Chapter 23: Torrential Rain (2/2)
“I’ll stay at a motel. See you tomorrow.”
After parting ways on the street, Zhao Qingfeng randomly picked a small motel to stay in.
The era was not strict about identification requirements.
Faced with the motel owner’s suggestive attitude about finding a young lady for him, Zhao Qingfeng declined, claiming he was just a high school student. After a quick wash, he hurriedly crashed onto the bed.
………………………….
The next morning.
As soon as the tech city opened, Zhao Qingfeng joined the crowd rushing through the gates.
Since he didn’t have an employee card, by the time he reached the third floor, Sister Lan and Li Kun were already busy.
After greeting them, Zhao Qingfeng reminded Li Kun not to forget to send some virus-free good websites to the wealthy youth from last night.
Li Kun initially pretended to be serious.
But Zhao Qingfeng’s penetrating gaze made him chuckle and agree to do so.
Zhao Qingfeng then inquired if Li Kun had mentioned last night’s event to anyone.
Li Kun shook his head firmly, “Brother, I keep my mouth shut. We’ve suffered a big loss in our family, I remember the lesson.”
That was good.
It’s important not to be too clever for one’s good.
Zhao Qingfeng casually learned that Li Kun’s father used to do foreign trade business, but suffered a severe setback due to a business secret revealed during a dinner by a cooperative friend. The business, which should have grown, ended up disastrously defeated.
According to Li Kun, if not for that person’s indiscretion, he might have been a second-generation rich kid by now.
“No wonder…” Zhao Qingfeng nodded gently.
Experience teaches more effectively than words.
It seemed that Li Kun had learned his lesson well, hence his adherence to the teachings.
He might be a useful person.
Zhao Qingfeng was planning something he couldn’t handle personally and needed someone trustworthy.
After a brief thought, a perfect strategy came to his mind.
But there was no rush to discuss it.
He needed to observe for a while longer.
After greeting Sister Lan, Zhao Qingfeng, as usual, started distributing flyers downstairs but his mind was already back in the county town.
“Boss, how much for a MicClip? Our neighbor upstairs wants one for personal use.”
At the MP3 counter on the first floor, Zhao Qingfeng deliberately placed the flyers on the table, acting like he was familiar with the tech city.
Because vendors generally don’t overcharge familiar faces.
“1300.”
The boss glanced up and quickly offered a fair price.
Zhao Qingfeng thanked him, treasuring the device in his arms. He had little interest in distributing flyers and only forced himself to do so, waiting eagerly to finish work and return to the county town.
At noon.
It started to drizzle outside.
That morning, he only attracted two small accessory sales, earning a modest commission.
Taking advantage of the lunch break, Zhao Qingfeng downloaded many songs.
The internet speed in 2001 was painfully slow, measured in KBs.
Fortunately, the MP3 only had 128MB of memory, filling up in less than two hours.
“Who’s having a birthday? This gift seems too extravagant. Ah, if a man was this nice to me, I’d marry him right away.”
Sister Lan laughed teasingly while turning on the radio.
“A neigh…neighbor’s sister. I promised her a birthday gift, must deliver it tonight.”
Zhao Qingfeng blushed and stammered.
Sister Lan covered her mouth, giggling at the innocent romance of young people, planning to tease him more.
Li Kun also joined in the joking.
But just then.
Thunder suddenly roared from the sky outside, causing the radio to crackle. The broadcaster’s voice came through intermittently.
“Urgent broadcast, according to the latest meteorological report, due to cold air, this afternoon our province will experience heavy torrential rain. Airports and passenger transport are gradually shutting down. Citizens are advised to make travel arrangements early.”
