Chapter 31: Ask Him
The dream abruptly ended after she firmly refused to go back with Fu Cheng.
Song Shengsheng woke up and sat on the bed, lost in thought.
She felt a mixture of emotions, a sense of the subtle and strange.
It seemed that this period drama was not kind to her, the cannon fodder female lead, portraying her as brainless. The few plot points were all about her being blind and her subsequent regrets.
Every time Song Shengsheng had a dream, her body felt very tired.
Her limbs were weak, and for a while, she just wanted to lie in bed and not move.
Last night, she was completely consumed by Fu Cheng, that man, and had another thrilling dream.
She was not only physically exhausted, but also mentally exhausted.
It seemed she had no choice but to live a good life with Fu Cheng.
Song Shengsheng began to think about why she was so angry, so wronged, and so sad yesterday.
Perhaps.
She still liked Fu Cheng a little.
If she didn’t like him, if she just treated him as the male lead in the novel, trying to please him, as a game to conquer, she wouldn’t be so heartbroken.
The more Song Shengsheng thought about it, the more she felt it made sense.
She silently adjusted her attitude, it was fine if she didn’t like Fu Cheng.
It would be just like before, when she insisted on marrying him, coveting his looks, his height, his family in the capital, and his connections in the army!
It would be fine.
Song Shengsheng quickly comforted herself.
She gathered herself, got out of bed, and saw that it was still early, so she didn’t rush.
When she went out, she met Auntie Liu, who beamed at her and stuffed a few cucumbers from her own garden into her arms. “Shengsheng, the clothes you gave Jianhua yesterday were really nice. He wore them to the recruitment office for his interview, and the leaders all praised him for looking neat.”
Joining the army wasn’t that easy.
To get a spot, you had to fight tooth and nail.
The organization’s review was also very strict, requiring good looks, a clean family history for three generations, and no ideological problems to be eligible.
Not to mention physical fitness.
Auntie Liu’s son wasn’t good at studying, and she didn’t want him to go to a remote and poor place. Being able to join the army would not only bring honor, but also a bright future.
Song Shengsheng took the cucumbers and smiled. “Jianhua is handsome anyway, he’d look good in anything.”
Whether it was true or not, Auntie Liu was happy to hear it.
She continued, “I heard you found a job at the supply and marketing cooperative?”
The news had spread throughout the military dependents’ compound yesterday, but it was always mentioned with a sour tone.
On the one hand, they didn’t believe it.
On the other hand, they were maliciously speculating that she was just unhappy at home, otherwise why would she need to find a job?
Wouldn’t it be comfortable to stay home and take care of the children?
“Yes, they were short-staffed, so I went for an interview and unexpectedly got the job.”
She said it so humbly.
Who didn’t know that the supply and marketing cooperative was never short of staff? This job wasn’t something you could get just by wanting it.
The people there were very picky!
You needed connections.
But Song Shengsheng was too striking. She stood at the counter, and even if you weren’t buying anything, you couldn’t help but look at her, taking a second glance.
If Song Shengsheng wasn’t so beautiful, with such a captivating figure.
Auntie Liu thought that with Captain Fu’s indifferent and arrogant nature, he wouldn’t have willingly married her just because someone caught them together in a room.
“They didn’t believe it, but I knew you could do it.”
“Thank you, Auntie Liu.”
The people from the Ding family next door heard the commotion and couldn’t help but stick their necks out to eavesdrop. They couldn’t help but interject, “Shengsheng, I’m afraid you won’t be able to handle that kind of work, will you?”
Song Shengsheng glanced at the window and smiled, not backing down. “The work at the supply and marketing cooperative is considered hard work? There are no good jobs in the world.”
The words choked the Ding family, like a fishbone stuck in their throats, leaving them with a bad taste!
Why did all the good things in the world go to Song Shengsheng?
She slammed the window shut, with a bang, as if it wasn’t loud enough.
After closing the door and window, she gritted her teeth and said, “I’ll see how long she can last at the supply and marketing cooperative with her lazy and gluttonous nature. I bet she’ll be fired in two or three days!”
Then she turned to her niece, grabbed her hand, and said, “Fangfang, your uncle finally got you a job in the canteen’s logistics, you have to seize this opportunity.”
Fu Cheng went to the canteen in the compound every day to get his meals. Over time, maybe sparks would fly.
She thought she knew men.
A flower in the pot was never as good as a wildflower. Who wouldn’t be tempted?
After all, she had married Ding Yingzhang the same way. She was just a little nurse back then, but now she was the battalion commander’s wife.
Ning Fangfang thought of Captain Fu and her face flushed. She said, “Auntie, I know what to do.”
Ever since she met Captain Fu that day, she had her own ideas.
Captain Fu’s wife was very beautiful, but she had also heard that she was not at all virtuous, and they often argued.
Men liked gentle and obedient women who could understand them.
Wouldn’t they get tired of arguing all the time? If there was someone to comfort them with sweet words, even the hardest steel could be softened by the warmth.
“If this works out, you’ll be the battalion commander’s wife.”
“You can also live in the military dependents’ compound, maybe even the provincial committee compound in the future!”
Everyone knew that as long as Captain Fu’s family in the capital was not purged, he would definitely achieve great things in the future, and he would definitely not just be a battalion commander.
Ning Fangfang was already dreaming of this kind of decent life. It shouldn’t be Song Shengsheng’s, it should be hers.
Song Shengsheng was used to the Ding family’s cold words.
At noon, when she went to the canteen to get her food, she heard a lot of snide remarks.
“Shengsheng, you can make pastries too?”
“The pastry chef at the supply and marketing cooperative is a strict old man, don’t complain after two or three days.”
“Yeah, I don’t know what you’re doing, you’re just embarrassing Captain Fu.”
“You don’t have an education, and you’re not quick on your feet, you can’t even do housework, it’s enough to take care of your husband and children at home.”
The sarcastic remarks came one after another.
They couldn’t wait for Song Shengsheng to quit her job!
They were all envious of Song Shengsheng’s success.
Song Shengsheng pretended to be oblivious. “Twenty-something yuan a month, plus food rations, how can I miss out on such a good opportunity?”
Seeing her say this, everyone rolled their eyes, feeling a little uncomfortable.
They couldn’t say anything else, just waiting for her to be fired in a few days.
Song Shengsheng got her lunch today and didn’t rush back to the compound. Instead, she took her full lunchbox to the army.
The army also had a canteen.
It just so happened that Fu Cheng hadn’t eaten yet. His subordinates saw his sister-in-law from afar, and they all rushed to look at her.
Song Shengsheng didn’t come to beg for forgiveness.
She wanted to act virtuous and gain a good reputation.
That way, even if Fu Cheng divorced her later, as in the book, and left her in Ningcheng.
She could also act like a victim and get some sympathy.
Making Fu Cheng a heartless man in the eyes of others.
Fu Cheng was about to go home. He usually didn’t even eat lunch, he would go home to wash her lunchbox first.
Then he would go back to the canteen to eat.
Under the scorching sun, Fu Cheng saw that slender figure and thought he was mistaken.
He walked over, saw clearly that it was her.
The man frowned, grabbed her wrist and pulled her into the shade of a tree. “It’s so hot, why did you come here?”
Song Shengsheng smiled sweetly. “The canteen made your favorite dishes today, so I came to bring you some food.”
Fu Cheng looked down at her, his heart seemed to tremble, a warm feeling.
But he quickly calmed down and asked her, “Tell me, what do you need me to help you with this time?”
