A Summer Night’s Affair
A Summer Night’s Affair Chapter 28

Chapter 28: “So, do you care if I date or not?”

That night, it started to rain.

The patter continued until morning without stopping.

The wind brought the rain along with a coolness, and Beicheng welcomed autumn overnight.

The rain lasted until noon before finally stopping.

Many leaves were knocked down in Fuyuan, littering the paths.

He Jiayu stepped on the wet leaves to find Lu Jin.

There had been a gathering last night, but Lu Jin didn’t go because Mr. Lu wanted him to go home.

He Jiayu came to find Lu Jin to hang out and take a stroll around Fuyuan.

He hadn’t been there for a while.

Seeing Lu Jin looking drowsy, He Jiayu asked, “A Jin, you didn’t just wake up, did you?”

Lu Jin replied with a “Mm,” “I took a nap.”

He Jiayu: “Did you get scolded by the old man when you came back last night?”

Lu Jin: “Got lectured a bit.”

“How come you’ve been staying at Fuyuan for so long this time?” He Jiayu asked.

Lu Jin had stayed at Fuyuan before, usually just for a day or two, but this time it had been a week.

Lu Jin: “I wanted to stay, so I did.”

He Jiayu didn’t think much of it.

He was soon distracted by a pomegranate tree.

There were several pomegranate trees in Fuyuan. Since last month, the pomegranates had been ripening one after another.

Most of the ripe pomegranates had been picked, and only a few remained on the tree, all up high.

He Jiayu spent quite a bit of effort before finally getting one down.

Although the pomegranate wasn’t very big, it was quite sweet when he peeled it.

While peeling and eating the pomegranate, He Jiayu talked about last night’s events.

The most special thing that happened was that a friend they often played with brought his younger sister along.

Lu Jin: “He has a sister? A biological one?”

He Jiayu: “Yeah, a biological one. She insisted on coming out to play with him.”

“His sister was really well-behaved, speaking softly and looking like a doll, making people feel soft-hearted just looking at her.”

“Are you interested?” Lu Jin’s tone carried a hint of playful mischief.

He Jiayu: “What are you talking about? She’s in sixth grade!”

“I just suddenly feel a bit envious that he has a sister. If I had such a sister, I’d definitely take her out to play every day and give her anything she wanted.”

He Jiayu sighed, “What a shame, my parents didn’t have a second child.”

Taking a step onto the bridge, He Jiayu spotted Xu Entang in the pavilion not far away.

On the stone table in the middle of the pavilion lay a few books, and Xu Entang was sitting at the table, holding one.

The water on the ground was half-dried now, and the air was fresh.

She was focused, slightly lowering her head, the daylight highlighting her fair skin, making her look clear and bright.

Next to the pavilion stood a osmanthus tree, a branch reaching in, appearing to gently tease her cheek with the autumn breeze.

He Jiayu: “I almost forgot, your family has a younger sister now too.”

“I envy you, not knowing the blessings you have, getting a cute and pretty little sister for free.”

Lu Jin’s gaze also landed there, looking for a few seconds before casually saying, “This little one at home looks well-behaved, but she’s actually in her rebellious phase.”

He had seen her being quite well-behaved and quiet a few times, like a little tail. But sometimes she seemed a bit cold, how could she be in a rebellious phase?

He Jiayu was filled with big question marks in his mind.

While the two were talking, Xu Entang in the pavilion closed the book in her hand and picked up another one.

As she flipped open the book, something that looked like either a piece of paper or a letter floated down like a fallen leaf…

On the ground.

In the autumn colors of Fuyuan, the pink was eye-catching.

He Jiayu clicked his tongue, “Looks like not only is she in a rebellious phase, she might even be in a puppy love situation.”

When Xu Entang saw the pink envelope drifting down, she was momentarily stunned, unsure if it had fallen from her own book.

How could there be something else tucked in her book?

She bent down to pick up the envelope and took a look.

It was pink, resembling… a love letter.

She examined both sides and found no writing.

She suspected it might have been given to the wrong person.

After hesitating, Xu Entang opened the envelope.

The letter began with: 【Hello, Xu Entang.】

It really was for her.

In high school during her past life, Xu Entang had received several love letters.

But at that time, her mind was focused on Lu Jin. If she knew who sent it, she would return it; if she couldn’t find out who sent it, she would just leave it without reading it.

Receiving a love letter after so many years made Xu Entang feel her cheeks heat up slightly as she carefully read through it.

The last paragraph touched her a bit.

【I’m sorry for the boldness in writing this, and I hope it doesn’t cause you any trouble.

I’m really glad to have met you this semester.

I hope we can work hard together during these monotonous days.】

There was no signature at the end.

He Jiayu: “A love letter?”

Xu Entang looked up.

Suddenly, the love letter in her hand was snatched away.

She reached for it.

Due to the height difference, Lu Jin simply raised his hand, and she ended up grabbing nothing.

Xu Entang frowned.

Lu Jin casually glanced at the paper in his hand, “Puppy love?”

“It has nothing to do with you,” Xu Entang tried to snatch it back again.

Lu Jin: “Do Mr. and Mrs. Lu know?”

After failing to retrieve the love letter twice, Xu Entang felt somewhat mocked.

Without thinking, she retorted, “Why can you date but I can’t?”

He Jiayu was so shocked that he nearly dropped the pomegranate in his hand, not daring to breathe.

He hadn’t expected the seemingly well-behaved Xu Entang to speak so boldly to Lu Jin.

Who dared to talk to Lu Jin like that, let alone a girl?

Even Zhao Man, who had a temper, only acted out when Lu Jin was in a good mood, knowing when to stop; she had never been this bold.

She was really daring.

No wonder they said she was in a rebellious phase.

Rebellion could be quite troublesome.

Lu Jin raised his brows slightly and asked Xu Entang back, “When did I start dating?”

Xu Entang was momentarily taken aback, surprised.

His words implied that he wasn’t dating anyone at the moment.

He should be with Meng Tian by now.

In her past life, he had already been dating Meng Tian for over half a month by this time.

Xu Entang replied, “You might not be dating now, but you’ve dated before.”

Lu Jin chuckled, “So you care whether I’m dating or not?”

Xu Entang’s tone turned cold, “What’s there to care about?”

His words seemed to trigger her automatic defense mechanism.

Only after speaking did she realize her reaction was a bit excessive.

“…”

She pressed her lips together and silently averted her gaze.

He Jiayu snapped back to reality from his shock and smiled to ease the tension, saying to Xu Entang, “A Jin is just concerned about you, afraid you might be tricked by a boy’s sweet words.”

“Receiving a love letter is nothing; even if Mr. Lu and Mrs. Lu knew, I wouldn’t care.”

Xu Entang looked at Lu Jin again, wanting to retrieve the love letter.

Lu Jin glanced at the content of the letter and didn’t raise his hand any higher, allowing her to take the letter back.

Xu Entang folded the letter along the creases again.

He Jiayu said, “It’s perfectly normal for a pretty girl to receive a love letter.”

“If you like a boy, just tell us; we can help you keep an eye on him.”

“I will.”

Xu Entang placed the love letter back into the envelope, picked up the few books on the table, and walked out of the pavilion.

Watching her leave, He Jiayu popped a few pomegranate seeds into his mouth.

“A Jin, I misunderstood. It seems you’re quite good to your little sister. Otherwise, she wouldn’t dare to talk to you like that.”

Just now, he really thought Lu Jin would blow up.

Having a rebellious little sister was indeed a source of worry.

Lu Jin seemed lost in thought. A few seconds later, he lightly smirked, “She’s always talked to me like this.”
