Chapter 23
“What did you say?” Qin Feng looked at Taohua. “Your voice was too soft just now, I didn’t hear it.”
Taohua frowned, feeling embarrassed to repeat herself, and simply stomped her foot and said, “It’s nothing, let’s just hurry.”
Hearing this, Qin Feng couldn’t help but chuckle.
Actually, he had heard it earlier, but he didn’t expect his little wife to be so jealous.
The Qin family lived at the foot of the mountain, at the innermost part of the village.
When the young couple returned home, they had to walk from the entrance to the end of the village.
When they left the village, the two baskets were filled evenly, and anyone who wasn’t paying close attention would have thought they were empty baskets.
But when they returned, both baskets were full.
Two large live fish, which had just returned from the town, were still alive, jumping and flopping;
The two chickens also didn’t stay still, flapping their wings, trying to fly away.
Everyone in the village who saw them couldn’t help but envy them. Anyone who saw them would come over to greet the young couple, and also take a peek at what was inside those two large baskets.
“Suddenly, the whole village was talking. They said Chen family’s Taohua is a lucky woman!” Sun Xiaolan laughed, telling Taohua all the gossip she had heard in the village.
At this moment, Taohua was sitting next to Sun Xiaolan, the two of them were sewing the soles of their shoes.
Taohua rubbed her needle against her scalp and asked, “Did everyone really say that? They used to say I was indecent, but now they’re all praising me?”
“Yes, actually, even before you came back, people in the village were already talking about you. They said they saw you selling fur in the street, and at that time, the whole street was crowded with people wanting to sell furs, but the fur merchant only bought from one family.
They even said something about a trick where you had to touch beans. There was a handful of green beans with one red bean hidden inside. Whoever touched the red bean, the fur merchant would buy their furs. Out of all the people, only you, Taohua, touched the red bean.
Tell me, is this true?”
“Mm!” Taohua nodded, “It’s true, but it’s not as exaggerated as the villagers say. Only about twenty people were touching the beans, not the whole street crowded with people. Qin Dage and I, along with one other person, were the last ones to touch the beans, and it just happened that I touched the red bean. I was really lucky, but it’s not that I am lucky for my husband, it’s actually Qin Dage who is lucky for his wife.”
“Oh,” Sun Xiaolan immediately got excited when she heard this, “So it seems you two really did that last night, right?”
Taohua nodded. She wasn’t shy about discussing it with Sun Xiaolan anymore: “Yes, we did.”
Sun Xiaolan nodded, but after thinking for a moment, she said, “Maybe it was just a coincidence? Why don’t you two take a break for the next couple of days and see if your luck continues? You can’t say it’s not luck just because it happened once or twice, right?”
“Is that so? But…” Taohua paused and said, “If Qin Dage wants it, should I refuse? That wouldn’t be right, would it?”
“Tsk, tsk, tsk, you girl!” Sun Xiaolan gave Taohua a mischievous smile. “Have you started enjoying it? You don’t want to stop even for a day, huh?”
“What are you talking about!” Taohua rolled her eyes. “Just focus on your own shoes. Last night, I didn’t want to be so proactive, I just wanted to see if I’d have good luck in the town today.”
“Come on, you’re not a little girl anymore, why be shy with me? Even if you admit you like him, I wouldn’t laugh at you.”
“Go, go, go, always so ridiculous,” Taohua said, reaching over to tickle Sun Xiaolan.
Sun Xiaolan laughed uncontrollably.
While the two were joking, a knock on the door was heard from outside.
The two sisters immediately stopped, both listening carefully to the sounds from outside.
Taohua listened closely for a moment, then frowned, “I swear that sounds like Chen Dashan’s voice. What does he want with me?”
“Probably heard from the villagers that you bought a lot of things today, so he’s here to try his luck,” Sun Xiaolan replied.
“Shameless!” Taohua couldn’t help but roll her eyes towards the door. “I’m not answering him. Let him shout. If he yells his throat out, I’m not going out.”
“Fine, let him keep calling. We’ll pretend you’re not home and keep doing our work.”
After returning from the town, Qin Feng had gone up the mountain. So, Taohua had been alone at home. But after hearing the village gossip, Sun Xiaolan came over with her needle and thread to chat with Taohua.
At this moment, both of them had decided to ignore the noise outside and wait for Chen Dashan to leave on his own.
However, Chen Dashan was thick-skinned and showed no signs of leaving.
After a brief silence, Taohua thought he had left, but suddenly he excitedly shouted:
“Yo, where did these two chickens come from? These must be wild chickens from the mountains, right? But they don’t really look like wild ones. They look like they’ve been raised by someone. A rooster and a hen—perfect! I’ll take them home. The rooster for braised chicken, the hen for soup!”
Taohua couldn’t sit still when she heard this. “My chickens!”
Sun Xiaolan frowned. “Do you think he’s trying to trick you? Everyone in the village knows you bought two live chickens from the town, one male and one female. It’s not surprising that Chen Dashan knows.”
“But what if it’s not a trick? What if he’s actually trying to steal my chickens? I won’t let him get away with it! I didn’t want to deal with him, but he’s just too infuriating. If I go out and see him taking my chickens, I won’t let him off!”
