with you?”
Li Xia waved him off. “No need, really. You should go now.”
Seeing her firm stance, Gu Weicheng finally dropped the matter and said no more.
As Li Xia watched his departing figure, she thought to herself—Gu Weicheng really was both a devoted father and a doting boyfriend.
The broadcasting station was located in the town center, with a sign outside that read “Linghe Town Broadcasting Station.”
Li Xia stepped inside and saw a round-faced woman sitting inside. She approached and asked, “Hello, is your publicity department still hiring? I’m a military spouse, and I’m here to apply for the position.”
The woman looked up at her, and a flash of surprise crossed her eyes.
This woman in front of her was truly stunning—she looked like she had stepped right out of a magazine.
However, she still replied, “You’re here for the position? We already hired someone yesterday, also a military spouse. She’ll be starting tomorrow. Our publicity department was only hiring one person, so we don’t need anyone else now.”
“Already hired?” Li Xia found it strange.
When Gu Weicheng had come home yesterday, he had told her to come today, which meant that at that time, the broadcasting station was still looking for someone. How had they suddenly filled the position overnight?
Did someone apply late last night?
