After Breaking Off the Engagement, I Was Pampered By My Younger Uncle Chapter 87

Chapter 87: Falling from the Building

Recently, the floor where Ruan Li and Shi Xun have been staying has been unusually quiet. One reason is that Shi Xun’s surgery is just around the corner, and everyone’s mood has been a bit heavy.

However, the person involved doesn’t seem to think so.

Shi Xun still casually visits Ruan Li’s room every day, under the pretext of checking if she’s properly taking care of his niece.

Shi Xun is firmly convinced that Ruan Li’s baby is a girl. After thinking about it, Ruan Li realized it might be because Shi Xun has no experience in raising a sister, so he’s particularly excited about the possibility of a girl in her belly, whom he can then take care of.

Ruan Li didn’t refuse him at the time, silently thinking that if Shi Xun’s surgery is successful, it wouldn’t be a problem to let him raise the child.

“Why hasn’t Third Brother shown up recently?” Shi Xun attributed the quietness in the hallway to Fu Huaizhou not stirring things up for a while. He used to come up with excuses to visit, sometimes even coming at night, only to be locked out by Ruan Li. Lately, there’s been no sign of him.

“Do you want to see him that badly?” Ruan Li questioned him, feeling that Shi Xun was nothing but a big traitor, with a mouth like a sieve, always spilling her secrets to Fu Huaizhou.

Shi Xun gave her a lazy side glance. “I’m just asking, why are you so worked up? Don’t tell me you’re jealous?”

Once again, he earned a middle finger from Ruan Li.

After some thought, Ruan Li realized it was true ever since that encounter on the balcony, she had seen Fu Huaizhou much less often.

“Coward,” she muttered softly.

“Miss Ruan, you have a delivery. Would you like it brought upstairs?” One of the housekeepers called to her from the hallway.

Ruan Li had recently bought a lot of prenatal education books, which she intended to study. It was likely the materials had arrived.

“I’ll go down and get it myself,” Ruan Li responded.

Otherwise, she’d go stir crazy staying in the room all the time.

As she walked out into the hallway, she unexpectedly bumped into someone she felt she hadn’t seen in a while.

Fu Huaizhou noticed her now even more pronounced belly, and because of her slim figure, her protruding belly looked even more concerning.

“What are you doing out here?” he asked. The weather had been bad recently, so she had mostly stayed indoors.

“Getting something,” Ruan Li answered calmly. “What are you doing here?”

“To see you,” Fu Huaizhou admitted openly.

After the last encounter, he had spent a long time thinking about what he could do to win her back. He had initially thought about sending her Lucky, so she wouldn’t feel so lonely. However, considering the long flight and the potential risks of being around a fluffy pet during pregnancy, he had hesitated and given up on the idea.

If Ruan Li remained unhappy, he decided he would just keep apologizing until she forgave him.

“Oh.” Ruan Li brushed past him.

As she was about to head downstairs, she looked down at her feet, not noticing a nurse approaching with a tray of medication.

Caught off guard, the nurse collided directly with Ruan Li.

“Ugh” Ruan Li didn’t have time to dodge. The nurse, taller and more solidly built, caused Ruan Li to stumble toward the stairway’s low railing.

The railing was low enough that she could easily fall down to the floor below.

Ruan Li instinctively closed her eyes, hugging her belly tightly.

“Ruan Li!” Fu Huaizhou’s shout echoed as everything else seemed to fall silent, and his eyes filled with panic.

In one swift motion, he lunged forward, catching Ruan Li’s waist and cushioning her fall with his body.

“Don’t be afraid.”

Those were the last words Ruan Li heard before the feeling of weightlessness overwhelmed her.

Shi Mu had just arrived to check on his siblings when he witnessed the horrifying scene. The two of them were falling. While the first-floor height wasn’t too terrifying, Ruan Li was pregnant.

The thud of their landing echoed throughout the entire floor, and Shi Mu, in shock, ran downstairs, calling for a doctor with reddened eyes.

The whole hall descended into chaos.

When Ruan Li opened her eyes, she was already on the ground, feeling weak all over. She immediately looked down at her belly.

Luckily, there was no bleeding between her legs.

As she tried to calm the baby in her belly, she noticed blood on her fingers, her heart leaping into her throat.

She then realized she was still in someone’s arms. She hadn’t felt the full impact of the fall.

“Fu Huaizhou?!” Ruan Li’s gaze landed on the man beside her. His brows were furrowed, and his eyes were closed.

Blood streamed from his forehead, pooling onto the floor, and Ruan Li finally understood where the blood on her hands had come from.

Shi Mu rushed over, grabbing Ruan Li’s shoulders. “Where does it hurt?”

Ruan Li, feeling she had found a lifeline, clung to her brother’s sleeve.

Tears poured down her face as she choked on her words, urgently pointing to the unconscious man beside her.

“Brother, save him, please save him…”

“I will, don’t worry,” Shi Mu reassured her, desperate to keep her from fainting.

Doctors and nurses had already placed Fu Huaizhou on a stretcher, rushing him to the emergency room.

Outside the operating room, Ruan Li leaned against Shi Mu’s shoulder, restless and uneasy. The fall itself was a blur to her; she only remembered someone unhesitatingly cushioning her.

“Ruan Li, you should get checked out, alright?” Shi Mu’s worried eyes softened. Even though someone had cushioned her fall, she had still fallen from upstairs.

“I’ll stay here and watch over him. Don’t worry, Fu Huaizhou will be fine.”

Ruan Li glanced at her belly, feeling some slight pain. Shi Mu’s words reassured her, so she followed the doctor for an examination.

The doctor said there was no major harm, but she would need to rest and avoid any intense activity for a while.

Hurriedly, she returned to the operating room, where Shi Mu was still standing.

“The doctor said he has a mild concussion from the bleeding on his forehead, and some spinal injuries that will require a few days of bed rest. But there’s no immediate danger.”

Only then did Ruan Li breathe a sigh of relief. Seeing Fu Huaizhou unconscious with blood on his head had nearly driven her to despair.

“Brother, I need to see him.”

Shi Mu didn’t object. Witnessing Fu Huaizhou risking his life to protect Ruan Li had also left him deeply shaken.

In the hospital room, Fu Huaizhou lay on the bed, his forehead wrapped in thick bandages, looking lifeless.

Ruan Li sat beside him, gently holding his large hand, her voice quivering with emotion.

“When will he wake up, Brother?” She looked at Shi Mu with desperate eyes. “There’s really no danger, right? Why hasn’t he woken up yet?”

Shi Mu didn’t have an answer; the doctor had only said he’d wake up soon.

As if on cue, Ruan Li felt his hand twitch slightly, and his eyes slowly opened.

“Fu Huaizhou!” Ruan Li called his name urgently.

His gaze gradually focused, seeing her leaning close. She didn’t seem to be badly hurt.

His fingers gently pressed against her cheek as he spoke softly, “Good… you’re safe, that’s all that matters.”
