Chapter 102: Mr. Fu
For the first time in his life, Fu Huaizhou doubted his family doctor’s diagnosis.
Ruan Li didn’t think much of it, since she had been feeling unusually sleepy lately very similar to when she was pregnant with little Jing.
“I took precautions every time,” Fu Huaizhou said, sitting on the sofa while reading the test results from the doctor. It clearly stated that she was already more than a month pregnant. Considering how frequent their intimate moments were, they couldn’t pinpoint the exact time it happened.
Ruan Li had initially planned to stay quiet, but seeing his puzzled expression, she found it amusing and explained in a small voice, “Actually, on our wedding night… I noticed the next day that the condom had broken.”
She hadn’t given it much thought at the time, attributing it to Fu Huaizhou’s intensity. Although she got pregnant with little Jing after just one try, Ruan Li assumed that since it was the second time, it wouldn’t be that easy again.
As it turned out, she was indeed very fertile, though it was unclear whether to credit her health or Fu Huaizhou’s.
Fu Huaizhou’s expression darkened immediately, which made Ruan Li a bit uneasy. It had been a long time since she’d seen him look like this.
“It’s probably fine…” Ruan Li mumbled defensively, holding the equally curious little Jing tightly.
Fu Huaizhou, exasperated, ignored both of them and stepped outside to make a phone call, looking quite serious.
“Mommy, why did Daddy’s face turn dark?” little Jing asked innocently, holding Lucky the cat and gently stroking its back. He had never seen his father look like this.
Ruan Li, feeling guilty, whispered, “It’s nothing, he’ll be fine soon.”
She knew Fu Huaizhou well no matter how angry he was, it wouldn’t last long. The worst would be a mild scolding, especially now that she was pregnant and he couldn’t do anything physical about it.
Just as she expected, Fu Huaizhou soon came back inside, looked at the two expectant faces on the sofa, and said, “I’ve arranged for traditional Chinese medicine contraceptives for you. From now on, you won’t skip drinking it.”
Ruan Li deflated. Though there were Western contraceptives, Fu Huaizhou had always said they had side effects, and she disliked Chinese medicine. They had settled on using protection every time, but now that option was completely off the table.
After instructing the maids to take little Jing to the Shi residence next door, Fu Huaizhou grabbed Ruan Li’s coat.
“Where are we going?” Ruan Li asked, still confused.
“The hospital,” he replied.
little Jing, hugging Ruan Li’s waist, protested, “I want to go too, with you guys.”
“No,” Fu Huaizhou said firmly. “We have a lot to do, and no time to look after you.”
“I don’t need looking after!” little Jing puffed up his chest, trying to prove himself.
Ruan Li couldn’t back him up this time. “You should go play with your uncle. He’s gathered a lot of airplane models these days. If you don’t go, he’ll have no one to play with.”
Knowing that little Jing would likely talk about wanting a little sister at the hospital, she didn’t want to risk it. She felt that Fu Huaizhou, in his current mood, might ban him from the master bedroom for a month.
Little Jing, who always obeyed his mother, reluctantly agreed.
“Why are we going to the hospital?” Ruan Li asked, sitting in the car, still a bit confused. Usually, they had doctors come to the house.
The man, whose expression had been tense the entire time, frowned slightly and explained, “We need to do some tests. If the condom broke, the baby might… not be healthy.”
Fu Huaizhou didn’t want to curse his own child, but given the circumstances, it was best to make sure.
“I didn’t know…” Ruan Li’s mind went blank. When she was pregnant with little Jing, their lifestyle was healthy especially with Fu Huaizhou’s guidance so she hadn’t worried about any health issues then. Little Jing had been a robust, rarely sick child.
Seeing the tears welling up in her eyes, Fu Huaizhou sighed and gently pulled her into his arms, comforting her.
“That’s why we’re doing the tests, to be sure. Don’t worry,” he said, trying to ease her anxiety.
On the way to the hospital, Ruan Li was restless and couldn’t hold back her tears several times. “If only I hadn’t taken a chance and just taken the medicine then…” she said.
Better to have avoided all this stress than to bring a child into the world only to suffer.
“Don’t cry. The baby might be as lively as little Jing,” Fu Huaizhou reassured her, more concerned about the impact of stress on her pregnancy. He felt guilty too if he had been more careful that night, this could have been avoided.
They completed a full set of tests at the hospital, and while waiting for the results, Fu Huaizhou let Ruan Li rest.
When the doctor finally came out with the report, confirming that the baby seemed fine, Ruan Li breathed a huge sigh of relief.
“But you’ll need to do several more follow-up tests just to be safe,” the doctor cautioned.
Finally, their moods lightened a bit. After returning to the mansion, Fu Huaizhou set aside work and started planning a comprehensive pregnancy routine for Ruan Li much more detailed than when she was pregnant with little Jing.
When little Jing returned that evening and saw that his parents were no longer tense, he ran to Ruan Li, placing his chubby little hand gently on her stomach.
“Mommy, am I going to have a little sister?” he asked.
Ruan Li laughed, “How do you know it’s a sister?”
Sitting beside her, Fu Huaizhou, now in a much better mood, smiled and said, “I think it is too.” Though he hadn’t initially planned on another child, now that they were expecting, he hoped for a daughter. One little Jing was clingy enough a daughter would provide a different kind of joy.
“I just know,” little Jing said, pressing his chubby cheek against Ruan Li’s stomach. What he didn’t say was that he had been praying every night. He didn’t want to be the youngest anymore and wanted someone to call him “big brother.” If it were a sister, it would be more exciting a mini version of his mom.
“I’ll take good care of her,” little Jing promised earnestly, just like his mom took care of him.
Ruan Li chuckled, remembering how everyone, even Shi Xun, had hoped little Jing would be a girl back then. “Don’t be disappointed if it’s not a girl.”
Of course, little Jing had already won over his two uncles with his charm.
Due to the special nature of this pregnancy, Ruan Li had to undergo regular tests, and avoiding the baby’s gender was practically impossible.
At a little over four months pregnant, both families learned the baby’s gender. Seeing Fu Huaizhou’s rare and joyful smile, Ruan Li couldn’t help but tease him.
“Mr. Fu, is it everything you hoped for this time?”
