Chapter 21: Is she already protecting her husband?
But, Xia Nanxi could hear her husband being scolded from the second floor.
“Too much! Why don’t you just pour the whole bottle of oil on it?”
“Flip it over, it’s burnt, can’t you see?”
“Don’t call me brother, you’re my brother, I beg you, can you add two pieces of charcoal? The fire is about to go out!”
…
Xia Nanxi finally couldn’t take it anymore and went downstairs.
“Third Brother, are you practicing your voice here? Why are you constantly yelling at my husband? Even though you are technically his brother-in-law, he is actually five years older than you, can’t you show him some respect?”
Xia Jingyang was also feeling wronged, “I don’t respect him? I’m already calling him brother, I don’t know what’s wrong with him, a guy from the countryside, he doesn’t know anything, just like a wealthy and pampered young master who doesn’t know anything about the real world.”
He lowered his voice, “Well, you see his whole demeanor, he is definitely a thousand times more noble than that Wang Jianzhou.”
Xia Nanxi took the oil brush from Zhan Chengyan, “Go rest, I’ll do it.”
Zhan Chengyan didn’t want to cause any more trouble, so he simply stopped and sat on a stone bench nearby.
He spread his legs, lowered his head slightly, and lit a cigarette with a cool and casual demeanor.
Amidst the smoke, his handsome face had a hint of coldness, a hint of playfulness, a hint of nonchalance, and a hint of captivatingly charming evil.
Xia Jingyang couldn’t help but mutter to Xia Nanxi, “You ungrateful little thing, you’re already protecting your husband like this, you’re completely infatuated with his looks, you’ve forgotten all about your gratitude!”
Xia Nanxi smiled at him, “You know, looks are justice.”
Actually, it wasn’t that she was protecting Zhan Chengyan, but she didn’t want him to have any opinions about her family.
To be honest, it was fine for her siblings to argue, but Zhan Chengyan was an “outsider”, if they were too harsh, he might get upset.
But she didn’t know that Zhan Chengyan not only wasn’t angry, but he was actually in a good mood.
Since he was a child, he had only been surrounded by people who flattered him, he had never had anyone talk to him like this before, it made him feel close to them.
Soon, Xia Jingshen came back, he bought some marinated meat and four cups of milk tea.
One for Xu Xiufen, one for Xia Jingyang, one for Xia Nanxi, and the last one for Zhan Chengyan.
Zhan Chengyan had never had this kind of drink before, “I don’t drink this.”
“Drink!” Xia Jingshen directly put it in his hand, “It doesn’t matter how old you are, as long as you are my sister’s husband, you are our brother-in-law, you are our younger brother!”
Zhan Chengyan was really quite surprised, his own third brother had never treated him like a younger brother, but now, at his mother-in-law’s house, he was being treated like a child by his three brothers-in-law.
“Okay, I’ll drink it.”
Then Xia Nanxi and Zhan Chengyan sat on the stone bench and drank milk tea, while Xia’s parents and the third brother were busy preparing dinner.
The sun was setting, painting the sky with a fiery red sunset.
The autumn breeze blew gently, cool and comfortable.
Wisps of smoke rose from the chimneys, and the aroma of meat wafted far away.
The neighbors who came and went couldn’t help but praise them.
“The Xia family got a good son-in-law, look how happy Old Xia is, he even roasted a whole sheep.”
Xia Changyuan and his wife were known for their kindness in this neighborhood, they would always give a piece of lamb or two skewers of grilled meat to anyone who passed by.
Amidst the laughter and chatter, dinner at the Xia family was ready.
Chicken in a clay pot, steamed fish, braised pork, sweet and sour pork ribs, spicy beef, braised duck, braised pork knuckle, roast whole lamb, garlic fragrant lettuce, stir-fried cauliflower, shrimp and tofu, braised eggplant, corn and egg soup, steamed buns, scallion oil pancakes, various skewers.
A total of 16 dishes.
Xia Jingyang couldn’t help but sigh, “Look at this, the son-in-law’s treatment is really good, when did Mom ever make such a big table of dishes for us?”
