Through the glass window, Song Yi saw Chi Yuan lying on the hospital bed, barely clinging to life. His once plump figure had wasted away to skin and bones, and his once fair, rosy complexion had darkened, as if he had just returned from hard labor in Africa. Tubes were attached to him all over, leaving only his wide, restless eyes darting around.
The attending physician, holding a clipboard, spoke kindly. “He was found under a bridge, likely involved in some dispute with shady individuals, leading to a physical altercation. The initial diagnosis shows multiple soft tissue injuries and minor fractures.”
“When can he be discharged?” Song Yi frowned. In this miserable state, would Chi Yuan finally agree to divorce Song Jie?
“It depends on how he recovers. Normally, he should be back on his feet in about two weeks.”
“When will he be able to communicate? I have some papers he needs to sign.”
“Hmm… about a week or so.”
Song Yi nodded slightly. As long as Chi Yuan was alive, the rest could be dealt with in time.
Now that Chi Yuan was in his hands, Song Yi was confident he could handle him.
As he was about to leave, the attending physician stopped him, looking at him with a complicated expression. Pointing to his head, he said, “Mr. Song, the patient has some issues here. He’s been muttering nonsense, saying ‘sorry, sorry,’ over and over, and claiming he’ll never do it again…”
“Is it serious?” Song Yi’s heart skipped a beat.
The doctor shook his head. “Not too serious. The patient is just experiencing some memory confusion. It will take some time for him to recover.”
Song Yi exhaled in relief and thanked the doctor. He called Song Jie to update her on Chi Yuan’s condition but downplayed it, saying Chi Yuan had only suffered minor injuries and needed rest, reassuring her that everything would be taken care of.
Having seen Chi Yuan for himself, Song Yi felt much more at ease. Finally getting Song Jie to divorce this scumbag and rid her of him had been his long-awaited goal.
Growing up, the family’s financial situation wasn’t great. With two kids in school, expenses added up, and Song Yi and Song Jie had little to no pocket money. While their peers were buying accessories and hanging out in internet cafés, the two of them were working part-time jobs to help support the household.
Despite these tough times, Song Jie would often save up to buy her older brother things—sometimes a pair of sneakers, sometimes an extra book for school. Though they weren’t expensive, Song Yi always kept her kindness in mind, and whenever he could help her, he made sure to give it his all.
After all, in this world, Song Jie had no one else to rely on but him.
As Song Yi left the hospital, something didn’t sit right with him. Chi Yuan was a sharp, cunning man—smart enough to trick Song Jie into marrying him. For someone like him to end up beaten like this while hiding from loan sharks… it just didn’t seem like something Chi Yuan would let happen to himself.
Though it seemed strange, Song Yi didn’t dwell on it much—he chalked it up to Chi Yuan finally getting what he deserved.
He contacted a lawyer to draft the divorce papers and sent them to Song Jie. As he did, a reminder popped up on his phone, and he remembered that Shen Li’s birthday was in a few days. Shen Li had sent an invitation earlier, planning a party at a hotel in the capital.
