Chapter 110: Pass a Message for Me (2/2)
Wang Tieshan sat on the steps next to the entrance, anxiously smoking. “I just can’t understand why his attitude was so bad last time…” Shen Kuo frowned deeply, still pondering their last visit. They speculated wildly, one moment thinking Manager Zhang was an upright man who didn’t want gifts, and the next, wondering if they hadn’t offered enough.
Little did they know, Manager Zhang had just scored with his secretary that day. They were about to get intimate in bed when they were interrupted. Who could stand such an interruption?
“Should we wait for him or go in and ask?” Wang Tieshan stubbed out his cigarette, glancing at the company’s main gate; it wasn’t even 8:30 yet.
“Let’s wait…” Shen Kuo checked his watch, “Giving gifts isn’t something you do openly. Let’s just sit here and chat, keep an eye out. His neighbor said he often isn’t home on Saturdays and Sundays, so he’s bound to come to the office.”
After speaking, Old Shen took out Manager Zhang’s business card to look at. The card was peculiar; where others’ cards had names and positions, Manager Zhang’s just had “Manager Zhang” written on it. “Weird…” Old Shen muttered to himself, “What’s this guy’s real name? What’s he hiding, so secretive…”
They waited and hoped, but by noon, Manager Zhang hadn’t shown up. The sun was scorching, leaving them drenched in sweat. Wang Tieshan wanted to go inside and ask around, but Old Shen still held him back, not because he doubted Wang Tieshan’s ability to speak, but fearing that if Manager Zhang was actually there and said something unpleasant, it would completely dash their hopes.
“Want a boxed lunch?” Wang Tieshan, feeling hungry, bought two boxed lunches, and they squatted by the roadside, resembling workers waiting for a job. Old Shen barely ate a few bites, turning to look at Wang Tieshan, wishing they could share a drink and talk heart to heart. But then thought better of it. It seemed too demeaning.
Lately, the calls from his rival had been more frequent, even suggesting a meeting with Ding Xiang. Old Shen had heard from old comrades that the rival had recently divorced. So, Old Shen was especially worried that he might be trying to rekindle an old flame with Ding Xiang, and if she was taken away, he would lose all face.
“I’m not hungry anymore.” After just a few bites, Old Shen felt even worse. The office director’s job wasn’t lucrative, with an annual income of just over twenty thousand, not even matching what my old rival made in a month. His rival was now a well-known businessman, involved in the electronics technology industry, which Old Shen didn’t understand. However, he knew it was lucrative, especially as the computer industry was booming. Zhao Qingfeng had even been clamoring to buy a computer, which cost thousands or even tens of thousands, surely making a significant profit.
As he brooded, Wang Tieshan suddenly saw a well-dressed middle-aged woman and a young woman getting out of a Santana, mentioning “Manager Zhang.” Wang Tieshan couldn’t wait any longer, having waited all morning. When would it end? He blinked, thought for a moment, and without waiting for Old Shen’s approval, he stood up and chased after them, grabbing the middle-aged woman’s arm and cheerfully asking, “Sister, are you also here to see Manager Zhang? Could you please pass a message for me when you see him?”
“What should I call you?”
“Just call me Old Wang, Wang Tieshan.”
“Hello, I’m Liu Li.”
