Chapter 13: Getting into Trouble
The whispers in the village quickly reached the ears of the old couple in the Song family, and they were a little unhappy about it.
It wasn’t that they were defending Song Shengsheng, but that their own family was also being embarrassed!
Song Shengsheng was pretty, even in a plain cotton dress, she looked alluring. She was naturally beautiful, no doubt about it.
She walked home from the village head, and she was looked at a lot along the way.
When Song Mother saw her come back, she couldn’t help but doubt the truth of the rumors.
She also knew that her daughter was restless. Seeing her daughter come back empty-handed, she felt a pang of anger in her heart: “Why didn’t Captain Fu come back with you?”
As she spoke, Song Mother twisted Song Shengsheng’s arm: “Are you having a fight with him again?”
There was a hint of blame in her voice.
If she had known she was so troublesome! She should have let her younger daughter try her luck with Captain Fu! She was sure now that her own daughter would be eating and drinking well in the compound.
Song Mother’s grip was not light, and Song Shengsheng winced in pain.
Song Shengsheng frowned, with a hint of resentment: “No. He’s gone on a mission.”
Song Mother was dubious, mainly because every time she angered Fu Cheng, she would vaguely say he was on a mission.
After so many times, it was no wonder she didn’t believe her.
Song Mother’s eyes rolled, and another idea came to her mind: “Didn’t he take care of you before he left?”
Missions could last for an uncertain amount of time.
Not to mention anything else, he should have left her some food coupons and money.
Song Shengsheng knew what her mother was thinking when she heard her words, and she said: “He didn’t pay any attention to me.”
Song Shengsheng blinked her eyes and lied without hesitation: “Mom, you know he’s so cold, like a stone heart. I really can’t warm him up.”
Song Mother thought about it, and it was true.
Even though Fu Cheng was an officer in the Ningcheng army, his temperament was different from others. It was said that he was also a leader in the provincial committee compound.
He had the confidence to be arrogant.
Her daughter was only beautiful, she wasn’t likable at all.
Their child was already five years old, and their relationship seemed to be lukewarm.
Ultimately, it was because Song Shengsheng wasn’t capable enough.
Song Mother didn’t get what she wanted, but she wasn’t in a hurry.
She pulled Song Shengsheng into the house. Zhao Xiaoning was in the house, and when she saw her, she obediently called out: “Cousin.”
Song Mother took the opportunity to talk to her about this important matter: “You’re back just in time, your cousin needs your help.”
Song Shengsheng had already guessed what it was.
“Your cousin wants to find a job in the city. She doesn’t have a city residence permit, but a place to live would be fine.”
“You can spare a room for her to live in. She found a temporary worker job in the textile factory, and she can earn twenty yuan a month.”
“She’s your cousin, you have to help with this little thing.”
In Song Mother’s eyes, this was a sure thing.
Not to mention anything else, no matter how much her daughter made trouble in front of Fu Cheng, she wouldn’t do it at home.
She didn’t have a mind of her own, and she could be coaxed into doing anything with a few words.
Zhao Xiaoning thought the same way.
In her previous life, this stupid cousin of hers had eagerly taken her in, cleaned up the guest room and gave it to her.
If it wasn’t for this cousin of hers, she wouldn’t have been able to get close to those high-ranking, privileged people in the capital.
Song Shengsheng looked at the two of them with their ulterior motives, she quickly squeezed out tears, and hesitated to speak: “It’s not that I don’t want to help, it’s just that Fu Cheng is not happy with me right now.”
She looked pitiful with red eyes, “I have no say in anything at home, and I came back to my mother’s today…”
She whimpered, her nose red: “It’s just that we don’t even have enough rice and noodles at home, he controls all the money and tickets, so I wanted to come back and ask Mom for some food.”
“I can go hungry, but the child can’t.”
“We have two mouths to feed, a big one and a small one, we’re starving.”
Song Mother: …
Damn it, she came back to mooch off them!
Song Mother valued the food in her home more than her life, she changed her expression and refused: “You know what our situation is like, all the food we have comes from your father and me working in the fields.”
Song Mother didn’t even try to persuade her to divorce Fu Cheng anymore, instead, she broke her own habit and advised her: “When Fu Cheng comes back, you should coax him.”
“He’s full of energy and has nowhere to spend it, you just need to stick to him, and you can coax him with a few words.”
Song Shengsheng was still in a pitiful state.
She wiped away the tears she squeezed out, her soft white face looked harmless, and she said: “Okay, Mom.”
She sniffed, her voice soft: “I’ll take a few steamed buns back later.”
Song Mother didn’t even want to give her a few steamed buns.
But she was afraid that she would ask for more, so she quickly boiled water and steamed a pot of buns for her to take away and leave now.
She came back at just the right time.
It was the day Song Peiyuan came back from high school in the county.
Song Peiyuan was her younger brother, it was hard to say if they were close or not.
Because their parents favored boys over girls, Song Shengsheng had resented Song Peiyuan, who had been favored since childhood. But when he was younger, Song Peiyuan was like a piece of sticky plaster, he was particularly clingy to her.
Song Shengsheng couldn’t understand why Song Peiyuan had been so clingy to her before.
She had never given him a good face, and she always had a stinky face towards him.
In the past two years, he had become more restrained and didn’t get close to her as much.
Song Shengsheng still remembered what this book said, Song Peiyuan would become a very famous forensic doctor in the future.
In the book, it was he who examined her body in the end.
The man in a white coat was like a cold moon hanging in the branches. He removed his mask and gloves, his face expressionless, and declared: “It was suicide.”
When he saw her die.
His face didn’t show any emotion.
But his eyes turned red in circles, as if he was very sad.
His tall and straight back, as if burdened by invisible pain, he gripped the back of the chair tightly, several times he was so pained that he couldn’t straighten up.
When he lifted his face, it was already covered in wet tears.
His voice trembled, calling her sister over and over again.
Song Shengsheng felt complicated, she felt that she and Song Peiyuan didn’t have any brother-sister relationship at all.
At this moment, Song Peiyuan saw his sister who hadn’t returned in a long time, he paused for a moment, then returned to normal, distant and cold: “Song Shengsheng, why are you back?”
He didn’t even call her sister.
As if he didn’t like her very much, and wanted to drive her away.
Song Shengsheng snorted, seriously doubting the authenticity of the book she dreamed of!
She pretended not to hear Song Peiyuan’s words.
Song Peiyuan frowned, his tone not very good: “Did you cause trouble again?”
